Whaaaaaaaa. I want both of the sky bronzes! They match my male!
I literally almost burst into tears when I saw the lap a minute ago. Other than the labradorite lap (which sold well out of my price range & well before my time), I think this one is probably my favorite color scheme for that sculpt.
Showed it to my husband who commented, “It looks like yours.”
“But this one’s blue!”
“Yours can be too, just stick her picture in Photoshop and change the colors.”
Hmph. Males. Well, at least he didn’t tell me to repaint her! LOL
January 12, 2013 at 10:44 pm in reply to: Koishii and Grayfire New Combo Sunset Moth keeper!!! Pg# 3 #891618Tidal Pool is absolutely stunning! I’m not sure how you two can bear to let him go! Terrific collaboration–kudos to you both. 🙂
All cameras hate teal & purple. Most (that produce jpeg files) are tuned towards greens, reds, and flesh tones. I swear the engineers are thinking “Landscapes, race cars, women & children” when they come up with the algorithms for what the final image should look like! LOL
LOVE the Autumn scheme. I think that might be my favorite Foo so far. Congrats on finding something to inspire you to pick up a brush again! And ten colors on that wee little tyke?! WOW
These little guys are s…l…o..w…l…y starting to grow on me. I’ll end up with a flock of them eventually, I bet!
Love love love that Sky Bronze Old Warrior! Alas, I’m Windstone broke at this point…but he’s a beauty!
Something that I find works well and really matches the texture of the gypsum is a trick I learned restoring Breyer horses. It uses super glue and baking soda. Two things that you likely have laying around.
You dab the super glue on the spot and sprinkle on the baking soda. Just build it up until it fills the area. Dab, sprinkle, dab, sprinkle, repeat. The glue dries quick and the baking soda helps give substance to the repair. Don’t worry if it overflows the area or makes a big glob. Once the spot has been filled you shape the glue/soda glob with sandpaper until it meets with your approval. Sometimes you will uncover a hole in the mixture as you shape/sand. Just re-apply the glue/soda and continue on.
You will find the glue/soda really adhears to the base material. Much better than epoxy and it is easier to find.
When you get the glue on yourself, and you will ;), it can be cleaned up with finger nail polish remover.
Once you get the shape back then touch-up and you are done.
Robin, thank you! I’m in the middle of a horn repair that took out a chunk of a uni forehead, and this technique works remarkably well. Apoxie Sculpt isn’t available in town, and driving further out wasn’t in the cards this week, so having a trick that used items on hand has been terrific.
I’ll add that once I had the shape for the most part, I did add a thin layer of dark paint to mine. This has made both the necessary sanding and the carving of individual hair lines easier for me to see. (It does help that I’m working on a black uni, so the dark paint isn’t an issue!) For small repairs especially, this is definitely one way to go.
January 9, 2013 at 2:00 am in reply to: 12/26/12 Batch of Grab Bag Young Poads picture thread! #891442Joliesdragons, I think it’s wonderful how you were able to “catch” this beautiful little Monarch Poad! It’s always a rare pleasure being able to have a Windstone that brings you back to a time in your life that is full of heartwarming memories and joy. 🙂 (A Windstone like that doesn’t come around often! They certainly make up some of the best treasures in life!)
*hugs*
Thanks, Puff. I do think that’s the one plus to having to keep your collection small–if it doesn’t speak to me in some way, then why get it? (Which isn’t to say I don’t want them all anyway! *hee hee*) But this one really does make me smile.
I would swear that gorgeous “rainforest” one you got *is* based on a real bird. Variant of a yellow lorikeet maybe? Part sun conure? (except for the top of the head, this seems to be closest I can find at the moment). There’s a lot of these, including mine, where I’d love to know the background inspiration!
January 8, 2013 at 11:58 pm in reply to: 12/26/12 Batch of Grab Bag Young Poads picture thread! #891423I’ve been feeling too sick to do a full setup of pics for my ultimate new WS family member from this batch. Thankfully, she had a complete modeling session at her first stop (Thanks, L!), and I can show you a few from that. She’s another one that was really easy to miss in the class picture (and even the FB shots), being well hidden by her sibling poads! She’s the Monarch-type butterfly wing in the center of the circle at about 9 o’clock.
Meet Mariposa, Mignonne’s new sister:
(indoors)
(outside)
Family shot, indoors, just as they sit on the desk:
…Mariposa in front, Mignonne (GBP 2/2012) just behind (keeping her new sister away from HER dragons), Dusk (Black Peocock Poad) to the right. (And of course, Allestra & her brother are right behind them, as always. LOL)
As with all from this bunch, pictures really only convey part of the shading, or how striking her coloration is. The purple & blue on her face are really vibrant, she has those darling lovebird cheeks, and there are so many blended shades of orange and gold on her wings. It all contrasts perfectly with the black on her body–everything stands out so much more than if there was another color there.
Though I still adore and miss the red autumn leaf poad I posted earlier, and as beautiful as so many of the others are, this one will hold a special place in my heart. I grew up where Monarchs are very common, and moved to where we hardly see them at all. So for me, she’s a joyous bit of childhood and a stunning work of art, complete with a silly face and light blue metallic eyes. I love that her colors blend so well with everyone else on the desk too!
