Thanks Samwise, and you’re very welcome Lysithian and Anichol! Stephanie, now you’ve got me curious if your sphere would fluoresce under UV light – some agates do!

Truth be told I’ve spent too much time staring at a lot of these minerals in rock shops over the years, so it tickles me when I recognize them 🙂 I hope everyone ends up liking their dragon even more for knowing something about the stone. I don’t subscribe myself to the metaphysical traits that some associate with certain gems and minerals, but for those that do there’s another added dimension to the stones. I just think it’s great that Melody was able to find such a range of spheres to compliment all of the varying colors in the curlies!

    On that note:
Dracco’s curlie has a classic red jasper.
Hannah you’re correct that yours has a unakite sphere. Love those orange eyes too!
Tinks’s dragon looks like another jasper, or possibly a finely-banded mookaite.
Kelseyslk, your dragon in the classifieds has a sodalite sphere.

I’ll have to take pics of my dragon tomorrow when the lighting is better. He’s the blue and turquoise curlie in the third row from the left, fourth one down. He has a lovely moss agate sphere!

Such beautiful dragons! Mine is sitting in an unopened box next to me – I’m so excited! But I couldn’t open it before the geologist in me gets the itch scratched to help people ID their dragon’s stone globes.

Anichol, I’ll second Etruscan by saying that one looks like rhodochrosite.
Mashubert, yours has a manmade opalescent glass called ‘opalite’.
Drag0nfeathers, yours is a jasper of some sort. The black feathery lines are dendritic mineral growths.
Copper83 yours looks like a jasper too. If the gray stripes appear metallic, it could be tiger iron or a banded ironstone.
Stephanie I’m not sure about yours – my bet’s on chalcedony/agate, or it could be a cloudy fluorite or amethyst.
Lysithan yours has a jasper known as dalmatian jasper.

Whee, the nerd in me is now sated 😉 Thanks Etruscan for starting the thread, and everyone for posting pictures!

Hi all! I know it’s been a while since these were released, but did either of these find their way to a home with a forum member?

     photo dragonslooking_zps5d354946.jpg

These are some of my favorites from the batch that I never saw posted here, unless I missed them… I know some people choose not to post pictures of their grab bags to avoid being hassled about trading or selling, and that’s cool with me. Just curious, is all!

in reply to: What kind of snake? #911269

It’s really tough to tell from this angle! Many southern watersnake species have evolved to mimic the water moccasin’s coloration because then predators avoid them, mistaking them for the venomous snake. Watersnakes will often flatten themselves too, squishing their heads into the wider spade shape of a cottonmouth, again mimicking them. A lot of the differences between the two are in the shape of the head and neck and position of the eyes – parts you don’t want to get anywhere near if you’re still trying to figure out which one it is! Here’s a link I found that might give you some peace of mind…

    http://ufwildlife.ifas.ufl.edu/water_moccasin_watersnake_comparison.shtml

If your yard or under the house is offering a dry safe harbor away from the floods, the snake may take off when the water recedes.

Two of the best tips for scaring snakes off (worked well for rattlers on the prairie, anyway!) I can offer are when you are outside 1) sweep a walking stick across the ground or water in front of you like a blind person would use a cane. If you sweep close to the snake it will move, alerting you to its location before you’re within striking distance. This will ensure you don’t step on one accidentally, and give you a tool to shoo it off. 2) if you are walking near places where the snake might shelter (piles of rocks or sticks, near the foundation of a house or shed), stomp your feet as you go. The snake will feel the vibrations and retreat.

Good luck! I like snakes, but don’t like second-guessing my steps 🙂

Two more dragons have come to live with me, at least for now 🙂

This one reminds me of the tail end of a sunset – deep lavender-blue with dusty pink and gold. There’s awesome detail in the shading from color to color, leaving pink and gold sparkles dusting and grading over all but the largest scales. Light yellow forehead jewel, light purple claw jewel, and metallic pink eyes. She’ll be up for trade!

