I would definitely not let kids have it as a toy; Windstones may be heavy, but they are made of a pretty fragile material (gypsum) and could be broken by rough play – especially one that’s chipped already, which could make it easier to fracture. And they’re not really waterproof, either, so if the kids play with it in water/leave it outside/got it wet in any other way, the paint could start peeling and the gypsum could get soggy and crumble.
I’m glad that it managed to find a good home! I see that I’m too late to the thread, or I would’ve offered to adopt it myself. 😀

My first thought was stick-it-on poster-putty type stuff, too; or else the similar stuff that museums/Breyer horse collectors use to hold fragile items on shelves — surely it’d be sticky enough to hold down a pebble during airbrushing? And it’s designed not to leave marks, so you shouldn’t have the same issue that a suction cup creates. (You might need a big blog of it to hold the pebble upside down, since that surface isn’t flattened!)
Anyway, am I the only one squeeing about the prospect of black pebble cats rather than foxes? 😀 I really, really wanted a black sparkle pebble ladycat, but didn’t manage to grab one before they sold out; if there are more in the works I’d do leaps of joy! (If you didn’t mean black sparkle, well, even a solid glossy black would be right up there on my want list!)
Good luck to you and all the factory staff as you try to wrangle the foxes into cooperating! No more going down their little foxy boltholes to get away from the paint, hopefully.

Check out the My Little Pony Trading Post! They’ve been around a long time and I’ve bought ponies from sellers there before — lots of knowledgeable, loving collectors there!

Oh, awesome!!
One of my favorite cats where I work was a blue-cream torti point, but she leaned so heavily toward the blue that you had to look for the cream; so I mostly think of her as a blue point. 😀 I’d love a flapcat one day that looks like her, so what a great thing to look forward to!

I’m the Lap Dragon — lazy, well-fed, and happy to be surrounded by smaller creatures that would normally be prey (cats, snakes, fish, dogs…) but instead we share the comfy spots and the snacks!

August 19, 2014 at 1:32 am in reply to: Seriously considering PYO…EDIT- OK, Im diving in ! Got my PYO sculpts ! #917658Ceramics are a great way to practice! I actually started painting as a kid by taking ceramics classes, and it’s a really handy way to learn about different paint types, brushes, and the way ceramics are made! Acrylics, glazes, paints for greenware that can be fired… blending paints… brush shapes and effects (drybrushing, broad brushes, slim brushes, shaped brushes)… the basic tricks for creating depth or a lifelike appearance on different textures — you can practice all that on ceramic pieces for much less than a PYO.
It’s given me a lot of knowledge that I don’t even have to really think about at the age I am now; I can just intuit that I need to drybrush *this* bit to make it look like *that*, and use a wash to give depth to the fine texture, or hey, I think this isn’t working because my brush shape is wrong – what if I tried a slanted brush instead of a flat?
I bet you’ll have tons of fun in addition to building skills that will serve you well with PYO projects!

Best of luck, whatever you decide!
Honestly, I think student-grade materials would work just fine; most of the acrylic paints I use on my PYO pieces are NOT expensive! ($0.85 – $1.50 range, so very cheap!) So far they’ve worked great. Haven’t had any bad reactions with the more expensive paints, or with mixing with other cheap brands. I did find that one cheap brand was much runnier than I was used to, but that just took a bit of practice to deal with; the paint itself was fine once I figured out I should use more layers to build up the color.
I suspect that cheap paint + good expensive sealer would be enough to preserve your piece for many many years. 😀 (Which reminds me, I need to go buy some matte sealer; I only have satin and gloss, and that won’t work for my winged wolf!)
If you do try the markers, I’d try them on the bottom of the piece, where they can be covered by the felt if needed. I’d worry that the alcohol or acid in the ink would mess up any paint put on top of it, either keeping it from sticking or altering the color over time… but I can’t be sure since I’ve never tried it.

I just want a shorthair PYO flapcat.
…And maybe an Oriental-type shorthair PYO flapcat? 😀

Yes, I did notice, and I think that’s partly why I like them — I find the original color scheme very attractive! (I own all three in the original color, so obviously I like it!)
At the same time, though, it’s not a straight-up inversion; its warm tones are lighter and more varied, so it’s complementary without being too “match-y”!

I’m no expert, but I’d definitely start with canned air. That way you can get anything that’s still loose to come off *before* it has a chance to abrade the finish with wiping/rubbing! Once you’ve got an idea how much grime is firmly attached, you can go from there. Anything from light strokes with a damp soft cloth to a gentle sink rinsing might be needed, depending on how much gunk is still on him after the air and how stuck it seems to be!

I don’t collect Poads, but I really, really love that “Winter” color!! *immediately dreams of Winter Lap Dragons* Any chance it might appear on a dragon at some point? 😀
Oooh, I bet a Winter hatching kinglet would be THE MOST ADORABLE baby ever! Possibly with a pale-blue egg like the new White Hatchers have?

I always hate to add to Susie’s workload, but I’ll run it by her! I’d happily pay for shipping if needed; it’s my own silly fault that I put the original felt somewhere hard to find!
Thanks for the advice!
I would email Susie – for a PYO, she would probably mail you another one. 🙂

That’s both good to know (I did wonder, later, whether aluminum would really take to plating as easily as I first assumed!) and awesome to hear (I’ve got Christmas money burning a hole in my pocket, and I’ve been dreaming of Lap Dragons)!
Thanks for keeping us all updated!

Does anyone know if the Ravnheart database is still updated? I tried to look up a couple of Lap Dragons, and noticed that all the data was from 2008-2009; surely Laps haven’t been out of production for that long?
