My friend showed me some AMAZING looking pictures of foxes today and now I just want to paint all the foxes. 🙁
But check out these pictures!! Stunning.

I believe that Kujacker has painted with pastel before! If not her, someone here did. Also, I’ve seen tutorials on youtube of people painting horses with pastels. So it definitely can be done!Edit: I think I should amend though, they seemed to be painting on the dust dry, and they used an aerosol to fix the pigment in place. I don’t know if it would work with a liquid varnish, which is why I haven’t tried it yet.

Edit: And provided these guys are still here after payday, I am definitely going back for another one of these. Maybe two if kitsune are not going to restock for Christmas.
November 18, 2014 at 6:53 am in reply to: Opal Dragon: PYOs *Tranquil Grotto, Demeter, Cloud Nine added 2/2* #921983I second prez’s comment. Knowing now just how hard it is to keep details like that so even and without running together or leaking to a different part or having your hand shake and accidentally painting the wrong place–wow, the mane and tail are just terrific.
Wow! You’re getting these done so quickly. Go you! I love the blues you’re working with, they speak to my soul. (I color in general, and the brighter the better, but blue most especially…) The dragon with the magenta wings also reminds me of Lisa Frank! Ah, my childhood. Good job! Looking forward to seeing more. 🙂
Wow I’m behind in responses!! Sorry guys, it’s been a busy week at work. XD; Thank you to everyone for all of your encouragement and kind comments, it really means a lot given the crowd it’s coming from!!
@etruscan
It really is. I think the last painting I did was either watercolors or oils, and that’s very different, so it’s been a bit of an adjustment. I’ll get there, I just have to be that dreaded p-word… patient! xD@Kim
Thank you! Next time I’ll consider antiquing before I add the stripes, if I really want it. I definitely don’t want to lose the current effect now, though, so I think I’ll take your advice and leave it. 🙂@Kujacker
Seriously high praise!! I would have spat my tea if I’d been drinking. Do you have any examples of antiquing with a bright color? I’ve never seen that in action and now I’m curious…@Amstaff
I want him to be finished tooo… I had to work Sunday night and Monday night so I haven’t been able to work on him at all this week, it’s bumming me out seeing him all half painted on my table. But I worked really hard today and finished everything in advance so hopefully tonight I can work on him a little. I won’t be able to *finish*, but maybe this coming weekend since I have a long weekend it will be possible. *-*@Branzyboo
For the orange I got, I used a drop of cadmium red and… three drops of yellow. I forget which yellow it is; I will look it up this evening when I get home after pet-sitting my friend’s cat. 🙂@MandBsMom
Waiting for things to dry is terrible; I actually started lichen in August and had to stop because the humidity here was so intense things were staying tacky way too long. Now it’s gotten cold and dry enough suddenly that I’m having the opposite problem; even my palette is drying out too fast. I’ve found that wrapping it in some plastic and using just a little bit of the retarder helps though. Other than that, I just add a plain medium to spread the color more; my gloss/varnish goes on afterward in a separate coat I paint on because I couldn’t get any of the sprays shipped to me and I couldn’t find any aerosol types in Japan. I agree with you 150% about it helping with anxiety and boredom; I have been so much happier and relaxed on the days that I’m able to paint that it’s kind of unreal. I’m going to be sad when I run out of things to paint, especially since the foxes *just* ran out in the store before I could buy one. /pouts@Falcolf
Doooo iitttt it’s seriously a lot of fun. I mean that first bit of a learning curve where you’re trying to figure out every thing isn’t quite so great but once you get past the initial phase it’s a lot of fun and really relaxing. It helps me pass time I might otherwise be bored and terribly unproductive.Ugh. And they’ve really taken over the forum. That’s such a cruddy thing to do to people. 🙁
November 16, 2014 at 7:26 am in reply to: First PYO Dragon: Updated first post with daughter's dragon. (11/21/14) #921896Thanks for the compliments!
