I Don’t know if it is different in other Provinces, because Kim’s fees seem very low to me; I am in Ontario. Hope that helped a bit. I guess the short answer is, you MIGHT pay tax when it crosses 😉
I am in Alberta so maybe it has something to do with taxes? Our provincial tax is 5% here but customs is federal right? I don’t know if maybe each province is charged differently though? Most of my packages come through customs in Richmond, B.C. so maybe they charge differently at the border in the east? I don’t think I have paid more than 10%. The post office told me that if something is under $100 value and marked a gift, it shouldn’t get charged customs but if it is over $100, even if it’s marked a gift it can be charged. I would say maybe 80% of the small boxes I have gotten in the last couple years haven’t been charged customs but most of the big ones have been charged.
My understanding is that any package valued at $20 Canadian or more can be hit with fees ($40 or more if it’s marked as a gift), but they rarely apply it to low value packages (it happened to me once on a $24 package). Whether or not Customs actually decides to charge you seems to be fairly random. If you do get charged, the formula is this:
item value (converted to $ Canadian) x your provincial tax + $10 Customs fee
For example, a $150 USD package shipped to Ontario would be $210 CAD x 13% HST + $10 = $37.30
But hopefully everyone’s ki-rins sneak past Customs altogether. 🙂
Maybe I will try that. Good idea! The emperor is one of my favorites. Thanks for giving me an excuse to paint one. Yay!!!!
*gasp* YAY!!!! 😀
You love painting emperors, I love collecting emperors -what a happy coincidence. I’m sure it will look amazing. Have fun painting, Laurie!
That Cedar Wood male ki-rin is a stunner; great job, Laurie! You really captured that warm wood look perfectly. I think I would faint if I saw an emperor dragon painted like that (winkwinknudgenudge). 😉

Dreamscape looks like a blue raspberry version of Fireberry. I like it! 🙂
Oh wow, Hannah, he’s gorgeous! I’m not a huge fan of the baby pegasus sculpt, but yours could make me a convert. I’m sure you will have no trouble finding a trade for your tiger pinto.
The gorgeous Corn Snake emperor dragon test paint on Ebay right now reminds me a bit of the old brown colour scheme, and that makes me wish for a new run of emperor dragons in brown. I realize that they were done in brown years ago and are retired, but that brown -with all of its purple interference- was markedly different from the rest of the brown dragon family. Maybe Windstone could paint a limited run of “version 2” brown emps that look more like the brown dragons currently in the store. Maybe give them orange eyes instead of blue to further differentiate them from the old brown emperors, which are so rare now that most people have no hope of completing their brown dragon families. I would be on a V.2 brown emperor like white on rice. 😀
That corn snake emperor looks striking. I would have liked it better if there was more reddish brown and less white on its sides like on the neck, but otherwise it looks great. I really like how each of Laurie’s super detailed emperors look totally unique.
Aside from Windstones, I collect action figures, statues, and busts from the Alien movies. The prizes of my collection are three life-size alien heads (each about 34″ long) and a 28″ tall maquette of the original 1979 Alien. I also have some Predators too. Beyond that, I have a collection of Peter Stone and Breyer model horses in the traditional size, and several animal figures from companies like Schleich, Safari, and CollectA.
I used to collect books and ran out of shelf space to hold them, so I bought a Kindle. Now I can hold a hundred books in one hand. 🙂
Those are super cute. I just wish they were larger.
January 22, 2016 at 7:18 pm in reply to: Safari | Simple | Hoppy – GB Young Poad Show Off Thread! #940340I thought I could sit out these latest batches of grab bag young poads, but when I bought my color-shift cougars and saw that there were still hoppy poads left, I couldn’t help myself. I didn’t really have anything in particular in mind that I wanted, and was pleasantly surprised with what I got. My hoppy is vivid black and red, with a dark grey beak and eyes. Some of the photos make her spots look orange, but they are all solid red. I’m calling her Firespot. 🙂
I used to think sitting spectrals looked weird, with their globe eyes and pointy lizard faces, but I have since fallen hard for the sculpt. I have five of them now, and I’ll probably get more in the future. With their large smooth scales and upright wings, they make a great canvas for virtually any color scheme, including Cosmic Shift.
Speaking of Cosmic Shift, I normally prefer more natural-looking colors on the griffins, but this new one looks great!
January 15, 2016 at 8:20 pm in reply to: New Color Shift Cougars in SEVEN different colors! & Lucky Llamas in our store 1-12-2016 #939938I know what you mean, rock-reader. Part of me was like, “They’re only $135! Get all seven colors!”, while another part of me was like, “Have you lost your mind?!?” Striking a balance between the collecting impulse and pragmatism can be a tough compromise sometimes.
That Cosmic Shift fledgling looks to me like a color-shift version of Water Sprite. I love it!

I know, right? I’m super stoked to see them in person.
Wait a sec… My comment above could be construed to mean that I bought all seven colors, which I definitely did not do (although that would be AWESOME). I bought 3 cougars, green/purple, magenta/gold, and green/silver. They can form a conga line with my other pebble cougars, grab bag and production.
