I hatehatehate house sparrows. Not because they’re not cute…and those griffinlets are ADORABLE…but because of their constant and unmelodious chirping. Chirp. Chirp. Chirp. Now, house finches, that’s a different story. They sing. AND their pretty. But some of my favorite sparrows are the plains sparrows (I think that’s what they are). Plain greyish brown things, but they sing so nicely…
HA! I think my husband agrees with you there. Especially a few months ago when the babies were being extra loud.

-J R R TolkienI’ve painted a new pair of chicks. But these guys aren’t chicks, they’re life sized adults. 😉 They’re modeled on the house sparrows that we’ve got by the kazillion down here in sounthern Cali, a male and female. The male sports the lovely mahogany markings of the real birds, and the female is soft and demure like her living counter parts. I had a lot of fun painting their pretty little wings. ^_^
I managed a couple decent (for me) sketches for these little guys, on nice bristol board. There are a few smudges on them, because I can’t make a clean sketch for the life of me, but I sealed them so they shouldn’t smudge any more. 😉 Below are some terrible scans of them.
If you missed the blog entry on these little guys, check it out to see a couple other pics taken outside in the sun.

Ones I wish I had would be a gothic unicorn, Jens labadorite female griffin and babies, and a Bengal Griffin (I wish) 😀
…… oooh….. bengal griffin….. Have Melody or Jen claimed that one yet?? *itches for my paint brushes*

And now that he’s a frog, the only thing remaining unchanged is his eye color–kind of a clue that he’s a wizard turned into a frog. Eh? Just a thought. 😉
That’s exactly what I was thinking! 😉
I think I’ll name him Crispin.

I don’t have to tell you Arlla, but orange and blue are complementary so they look great next to each other.
For a warm-cool contrast, if you didn’t want blue since it’s used too much, what about lavender, purple, or royal blue? Or for similar tones, red like the frog prince.
Personally I’m quite fond of the light blue there though. 🙂
I agree about the hat and the orange eyes. As for other colors – royal blue looks terrible, there is no purple and there aren’t any lavender eyes in the right size. 😉 These were really the only two I’ve got that look pretty good.

-J R R TolkienAh ha! I’ll bet that’s what they are. Well, I have a bunch and no old toads… shucks!

He’s adorable! 🙂
The trouble is…. blue goes with EVERYTHING!!! Well, almost. For some reason, it looks good with just about every coloration. I hate that it ends up in everything too, but sometimes it just looks best!
I’ve got these nifty metalic gold eyes from the factory, with oblong pupils – they look very froggy. But alas, they don’t fit ANYTHING! I don’t know what the heck they were for! They’re just a little too small for the frog wizard… sigh! Maybe they were for one of the very old original animals.

-J R R TolkienAnother little guy, just for fun 😉
I can’t decide between orange and blue – post your input! (to me, orange makes him look a little sinister, blue makes him look a little confused, like ‘whoa, how did I end up a frog again??’ …I like em both though 😉 )
He’s darker than he looks in the photos – trouble with my camera 😛"He that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom."

Well, I’m in a neighboring county. 🙂 I live in Murrieta, about 2 hours from you.

-J R R TolkienPapa quagga!
I’m really happy with this guy. I really took my time on him and he just turned out nice. He’s got the same golden tint of the foal vs. the more coppery coat of the female. I shopped eyes in again as I don’t have any that fit – sorry about that!
What do you think – you guys want a quagga grand uni?? (I’ve only got the one until more molds are made, so if there’s a particular color you’d like on a grand uni, post it here!)
and also, just for fun – here’s “Pearl.”
She’s a one of a kind Sea Jewel mermaid. The photos don’t do her justice – these little irridecent guys are impossible to photograph. I played around with the sealant on her, for instance on the rock – the ‘dry’ part of it has a matte finish and the ‘wet’ lower areas are glossy. Her skin is a pearly fish belly pale, with a slight bronzing on her back and hands. She’s dripping in pearls, hence her name. 😉 It’s difficult to see in the pic, but there are subtle irridecent blue spots on the pink of her tail.

I’m working on the male now. I have a grand uni but I’m not sure he’ll be a part of this family… I suppose I should have the factory send me a young unicorn to complete this family. I guess we’ll see how they do!

-J R R Tolkien😀 Thanks guys! I’m so happy you like her. Yeah, the mane came out alright, despite it being all long and un zebra-ish. Melody’s carved it so that it antiques really nicely, making every hair stand out. Painting these really makes you appreciate her carving even more – this mare has details down to the tiny little whisker bumps on her muzzle! You’re awesome, Melody.

-J R R TolkienFinished the momma, working on the daddy now…
Here she is minus jewel and eyes – I photoshopped eyes in. Getting those stripes on is a lot harder on the adults than the foal! Her coat has a bit more copper in it than the foal, who I imagine to be a colt. His daddy, like him, will have more of a golden color. I don’t know if real quaggas had any kind of sexual dimorphism, but I’m making it subtle. 😉
You can see some of my paint strokes on this one… I’ll try and take some closeups that show it.

-J R R TolkienHow cool! Each chick has a parent! ^_^ Congrats to you both, and yes, please do post pictures if you’re inclined – I’d love to see them in their new homes.
