That’s so nosy people like you don’t come asking if they are BSMs (Blood Sucking Merchants) going to just re-sell all the pieces at a later date. =P ROFLMAO j/k Helen, I’m really glad you sent me a message! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

LOL I’m glad I am too! You make quite the addition to the forum, and we were all so damned curious!!!

Ah! That’s good to know. It’s hard to find stuff on ebay if you don’t know the terms. Just searching for “horse” is impossible, and so many people don’t put “unpainted” in the description, even if it is!

I know your looking to practice for painting a possibly expensive resin someday – the breyer bodies should serve, I think. The plastic they cast the breyers in isn’t QUITE the same as hollow resins – not as dense, I think – but otherwise it would be pretty much the same experience. You would just have to prep the model – you can strip whatever paint is on it by soaking it in a bucket of bleach for a week or two (works really well) and then sand it to give your paints or pasetls a surface to stick on. Most nice unpainted resins come preped for you, but there are some you still have to sand down, so it would give you practice for that as well. ^_^

Oh my god, this kid will not stop…I have just been reviled with his (or her) accomplishments at beating all three kingdom hearts games…peppered with insulting jibes at me of course. Is there any way I can block this person?? Or report them??

Resin = a material. I know it’s come to mean something else in the model horse world, but resin is what it’s made out of.

I’m not looking for something to collect, just something that’s made out of resin, the same stuff as the “resins” you’re thinking of, so I can practice and find if I like working on it or not. I know perfectly well that this hasn’t got a thing to do with the model horse world. I just wanted to know, because I thought the reason “resins” were so expensive was the cost of casting them, how something made of the same material can be so much cheaper, and if anybody knows of something wrong with this other than that it’s obviously mass-produced.

Ah! Sorry, I misunderstood. No, I think resin is actually a fairly cheap material – it’s pretty much plastic. It’s used to cast a lot of stuff…I think this would be fine to practice on. You can also check ebay for breyer “bodies” – old horses that have been scratched or banged up that people are selling as customizing bait. They can go for pretty cheap sometimes.

๐Ÿ˜ˆ I got flamed on ebay!
It was the weirdest thing!! I’ve got a set of custom my little ponies up right now, customized as characters from the video game Kingdom Hearts 2. (I know there are a good few of you out there who either do or collect CM ponies – for the rest of you, it’s a fairly decent sized hobby involving ripping poor my little ponies apart, tearing their hair out, and redoing them to look like a certain character or to have a certain theme or a portrait on their butt or ANYTHING. People get really creative with these things – you should check them out on ebay sometime.) Anyway, since I’ve had mine listed, I’ve gotten a good handful of really NICE little comments on them, people saying what a cute idea and that I did a good job. Tonight I recieved the following:

“OK………. This has got to be the DUMBEST thing I’ve EVER seen on Ebay. How can there be a My Little Pony Sony or Riku or ANY Kingdom Hearts figure??? First off, Kingdom Hearts is a mix of Disney characters and Square Enix characters. My Little Pony fits NO WHERE into that mix. You are just taking up space in this category from people like me who are looking for OFFICIAL Kingdom Hearts figures and merchandise to bid on. This is retarded. My Little Pony has NO place within the Kingdom Hearts story line. And any TRUE Kingdom Hearts fan will tell you that. If not, then I guess I am the first.”

I about rolled off the couch with mirth. Though I am sorry to have so deeply offended him or her….

Here they are, by the way, in case anyone wants to look at the offending material:

Spark – “resins” in the model horse world, as far as I understand it, refers to a couple of things: 1, the really expensive ones, are the “artist resins” which are like my horse Alexander – they are horses sculpted by artists that usually strive for realism; they are sculpted to be of a certain size (traditional scale, classic scale, minis) and they are generally fairly small editions – usually no more than a couple hundred, and often around 50 or so. Then there are resins produced by the major model horse companies like Breyer. There are a few other companies that do nice resins…
What you have there is pretty much a run of the mill (though very beautiful) unicorn statue. It’s very mass produced and not made by anyone (as far as I know) connected to the model horse world. They’re probably cast in China. And as far as I know, he certainly isn’t meant to be painted on. I’ve had my eye on that one too, though, not to paint but just to have – there’s a store near me that sells them, and I think they are very elegant looking.

Hope my poor attempt to answer your question helped!

It’s so weird…these keep coming up as copyright infringement, but I swear I would never have thought “windstone” if I had seen those on my own. They don’t look anything like one to me! I understand the poses are very similar, if not directly copied, but the rest of the dragon is so different (and ugly!) I just wouldn’t make the connection.

I’ve had a magpie griff on my want-to-do list from the very start, and here he is. He might look better in a different eye color…but hopefully the green doesn’t clash too much. There are a few interference green highlights to bring out his eyes. There’s also a lot of interference blue on his black feathers, particularly on the wings. He was sealed in a satin finish, but his beak and talons are glossed. I like bold black and white patterns – there’s a black and white kingfisher that I’d also like to try, but that one is more complex and a lot scarier! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

The stuff for watercolors is just fine. I’ve used it on all my griffins. Mine is newish, so it’s still very watery – I just apply it rather thickly. Too thin and it’s very difficult to get it all out of the eye socket. If you do it more thickly, it tends to hang on to itself and comes out all together when you grab it with a toothpick.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no stuff specifically for acrylics…