And I was thrilled to find the Siamese in the second box! Compared to a lot of the other dragons she actually seems simple, haha. Mostly a creamy pearl and non-metallic brown, with metallic blue spots and copper accents on the horns. Crystal white jewels and metallic light orange eyes. So very on the fence about trading her… if you land my number one and don’t like it though, drop me a line! 🙂

in reply to: Jobs Windstone Collectors Have? Career Advice? #910994

Hey Dragoneer! I’ve been collecting little by little since my late teens in college (I’m 32 now). Almost all my production pieces came to me second hand with damage. But I have fixed them up, and love them even more for the work I put in. As time goes by you’ll find more opportunities for bargains at thrift stores, garage sales, and good old eBay, as well as get hooked into plenty of grab bags and new sculpts here on the website! I don’t have a large collection, partly because of budget and partly because I don’t have the space 🙂

I’m a paleontologist. It’s a pretty darn specialized job and took me many years to land a stable position. My father went through the college struggle of dream job vs. profitable job (he wanted to be meteorologist but went for a business degree instead), and so I got used to thinking about that from a very early age. Though my career choice doesn’t bring in a lot of money, I love what I do. For my husband and I, it’s meant second hand furniture, no vacations to speak of, and not eating out at restaurants, but we can still live comfortably and focus on paying off student loans and saving up for owning our own house someday. One thing that helps me spring for Windstones every now and then is that I make and sell things on Etsy. I love sewing and crafting as a hobby, and running a shop has been a lot of fun, as well as a good excuse to set aside time to keep crafting.

I hear you when you say the only thing that holds your concentration is art – when I was in school the only way I could absorb things from textbooks and lectures was if I was doodling to keep the other part of my brain occupied 🙂 Now I almost never draw, and my ability to do so has gone through the floor for lack of practice!

in reply to: Grab Bag Mini Keeper Photo Thread #910652

Wahoo, mine arrived! I’m loving all of the beautiful detail on these, they’re surprising me in ways that get lost in the class photos, handy as they are. Here are the pair!
     photo P1080758480x640_zps7336edc6.jpg

All shades of metallic purples and pinks, with silver details, metallic periwinkle eyes, a violet jewel in the forehead and an amethyst gem in the claws. There are purple ‘magic glitter’ sparkles mixed in with the darker purples, and the piece overall is ‘antiqued’ in metallic blue/purple. She’s in group 6 of the class photos, in the top left corner.

This one is orangey-yellow and green, with accents in turquoise, copper, green, and pink. Yellow-green eyes, a peridot forehead gem, and an amber yellow gem in the claws. Really awesome tiny dots of turquoise, green, and gold flecking the edges of the wings, and the piece is ‘antiqued’ with a metallic pink/purple color. This one is in group 6 of the class photos, top row and second from the left.

Although the yellow one is really growing on me, they’ll both be up for trade…

Could request small dragons? I would probably use tracing paper too, but does anyone have photos of small dragons to ref?

I’ve got some small dragon pictures! I hope they’ll do in a pinch. Here’s the link to the Photobucket gallery (I’ve got a set of Ki-rin pics there too if they’re useful.).

in reply to: 2014 New Years Resolutions! #907150

Hmm, resolutions! I have a couple:

First is to make my husband smile more. This year was a big one for us – after several years of being engaged we are now married! He’s been very patient and understanding for all the times I’m tired and burned out from work. And when he smiles, I smile! If I can focus on him I’ll get out of my ruts and we’ll both be happier.

Second is to eat better quality food. I’ve decided that spending a little more time and money to procure local, organic, etc. food is an investment in our current and future health. We’ve always tried to eat healthy, and rarely eat out, but I’m hoping to put in the extra effort for better ingredients this year.

Sorry that it’s taken me so long to post a photo of the lovely ornament I received! I was away for the holidays and am still getting my act together now that I’m back home 🙂 Here is the beautiful origami snowflake I received from Kiya. It’s up on my tiny but happy norfolk pine, which serves as a Christmas tree this time of year 🙂
     photo P1060428_zps59b0454f.jpg
Thank you so much, it fits in beautifully and I’ll make sure to store it carefully so I can hang it up for years to come. I haven’t seen anything from the person I sent the ornament I made to, so if pictures don’t surface I may post my own eventually. Anyway, this was my first year doing the swap, and it was wonderful! Thank you again Foxfeather for organizing this.

Thank you Melody for the beautiful card! Both the inside and outside images are just too cute – I love the facial expressions on the little ones.

Although…. a sinister part of me is thinking that Santa met with a very *hungry* kirin family this Christmas, and that’s how they got the suit 😀
