Urk, the flash seems a little bright. I like what I do see. The transitions from dark gray to pale give him a really neat sense of depth; I hope I’m not being fooled by the flash. I wish I could see him in the sun. I like the combination of blue and purple that you used, and the way those colors were included in a more subtle way on the body. He’s very handsome and a fitting counterpart for the Sunbeam!

I love the transition from copper to gold on his haunches and neck. The purple and red are fun and I agree, he’d look marvellous beside the Violet Wolf family. But it’s the copper and gold that I keep coming back to–that’s my favorite part of him. πŸ™‚
Ooo, and that rich dark red on the undersides of his wings. That’s downright yummy. Next to the colors of his body, it really pops!

Oh, they’re beautiful. I’m glad that there will be more than one, but the odds are against my being able to afford one . I’ll be watching, though!

Read and really enjoyed the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series. Williams’ work seems to take me at least two reads to properly appreciate, but that’s OK because there’s plenty of juicy story elements to enjoy on a second read!
I love Michael Whelan’s artwork and have a few prints of the cover art he did for Anne McCaffrey’s Pern series and Melanie Rawn’s dragon series (ack, can’t recall the name right now). There used to be calendars with Whelan’s art, too. I wish he’d re-release the prints from Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and Moreta: I’d love to have those. I haven’t even seen them on calendars.

I just finished reading what’s been posted so far, and I am definitely intrigued! I thoroughly enjoyed your descriptives of the different types of dragon (one of the biggest hang-ups I seem to have is developing distinct species of dragon; you do it with absolute aplomb) and would love to see some of your sketches. The story line is progressing well. I caught myself several times thinking, “She’s talking about California!” when you discussed the Mindhra philosophy and political shell-game. (It was kind of frightening, actually. We really do have people like that running this government. And dimwits like the “concerned citizen” shopowner who report the version that makes the most scandal and excitement, rather than taking a stand of common decency. Bah! πŸ‘Ώ They’ll do anything to get on a talk show!)
I think you’re taking this story down a good path and will be interested in reading more. There’s a verve to the telling that says you’re enjoying yourself: good! πŸ˜€ The structure of the culture feels solid, even if–as you said–there are details that you’d like to add. Some of the elements that you’ve included, such as the pending exit of the Great Horned Dragon, go beyond the average fantasy plotline.
If you would like to read an interesting take on dragons with riders, you might consider the “His Majesty’s Dragon” trilogy by Naomi Novik. I would certainly not say that you need to look to her work for any help–you’re doing great on your own! But it did make for an enjoyable read.
Of course, I have a terrible mockingbird streak when writing and tend to fall into the patterns of whatever author I’m reading at the time. This is of course very bad, and makes it risky for me to read anything related to what I’m writing about. Thank goodness for history, biology, medicine, and astrophysics books! They’re a good source of background detail and tidbits, and dry factual material drives the mockingbird right off. πŸ˜›

I ran across a book called “Mark Twain on the Damned Human Race” which, despite its title, is mostly funny. Apparently it’s a collection of writings that Twain considered too controversial and intended to have published several years after his death. There’ve been at least three versions printed, each one omitting certain articles that were delicate topics at the time. Some of the topics cut pretty close to the bone regarding human nature, and are funny. But Twain also makes some very cutting remarks on world affairs of the era, particularly the US’s involvement in the Philippines (ouch). It’s worth reading, but probably best taken in small bites.
Edit: I don’t know how I could have forgotten–try “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”, or any of the books with collected quotes by Twain.

Criminy! That poor dragon! πŸ™ (And she has such a pretty paint job, too–this is just tragic.) Well, as you’ve already heard, there are some extremely gifted repair people on this forum, and I’m sure you can get some good information on how to repair her. Personally, I should like to smack that seller upside the head, and I hope that they give you at least a partial refund. Bubble wrap is very nice, but it goes INSIDE a BOX, for crying out loud! 😑

I talked to the guy at Nature’s Treasures this morning. He’s very nice and was quite helpful. They still have the Lap Dragon in Peacock and a Unicorn Gargoyle, and possibly another set of the Oriental Dragons in Jade (he was sure of one set, but not the second). I was really surprised about the Oriental Dragons. He said that since they were retired, the store would only sell them in “family groups” of all three–this may explain why they still had some. They also keep the original boxes, and they double-box for shipping. πŸ˜€
I ordered a set of the Oriental Dragons; I don’t know if they’ll be the dark jade or the more emerald shade. I think I must be stark staring bonkers, doing this so soon after a move. 😳 I get into trouble at garage sales, too: “It’s a good deal! Who cares if it’s a stuffed owl and the Encyclopedia of the World in Thirty Volumes! It’s a good deal!” πŸ™„

I’d be interested in a Young Oriental in Ruby, if there should be one left over. I waited too long to get one. πŸ™ It’s probably just as well if it’s going to be a while before we know if there will be one left over . . . so my bank account can forgive me.

It’s possible that The Dragon’s Lair still has one rainbow hatching in stock. It’s still listed on their page, which is http://www.shopnh.com/dragons/index.asp (I think. You can also find it if you Google The+Dragon’s+Lair and look for the site with shopnh.com in its address.) I just ordered from them, and they seemed very nice and helpful. Good luck! πŸ™‚

Oh wow, all of those are coming out? This is either the best news so far this month or the start of an agonizing selection process, I’m not sure which. πŸ˜› I will be looking forward to seeing the photos when they’re released! I agree about the Coiled: the male is delightful, but I’ve been wanting to get a mother Coiled for ever so long. She’s got the most wonderful expression, sort of maternal and I-will-bite-you-now all at once.

Oh, don’t tell Greenpeace! They’d be bummed. (A highlight of a school boat trip was seeing the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior go past.) 8)
Hmm, an OW in rainbow? That could be really cool . . . but I’d have to see it to be sure. I’ve never known what to make of the red nose. It makes him look like he’s just come from a wild party. πŸ˜‰

Thanks! Please let me know if they need real names; I can see this turning into another “Love, Fuzzy” thing. (“We’ve got all these names but who ARE they . . .?”)

i wouldn’t worry at all about a fresh ow coming out too pinky, as i would think they all have the ruby painting techique pretty down pat by now.

Gosh, I hope so. It’s not an easy color to work with, I know, but the red on the Fledgeling is so droolsome! I like his paint job much better than the Male Dragon that’s been languishing in the local shop.

That’s such a beautiful PYO. The colors work so well–that shade of green is just right against the silver–and it’s hard to get green and silver to look so good together! (Our school colors were green and gray. Fairly awful shade of green it was. I wish they’d seen your dragon!) I also love the patterning. I’m sure he (or she) will do well for you on eBay. I’ll be watching, but I’ve been letting myself buy a little too freely lately. I need to behave. πŸ™