The one painted after this will be a father-daughter piece. I’m her dad. 🙂
I will be sure to update with pictures.
I’m not sure what I will have this dragon holding. I need to ponder that some.
Oh, whups!! Sorry for assuming you must have been mom. I think it’s because of my own two parents, my dad could craft stuff (he built our swing set) but my mom was the one who did painting and sewing. That’s really awesome you were able to do this for her though. Looking forward to seeing your next piece!
The other thing we could do instead of grab bags is have a batch of things all painted differently, like the grab bags, but sold individually in the store, (or maybe etsy) like we do with the “Stray Cat edition” and the baby kirins.
Pam hates this idea because each piece would need to be photo’d individually and it would be a big pain , but that way people could pick and choose, and wouldn’t be getting a color they don’t like!
OR we could have a bunch of mini-batches of colors… a dozen or so of each grab-bag-like color so Pam would only need to photo one, or maybe the whole small group could be pictured.
Like, say I painted a dozen racoon-bat-eared foxes. They wouldn’t be ooaks like the true grabbags, but they would be plenty weird.
Takes away the suspense-thrill though. Not nearly as much fun.
I really like the grab bags – both the suspense and the trading (not that I trade all that much, but still..).
I also think, as others have mentioned, that smaller batches would most likely lead to fewer people being able to get at least the one or two that are allowed in the recent releases.
It’s nice the that recent batches are big enough (Fennecs and Hippies as exceptions) that most people are able to get at least one.
I mentioned in another post that I also like that the batches are big enough to go back and get more after the limits are lifted. I like the initial limits, though, too. It keeps it fair and lets the most people have access to your art.
To wrap up, I think that Windstone (you, of course and the rest of “team Melody”) does a wonderful job in all aspects of customer service and really works hard to ensure the greatest fairness to its customers of any company I know.
You are high on the list of things I am thankful for. 🙂
Here here! I know what I’ll be saying thanks for when I celebrate *my* thanksgiving! (Or well. Some of what I’m thankful for! Hehe)
November 16, 2014 at 3:17 am in reply to: 11/5/14 Grab Bag Baby Poad picture thread (Hoppies and Hippies) #921891And the third hoppy! I was really shocked when I got these pictures; like I said I thought that this last little poad was almost entirely blue. But lo, it’s much more colorful than that!
Looks like I got my purple poad after all!! I’m thrilled!
November 16, 2014 at 1:09 am in reply to: 11/5/14 Grab Bag Baby Poad picture thread (Hoppies and Hippies) #921889Alright, pictures of the first two, incoming!! My mother is not a master photographer so I had to do some minor touch-ups with photoshop to overcome shadows, so the colors on your monitor may not be 100% accurate, but they ought to be close.
This is the li’l red eyed baby. I totally didn’t notice it when my mom showed me him on Skype, but he actually has some blue around his feet. I really adore his little chest markings. Somehow they seem very masculine. “Look at my dangerous red chest! Ribbit-Chirp! I mean…. what sound do I make, anyway?”
Hoppy number two! Not quite rainbow-y, but a good transition from red-to-blue. I think it actually starts as a deep red on its top-most part and becomes a kind of carmine-y to orange color about midway before shifting to blue, but unfortunately these photos had some extreme shadow going on in them so it’s hard to say with much certainty.Branzyboo, tempest, dragonmedley–I love yours, all gorgeous!!!
I also got to see the third one finally. It is a very, very vibrant blue-and-black hoppy with matching blue eyes. I think it will go really well with my Blue Morpho sculpts. Actually, as a collection, the three hoppies I have now could be seen as siblings. I was pretty concerned about wanting one with at least some blue and one with red as well, and I seem to have gotten both those colors in spades, so I cannot say I’m displeased. As soon as I have pictures of the third, I will post those as well.Still, I am debating possibly ordering one or two more for myself for Christmas. I really wanted some in other colors (like purple, or green, or most especially that blue and brown fellow), and with black eyes. I will consider it after payday, which is actually coming up this week. 🙂
November 15, 2014 at 1:22 pm in reply to: 11/5/14 Grab Bag Baby Poad picture thread (Hoppies and Hippies) #921861Lasohaney I would love to see pics! Your rainbow one sounds like one I was looking for!