January 8, 2013 at 5:28 am in reply to: 12/26/12 Batch of Grab Bag Young Poads picture thread! #891395I am so glad there are those that love her! She really is pretty =) hopefully she will find a loving home soon
It never ceases to amaze me, but I’m starting to think that for every GB, there’s a “right” home. Yes, there are some that almost everyone oohs & ahhs over. But it doesn’t matter how wild Melody’s imagination gets with these little ones, someone, somewhere, will pick a baby from the crowd who is absolutely, incontrovertibly THE one.
Sometimes it’s not the one you think it will be. And sometimes they just have to make a stop or two to visit other friends here and there first! 🙂
*tries to grab Maltese #4 through the screen*
Gosh darn it, I *had* managed to forget about how much I loved your Malteses! 😉 Gorgeous, just as stunning as the others.
Hope 2013 is a better year for you all around. *hugs*
Jeepers, it’s been a while! I actually finished this dragon back in 2010 (good grief!) but due to various life-related aggravations never posted any photos. But today I was snapping a few pictures and decided “what the hey.” This is N’Twe.
…[snipped]…
He was a challenge. When I finished his inital basecoating and layering, I looked at him and realized I’d just painted him to look like a poo. Frustrated, I dubbed him “Turd With Eyes” and put him away. Ten months later, I realized what the dragon wanted to look like was not what I had been trying to make him. I pulled him out and finished the paintjob. Now he needed a new name, so: N’Twe, which stands for “Not a Turd With Eyes.” 🙂
LMAO!!!
Oh, man, now my stomach hurts from laughing too hard. I know EXACTLY how this feels!
Whatever he started out like, his coloration now is gorgeous; some of the richest looking color I’ve seen on a PYO, I think. Definitely no longer a “Turd with Eyes”!
January 5, 2013 at 10:22 pm in reply to: 12/26/12 Batch of Grab Bag Young Poads picture thread! #891244You did great, Barrdwing. What a gorgeous poad you got…and I adore the matching fuzzy!
The Little Rock Dragons are flying out of the store, even at $800 each. Maybe this is drawing some money away from ebay sales?
Or….the same crazy little rock lady has been buying them…. 😉
I read this at work and I bursted out laughing at my desk!
Technically I think we all qualify as crazy rock ladies (and gentlemen). LOL!
I see at least two factors at work, maybe a couple more. One is color scheme–some schemes have wider appeal than others, so getting a bidding war going is easier and raises the prices. Two is the holidays/economy–I don’t know about all of you, but post Christmas, I *really* shouldn’t be spending on Windstones (Not that it’s stopping me, but…)
Others might be:
* Melody’s signature versus anyone else’s. Hers is just plain worth more to some people.
* Grab bag insanity. Honestly, I love them all, I want them all–but $350 for a baby uni? I can’t stomach that personally…I have Ebay pieces & very limited LPs that are worth that. But that’s just me; it’s a matter of supply & demand–people are paying what something is worth to them, and apparently the right GB uni is worth that kind of money to enough people that the most coveted colors/patterns are selling for those prices. (The first batch unis and poads though generally seem to go for more reasonable prices.) It’s not hard to see though that unless you’re made of money, buying up lots of GBs means spending less on ebay pieces. There was a point last summer where it seemed like a number of ebay pieces went for very low amounts, and at that point, I suspected it was mostly the color schemes involved, because the comments on them here weren’t as favorable. Things seemed to pick up again within a few weeks as new color combos were released. Small sample size and all that, but it did seem like a possible factor.
January 4, 2013 at 5:06 am in reply to: 12/26/12 Batch of Grab Bag Young Poads picture thread! #891044Got this Poad in the mail today from someone who had buyer’s remorse 🙁 I don’t get it, she’s gorgeous! Anyway, she’s just here for an overnight stay and then she’s moving on to her new home, but I figured I would share the images I took of her 🙂
I swear, we should come up with a GB “passport” template we could print out for all the trades we end up doing. A little GB mugshot, description, and then have a few pages where we could note each new place the GB traveled to, short or long term–sent along to the next owner with the GB. Some of these guys have more frequent flyer miles accrued than a lot of us humans!
Heck, I have a few secondhand non GB pieces I’d love to know more about–doesn’t have to be who had them, just where they’ve been.
*tries to remember these are inanimate objects, while still calculating mileage on that last three way trade*
All the “bat wings” I’ve seen have been gorgeous. I’m usually more of a butterfly girl, but these have all been so pretty, they’re winning me over.
January 4, 2013 at 3:12 am in reply to: 12/26/12 Batch of Grab Bag Young Poads picture thread! #891036….more…poads! …need more poads….
Hubby thinks they all look the same, he’ll never notice if I scatter them around and not all together (he still hasn’t figured out the extra flap cat, I should be safe, right?!)
*starts looking in the couch again for spare change*
Everyone’s are so pretty. I really do want them all!
January 3, 2013 at 6:47 pm in reply to: 12/26/12 Batch of Grab Bag Young Poads picture thread! #890971Hannah,She fabulous!please don’t trade yet. Please??Wait until this Friday. Please??
And of course Hannah….I could not have gotten one any more different than what you wanted than if I would have picked it myself. 😀 😀
LOL–been there. But oh, super jealous. I love that one; it was the first one I noticed in the class photo.
