In addition to “Individuals/users may only contact others to inquire about specific pieces NOT listed as “for sale or trade” once annually, and may under no circumstance “hound”, harass, bother, or otherwise bother that individual repeatedly.”…unless the individual requests you not contact them about it again. In this case, you may NOT contact them once annually?? I’m just thinking about those who do not want to be asked again…

I like the wording of the exception to the rule. If it’s something you don’t want to say publically, then perhaps you shouldn’t send it in a PM (when it comes to this sort of thing)

I agree. I will add something like that to the rule when I actually write it.

I think it sounds good and I like the suggestion Angelika_Zen has added to help cover those that do not want to be contacted after the initial contact. It seems to cover all of the issues for everyone.

My only concern is to figure out how to make sure that everyone sees the new updates as many don’t read the rules and guidelines after they initially join. And that’s hoping they actually read them when they did join.

Perhaps the rules could be sent out in an email as a friendly reminder once a year or so? That way no one can claim that they “couldn’t” find the information or had no knowledge of it.

Not sure if we can send mass emails to the forum members, and if we can I’m not sure I’d want to… I can make it an announcement (across all forums) and have Melody mention it on the next raffle announcement/winner though.

        Re: the Raffle Exception suggestion

The difference I see between raffle prizes and ebay or grab bag pieces is this … people can choose whether to show items in their collections. If you post a photo of a Windstone, you know that you may get inquiries about trading or selling it. This is why some people choose not to post photos. However, Melody ANNOUNCES the winner of a raffle. Everybody knows who has this special piece.

As Natasha said, listing a raffle prize in a “Want” ad is fine. It is fine if the owner wants to offer a raffle prize for trade or sale. But, if the winner of a raffle prize does not want to sell or trade the piece, or to deal with several inquiries about it, I feel that the winner should be protected. Just my thoughts on the matter!

Hmm, great point. The raffle winner is announced publicly! Whereas everyone else can choose not to let anyone know, if they want, that they won or bought a given piece from ebay or from another individual. Hmmm.

What if the rule goes like this (I will figure out exactly how to word it later, this is just the “spirit” of the rule):

Individuals/users may only contact others to inquire about specific pieces NOT listed as “for sale or trade” once annually, and may under no circumstance “hound”, harass, bother, or otherwise bother that individual repeatedly. Individuals MUST respect the choices of other Windstone owners to reject or ignore requests to sell. Those found to be in violation of this rule will receive a warning, then a temporary ban (I need to make sure temp bans are possible), and repeat offenders may be permanently banned as determined by the Administrator (I think John would have final say here).

Exception: Due to the public nature of raffle winner announcements, users may NOT directly contact raffle winners within one calendar year of their win to inquire about availability. Requests to buy/trade MUST, in this situation, be made as comment replies to the “Raffle Winner Announcement” thread on the forum, and must be kept to a singular, polite request, e.g. “Congratulations on your win! I really love this piece. If you ever decide to sell or trade in the future, I welcome your contact as I would be interested in buying/trading.”

What do you think? That way if someone that wins a raffle DOES want to sell, they can see who is interested. I know that some people like to “offer” to buy in private, and normally that is fine, but with a raffle piece I think we should make an effort not to bombard the private messages of an individual.

I am curious about the raffle exception. Would it not suffice to say that it’s not allowed to contact an owner more than once to express interest? This would cover ALL pieces. Why is a raffle item different than something someone fought hard for on eBay or got in a grab bag? I have seen many raffle winners go on to sell their piece.

How do you use this forum? I scroll straight to the bottom and look at “active topics” and ” new topics”. Do you do this too?

I do exactly the same, though admittedly I have way less time to check the Forum these days so it’s the most convenient way for me to get an idea of what’s going on at a glance.

I want to write an official rule to make sure people know that harassing one another to sell pieces is not okay. We have a “no harassment” rule, but maybe it’s unclear on what it means to harass, especially when trying to buy a piece that’s not for sale…

As community members, how do you suggest I approach this?

I don’t really want to go so far as to say that simply contacting each other about any item NOT listed in the classifieds is against the rules, unless you guys really think it should be this way. I have always felt that “I like your dragon, please let me know if you ever want to sell it someday” is pretty innocent (if not repeated!). Am I wrong?

I’d appreciate your thoughts on this. I don’t want the forum to be unwelcoming.

