I just learned that they used to be classified as being related to raccoons but now the experts say that isn’t correct. So now they are classified as being in a family by themselves.
But the fact is that they tested positive for Felv. So ANY responsible person who adopted them would have taken them to a vet and found that out. And the odds are high they would have been euthanized, if not then probably when they got symptomatic. It is really, really sad but those kittens were doomed to have short lives. A lot of people will disagree with the decision to euthanize them now but at least the kittens didn’t suffer. Trust me when I say it isn’t easy for a vet to have to euthanize a couple of cute kittens but they do it because they know they are preventing future suffering and they are preventing spread of the disease. So Drag0n try to think about the fact that the kittens aren’t suffering and that other cats aren’t being exposed to a horrible disease.
And tell Shaun he owes you a Windstone because it is all his fault because he got you involved and he had no right to get angry at you! 😉
Then go get a jar of nutella and eat as much of it as you can! 🙂
Wait! Me too! Me too!
Last New Year’s friends and I went to a tiny zoo and they had red pandas. One of them spent 15 minutes trying to get a basketball out of a bucket. We were so impressed by his play drive and sheer determination. Well, he finally got the ball out and it turned out there were his favorite snacks at the bottom of the bucket! But we had a great time watching him so I’ve had a soft spot for red pandas since then.
Drag0n, I am so sorry that you are going through this. Of course you feel bad because you are a very caring person. I would be sick about this as well. But the truth of the matter is: YOU DID NOTHING WRONG! The lady with the kittens should have had them tested but it is possible she didn’t have the money. The people who had the kittens had multiple options. They could have waited a few weeks and had them retested. While rare it is not unheard of for kittens to test positive then test negative (but this is a long shot). They could have returned the kittens. If they had no other cats they could have let these two live until they were symptomatic and then euthanized them. Although I completely understand why they didn’t. Since there are multiple kids involved it would be really hard to have them get even more attached to the kittens and then have to say goodbye. And yes, some cats do well when Felv positive but most have a life expectancy of less than two years. (FIV positive cats do live longer). And it depends on how the Felv manifests itself but some of the cats get really sick and suffer unless the people are really good about monitoring them. We don’t know if someone in that family ever lost a cat to Felv. I had a friend who lost a cat to it and she said she could NEVER go through that again because it broke her heart. And when she adopted a kitten a few years later and he tested positive she also euthanized him immediately. So basically this was a tragic situation where people with nothing but the best of intentions went and are going through he$$. It is very kind of you to want to pay the vet bill and if it will make you feel better you should but I don’t think it is your responsibility. I know this ended badly but please don’t let this stop you from helping out other animals. THAT would be truly tragic.
See? SEE Chessie (and PS)?? – I told you that eye color was gross! :p
😀
I think violet or blue would be perfect. So I would also squeek for these guys in the store.Nam, I just want to say that you’ve made this forum a wonderful place to visit for the last 5 years and I will always have the utmost respect for how you moded this forum. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have stuck around all these years if you hadn’t been here to dispense your quirky, humorous, rational, thoughtful, fair, common sense, and high expectation responses to all the difficult and not so difficult threads. I also appreciated the fact you were so approachable. I’m not trying to guilt you into staying; change is hard, and you have to do what’s best for you and I’m assuming this is a good decision for you. But I would have been regretful if before you left I hadn’t expressed my admiration and appreciation for your contributions to this forum and I think you did an excellent job. =) I don’t know how the next mod will ever be able to live up to you. I feel sorry for them already knowing they have some pretty big shoes to fill =P
I didn’t have the words but I am glad someone did. Lokie, you expressed what i was thinking/feeling beautifully.
I wish you all the best, Jennifer. Wind to your wings….
Super cute! They have a very Zen feeling to them. I can’t wait to hold one in my hand.
I have listened to some LOUD rants about how we should NEVER give red eyes to Oriental dragons! Apparently, red eyes are a sign of evil in Eastern mythology , and the Oriental dragon is never evil.
Western dragons, sure.Personally I don’t like red eyes because they always look evil to me! But I didn’t know that was part of the Eastern mythology. I think it is great that you have respected the mythology when it comes to this issue although I suppose if I loved red eyes I would have a different opinion 😉 Probably not, though – I try very hard to respect other people’s beliefs even if (or especially if) I don’t share them.
You will be sorely missed. 🙁 Honestly I am at a loss for words…
Please, please, please a print (with frame)! Although a Christmas/holiday card would be nice too.
Thanks for posting the photo. They all look great – I am having a hard time picking a favorite. I can’t wait to see mine! I actually just got my GB foal (she was shipped to my home address and I didn’t get home until Sat) and she is completely adorable! She is a bright gold palomino with blue eyes and white markings. The gold looks metLlic and I really love the effect. So thank you for her as well. Maybe I will get lucky and get a matching big brother. Although there is something to be said for diversity. Based on the picture I am sure I will love whatever comes.
For dragons I would add green and lavender with lavender eyes. Melody did a fledling in this color and he is one of my all time favorites. I hope it isn’t considered too complicated. I honestly think that any LPs done in this color would cause a feeding frenzy.
I also vote for any true blue color.I just want to say a huge THANK YOU to Melody, Chessie, Susie, Pam and the rest of the Windstone staff for all their hard work getting two good sized batches of grab bag young unicorns done. The live stream and the updates of when we could expect them to be in the store are also greatly appreciated.
I sincerely hope that all the people who haven’t gotten a grab bag get one or two when the next batch hit the store. I have missed quite a few things over the last couple of years so I totally understand the frustration of constantly missing out on a new Windstone. So good luck all!
And thanks for the updates on when they might go into the store. I want to see The Lion King in 3D but I would hate to miss this batch when I can just go another day.
I believe that education is always a positive choice. It isn’t always easy and can be expensive but the more education you get the more options you have. But starting something new is scary under the best of circumstances and it sounds as if you are dealing with a whole lot of things. So tell yourself it is ok to be scared. It is ok to have second (or 100;) thoughts. And then just take it one day at a time. It sounds as if you are making really good decisions and are getting help for the depression and PTSD. Keep reminding yourself that things will get better and that YOU will get better. And then come to the forum any time you need to vent or just talk to friends. *big hugs*
