That’s pretty cool! I’ve been out of the loop for a little while since I made a career shift, but it’s nice to hear that they’re looking for ways to treat once you’ve come down with symptoms. I’ll have to go look that up.
Somehow I suspect it’s only for people, though, and unvaccinated animals still stand a chance of losing their heads over a bite.
Rabies vaccines are required for animals most places in the US I believe – especially since rabies is soooo deadly to humans if unidentified and untreated early.
Rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms manifest (cuz by then it’s in your brain). The shots people get when they’ve been exposed are pretty much vaccines. The further away from your head when you’re bitten, the longer it takes to get to your brain, since it travels up your nerves. Anywhere from 5-50 days from exposure. Once symptoms show, it takes about 10 days. That’s why most quarantines are 10 days. If the animal isn’t dead at the end of it, it’s probably fine.
I remember reading about ProHeart 6 reactions when I was still a CVT and was kind of glad the vet I worked for immediately stopped offering it when I showed him the article I was reading.
As to whether or not you vaccinate your pet, it’s up to you, but if you are in the US, be aware that in some areas/states a rabies vax at the very least is required by law. If your animal bites someone and is not vaccinated it risks a very grisly fate and there will be nothing you can do about it. Most unvaccinated animals are simply quarantined for 10 days, but that’s not always the case. You cannot test for rabies on a live animal.

On LJ I have my list of friends, but that seems to be dwindling over the course of time (which makes me sad, LJ is my favorite format).
I still haven’t figured out tumblr to the best of my advantage. It’s kind of a confusing format for me.
I went to see my mother-in-law tonight to get away for a bit, and when I got home I automatically looked to her sleeping place and remembered she’s not there and burst into tears.
I did the equivalent of this the day after I had to send my GSD on ahead of me. I got into a wrestling match with my father and had to abort and burst into tears when I started to call Ende to chew on his knees and realized that wasn’t going to work anymore.
I am sorry you had to say good-bye to your baby, mourn her, and look forward to the next kitty and here’s to 18 years with that one too.