Disclaimer: I suspect some of you will have different opinions on what level of contact/inquiry is okay … I will consider all standpoints and do my best to compromise the best solution for everyone.

The red used on the ruby dragons is not metallic (most metallic reds look kinda awful, and flat, and blah). It’s a translucent red painted/glazed on top of a metallic base coat (in this case, gold). It’s a thin layer of a rich saturated red on top of the gold; the metallic look is from the gold underneath creating depth. I hope this helps!

While I can’t control what people do with email, if anyone is ever feeling harassed via forum comments or private messages (through the forum), please let me or one of the head honchos at Windstone know, as that sort of behavior is not allowed here.

Want ads are passive, and not a problem. 🙂
Writing to someone, via PM, Facebook, comments… meaning you are directing your wish at a person, can be harassing if done more than once*.

                    * I guess if enough time has passed, say, 10 years since the forum stated, and you asked again, it wouldn’t really be harassing them. General rule of thumb though, if you ask once and get told “no”, or you aren’t replied to, it’s probably best to let it go!

                    E.G.

“Dear Jennifer, I see you have a Labradorite Griffin in your collection. I really want one, if you want to sell it let me know!”
                    (later)
“Hi again Jennifer, I just wanted to remind you that I really love your Labradorite Griffin, please don’t forget about me if you ever sell it!”
                    (later)
“Oh Jennifer what a cool photo of your collection! I see the Labradorite Griffin peeking out, I’d love to give him a home someday, hehe!”

You can see how even when said in a friendly tone, these messages can get very wearisome!

A want ad, on the other hand, is completely passive.
“WANTED: If anyone has any of these and wish to sell them, I’m happy to pay top dollar for them! List includes: Labradorite Giffin, Moonstone Mother Dragon, Pizza Poad #3, etc”

You can easily see the difference. 🙂

Sellers can avoid this and keep the best records by sending an invoice through Paypal to their buyers. It’s free (no extra fees) and easy to do. Just log into Paypal and click “Manage/create invoices”. It walks you though it!

Yep! You have to “pump” or press these types of markers, because it’s not normal ink coming out but a type of metallic paint. Get a sheet of paper to blot on, and press the nib into the paper several times to “pump” some paint into the nib. Blot on the paper until you have the flow you like, then use it to detail your Windstone. It should just take one stroke to do each detail, as the paint flows a bit when applied correctly, to create a smooth look. It should take a relatively light touch. IF not, then there isn’t enough paint in the nib, and you will need to pump/press the nib on your blotting paper again. Touchups can be done with a very light touch (when the nib is fully ‘charged’ with paint).

Alas! I don’t have any with that amber-gold color, I could only get you “sorta close” with an orange. If you want to match it you’ll probably have to get in touch with Tohickon.

Hi Jennifer! Thanks so much for taking time to look! I greatly appreciate it ♥ I’ll probably try Tohickon to get a match, as I’m really missing the amber/gold. Just scared to pry out the remaining cracked eye! LOL…

Yes, if they were glued in with white glue, soaking them with warm water is the way to do it.
It doesn’t look as though the actual glass eye is damaged, just the paint on the back, so the eyes are probably salvageable.
Unless your new glass eyes are made with a fired-on glass paint, don’t glue them back in with white glue touching the paint. It will eventually pull paint off of the glass. It will even pull off epoxy paint. We tried that!
(However If the eyes are painted with epoxy paint and glued in with epoxy, they seem to hold together. The experimental one I have is still good after 7 years.)
I don’t know about acrylic eyes. We’ve never used those.

Hi Ms. Melody! The pictures are of the dragon from before she was put in storage. Her eyes don’t look like that now 🙁 Thanks for the information regarding the types of glue! I didn’t know white glue could be so corrosive.. Would super-glue be okay? to use?

I don’t think it’s a case of the glue being corrosive at all, it’s the fact that over the years, these statues “breathe” a little bit. Tiny, tiny, tiny amounts of expanding and contracting due to the temperature and humidity. Because of the backing on these old eyes, sometimes the glue held them so rigidly in place that they couldn’t move properly, even those minuscule amounts, and so they cracked, or the color separated from the glass of the eye. To this end, superglue would be just as bad (if not worse).
Even the best glues that are flexible will become brittle over decades, so that’s why Windstone went with fired eyes instead of enameled.
