I’d say this is a copy, and if I had to guess, I’d say it might be a resin copy. The bottom has the texture and appearance of a resin cast. The surface quality on the dragon/scales also shows resin bubbles. It’s not the worst resin cast I’ve seen but it isn’t a very good one either.

I had a careful look at the images on this listing and enlarged them to examine on my computer, and while it’s not impossible that a weird griffin made it out of the factory (as Melody said), it truly does look like the color is on the surface exterior of the glass eye… very much like someone took a red marker or transparent paint to it, then tried to remove it. It’s why there’s a ridge of color closer to the interior of the eye, where it’s harder to wipe off. I personally would consider it damaged and probably worth less than a new one, unless provided with evidence to the contrary.

I know it’s not great news for you all, since buying/selling Windstones is a hobby for most of you. But please do remember that using “friends and family” to pay for goods/items is not only against Paypal’s rules, but against forum rules too, because it offers no protection to the buyer at all (we hate seeing people getting ripped off!!!). It can also get your Paypal account flagged even if no one reports you, as Paypal’s system seems to sometimes auto detect this if someone uses it for goods/items. I’ve had a few artist peers I know get their account banned for this, and in one case I remember, the artist couldn’t even get their money from their Paypal balance back, when it happened. Use care.

Gorgeous work, your blending is just stellar! You might consider an auction-style format instead. 🙂

I am not involved at all but I just wanted to thank you again drag0n, for taking all this on despite the headache it can be to manage all of it, you’ve gone above and beyond to help ddvm’s family, collectors, and honor ddvm’s memory by helping get her pieces into loving homes. I did something similar for the family of someone that passed, on a much, much smaller scale, many years ago now, and that alone was a lot of work. You’ve really been a great person to our community.

It can be helpful to know where you found the image! But, in this case, I did recognize it. It’s a hippocampus sculpture by Melody. I think that she decided to go with the laying down hippocampus instead, as the tail design on this was proving too difficult to cast. More information on her Deviantart page for this sculpture from 2014:

                        https://www.deviantart.com/reptangle/art/Twin-Hippocampus-2-441838375

Here is another version where she describes the trouble, and that it is intended to be a PYO. She mentions that she thinks she will have to create one laying down instead (which we now have as a PYO):

                        https://www.deviantart.com/reptangle/art/Hippocampus-Down-WIP-441840162

Her very first version of it:

                        https://www.deviantart.com/reptangle/art/WIP-Hippocampus-notes-mess-264925539

And of course, the version that she was able to make work and has made it to production as a PYO:

This situation is what ultimately drove me from selling on Etsy some years ago. They required sellers to link a checking account so that they could process payments and fees automatically, while still accepting payments from buyers via Paypal (and credit card). Despite a lot of outcry from sellers like myself that would or could not switch, they never backed off from the decision. I doubt eBay will either, honestly, but no harm in voicing complaints if they are taking comments. It is a really similar situation. As for why some small-time sellers are adverse to these sorts of systems, look no further than the horror stories from some etsy sellers, the most recent one I saw effecting a few artists I know includes a glitch on etsy’s shipping where it was moving a decimal point and overcharging people by thousands of dollars, emptying their personal bank accounts and hitting them with overdraft fees. Etsy took forever to even address it… and some people waited a long time to even get partial refunds. It’s happened at least twice. In 2019: https://www.newsweek.com/etsy-sellers-charged-error-fees-thousands-billing-account-overdraft-1341192 and again this year: https://www.pcmag.com/news/decimal-point-error-etsy-overcharge-shipping-labels-thousands

In addition to blue eyes selling well back in the brick-and-mortar store days, I seem to recall Melody saying that the Windstone crew often just preferred them in many pieces. There is probably a psychological aspect to this too. There was a good Ask Melody (or maybe more than one!) about this years ago, but alas, our forum is no longer an easy thing to search!! Especially topics that were created before the most current forum migration.

Too bad they can’t do a poll here where we can all see it. Don’t know if the software would let them though.

I don’t know if it can be done on this site, but it’s easy and free to set up a survey via Google forms. I use them when I need to do a survey/poll on something. https://www.google.com/forms/about/

I don’t know much about it myself, but making molds and casting resin has become a MUCH more popular artform lately; youtube and other free online tutorials would probably be a great launching point to help her get to the point where she would have more specific questions to ask a mentor. 🙂

I can confirm that I didn’t receive anything from the list above! I only received pieces that I had personally painted, most of which I then gifted and resold.
