Apologies in advance for the big pictures. Every time I shrank them I lost what little details my crappy phone camera picked up. As our hostess has yet to post photos, I finally decided to post the ones I had. This is Cosmo; he’s a papa fuu I painted for her (96037) for the swap. I think you mostly see everything with these pics, other than the silver beading that sits on his spin. The colors are mostly accurate too other than the grays and his mouth (pale peach gums and a pink tongue) are little washed out from the bright sunlight.
February 14, 2017 at 5:25 pm in reply to: Grab Bag Poads on Melodys Instagram Feb.13th, 2017 #1520492Technically Kickstarter isn’t a grab bag…I mean, yes, it seems like one of the tier rewards will be a random adult poad BUT we’ve no idea when the Kickstarter will launch. It could be two months from now, it could be a year from now. It’s definitely not something that a person sets up without some planning. Also, Melody might have been strategically working on these poads for awhile whenever she had some spare time; they’re obviously still works in progress and probably just a portion of what she has planned for the KS. If we’re lucky, maybe we’ll even see the hoarders make a resurgence for this.
If I had to guess, the next gb from the store will probably be the hatching pegasi that Melody was hoping to do around Easter. But that’s also assuming she’ll have time to do them and/or chooses to commit to them. If I recall, when she did the baby pegasus grab bag she said that the wings were a pain in the butt so she might change her mind about hatching pegs. Who knows!
There are some very beautiful collections so far. It’s great to see in-person photos of the hearth dragon too.
@phantomess – That lavendar rose OW is gorgeous! I love his smoky eyes! Major grats! Btw…the bat signal and Batman bust are fantastic.Mine came in and it was a fantasy koi type (brighter colors with koi patterning). She’s pretty enough, I suppose, if I end up stuck with her but I am looking to trade her.
She has metallic light grey/silver eyes, a white underside, yellowy-orange mane/tail/spinal ridge, with fish scale patterns in magenta, purple, and small touches of green.
That sounds like a squashed poad™. Now why would you want Ms. Melody to squash her poads™? 😛
She did “squash” her poads…into poad patches. 😉
Actually, the sitting baby KiRins are .24 cubic inches larger than the standing babies. Multiply that by 125, and you get 30 cubic inches more sculpt. Multiply that by the number of passes through the paint booth…
Someone more mathematically inclined might be able to calculate the surface area, but this is rough, based on the measurements in the store.
You’re a nutter. =P
Regardless, standing babies are nicely linear while sitting babies are condensed and curvy which I would imagine makes them a pain in the butt comparably.
I never complain about price and I know they are worth it but to not know what one I’m gonna get for the price… I gotta skip them this time around… poop
It’s a rough call to make. I know Melody didn’t think the batch could be divided but I wish it had (or had been smaller) to at least increase the chances of getting a likeable piece. I personally am not overly fond of most of the natural/koi ones and, comparably, the more outlandish ones seem to be smaller in number so it really would be a high-risk gamble.
Ah well, se la vie. Good luck to everyone!
I would imagine it comes down to a dollar amount per hour of work. Since the kirin babies are so small it takes that much more time to put in precise detailing without making a muddied mess of it.
It’s true that the standing baby kirin grab bags usually go for $150 but the SITTING baby kirin have a much more condensed body, which means a smaller canvas to work on, etc.
So, while the final price was a bit of a shock, it wasn’t entirely unexpected for many of us either.
I agree Mika! There were a LOT of beautiful pieces among the baby kirin. So much color and variety…Melody always seems to outdo herself. I kind of wish she hadn’t put as much detail into them and instead made them simpler with splashes of color if only to make them more affordable. >_< But I can’t deny that they’re absolutely gorgeous as is, too.
My favorite made it to the store photo too, just below the one you were talking about Mika:
I expect it’ll take a miracle or four for her to end up in my collection though. 🙁
I bit the inside of my cheek when I saw the price. 🙁
Siiiiiigh.
If you hold down your CTRL key and use the scroll wheel on your mouse at the same time, you can make the page show up larger so the pics will appear larger.
Yeah, but I was hoping to get a larger original file size. The original images here are on the small side (even if you right click + view image) so they end up really pixelated if you zoom in. The right click + view image does show better pictures but I’m still prefer a bigger file if at all possible (and ideally without being trouble to the busy folks at Windstones!).
Thanks though!
Could we get larger sizes of the sitting kirin class photos please Melody? They’re so tiny on the blog! Perhaps on deviantart, if possible?
Hrm…well I had a post and it disappeared. Maybe it vanishes if you’re trying to edit it and the editting time runs out.
Anyway…I was trepidatious about this swap as I couldn’t really crystallize what I wanted into a cohesive singular idea. My list of “what I wanted” was essentially: this is what I like, this is what I don’t like, here’s a few pictures of pretty things, do what you will.
Ciarnet suprised and delighted me with an adorable kittygriff painted loosely after a clouded leopard with the wings of one of the butterflies from the photos I provided. It’s fantastic! My photos don’t do the details justice, particularly the white fur resting against the black marks.
Thank you so much! And don’t worry about the shipping kerfluffle; it eventually arrived and wasn’t broken as it went to and fro and to again.
Seconding what StormDancer said. Dark purple or smoky grey (or both!) would be gorgeous on that blue.
I was thinking this color scheme would look nice.
I do really like darker blues, this one included.
With the colors being blue and red though (given blue as the primary) it might end up looking like an inversion of the carnelian’s colors or close to it (red primary with purple/blue accents). I suppose it would depend on how you paint it. Maybe instead of a red, a burnished coppery color?