As an update, my missing box did not show up today. I even talked to the neighbor in the basement suite to ask if she had seen my box yesterday and she said she had seen 2 boxes outside the door yesterday, not 3 so I know they did not deliver 3 boxes, just 2. So I was on the phone today with Canada Post and USPS trying to track it down. Canada Post told me to inform the sender (I e-mailed Susie) and to talk to USPS about investigating where the box went but when I talked to USPS she did not even know how to get a hold of Canada Post and said she couldn’t file a claim because it was First Class International shipping. Well I didn’t want a claim filed. I just wanted to track down where my box went. So I talked to Canada Post again and got a guy who figured out how to e-mail the depot where all the deliveries leave from on delivery trucks and he took down my information and said they would e-mail me about the status of my box and what happened. I even checked with the post office nearby but they didn’t have it so whoever was supposed to deliver my box and scanned it as delivered either still has it or it’s on a truck still or back at the depot. I don’t think they are open on the weekend so I really hope they update me by Mon. if they track it down and can re-deliver it or leave it at a post office for me to pick up. I am still so worried! With that said I did manage to get pics on my cell phone of the other poads we got in which are two hoppy ones but I really want my hippie and hoppy in the missing box
As soon as I’ve got the pictures, I’ll figure out how to post em up here for people to see. 🙂 I don’t think the first one is quite so rainbow, iirc it was just red-to-blue, but it made me happy.
I’m really sorry to hear though that your box is still missing!! I hate to hate on the postal service, because I know that there are workers who work very hard indeed, but it’s so frustrating when things like this happen… I have a package that I paid 2 day shipping on and although it arrived at a sorting facility not 30 minutes from my home address by car, and despite getting there at 7:30 AM, ithey apparently couldn’t get it together and make the shipping deadline and it’s being delivered a day late. :/ Thanks, USPS. Hopefully your box will turn up, I know you’re doing everything in your power to see to it that it gets to you. I’ve had times where I screwed up and wrote the wrong address on packages and still managed to get things to their right owner, so don’t give up, I still have hope it’ll find its way to you!!
In the meantime, try to take heart, the two hoppies you posted earlier are super pretty!!
November 15, 2014 at 3:13 am in reply to: First PYO Dragon: Updated first post with daughter's dragon. (11/21/14) #921849I think this is beautiful!! Your daughter’s very lucky to have a mom who puts so much love and thought into her gifts. 🙂
/pines for those standing kirin
November 15, 2014 at 2:15 am in reply to: 11/5/14 Grab Bag Baby Poad picture thread (Hoppies and Hippies) #921847I finally got to see two out of three of my hoppies this morning!!! For whatever reason, my mother left the third box at home instead of taking it with her on her weekend travel, I guess since my brother bought it technically? Lol
Anyway, no pictures at the moment because it was dark where she is but she promised to get some photos tomorrow! For now a description will do. First hoppy has blue eyes and goes red to blue down his back in stripes and has blue circles on his bum. He actually reminds me a lot of Serendipity’s fourth fellow, though maybe a little less variance in color. His paint job is very very nice though, I’m quite pleased!
Second fellow has RED eyes!! I am so thrilled. His body is black on the front for the most part except for two small red markings and then he’s a bright bright red up and down his back. Very striking and I love that his eyes match.
So now it’s time to check out the third one if I can reach my brother and man oh man I really really hope it’s one with black eyes. Actually, specficially, I’m really hoping it’s the hoppy with brown and blue on it, that would be just PERFECT. Or maybe a purple, but I think the purple may be all gone now. I just have to get a hold of my brother….
