The on-going horn shortage…

I was just curious, if there is a shortage of the plated horns, what about the kyrin horns? If they are gold plated and you guys can no longer get them, does that mean that eventually thy will be gone? Will you have to do PYO horns on the kyrin pyo’s too?

This is a question for Pam, she is the one who knows what horns we have.
I do know that we still have quite a few female, pyo and baby kirin horns left, but no male kirin horns.
We also have a good supply of Gothic unicorn and baby unicorn horns.
Everything else is being rationed.
Eventually we will run out of all of them, yes.

I don’t think the problem is just the plating – I believe they don’t have an abundance of unplated horns either and no way to make more at this time.

I have high hopes for male blue eyed albino kirins! And I wouldn’t mind a mother coiled and a grand unicorn too. I don’t have any of those in my collection yet and would love to add them =)

Took the words right out of my mouth. I assume unplated means they could be done in any acrylic color available. That would be nice. Silver or dark shiny black horns/ colored eggs would be interesting to see. ( I do like gold, but it’s definitely not my favorite color)

??? I don’t have any hatching pegasi, but I thought the wings were part of the sculpture (gypsum) not painted pewter???

The wing on that sculpture is pewter. Hence those nifty gaps between the feather shafts. 🙂

I hope this means more gothic unicorns in our future! 😀 I’m curious if the unplated horns/eggs could be painted to be really pretty instead of being plated. I’m imagining some really pretty white glossy horns, for example. Like a narwhale!

That sounds promising for some Albino Male Ki-Rins (Blue eyes, please) which are my main squeak from this list. With Mother Coiled Dragons (in a colour not already done – BVP perhaps?) coming in at a screechingly close second.

Can someone please explain why the horn problem hasn’t been corrected….. Are there no companies that will do the plateing? What happened to the company that was doing it?

I’ve never has a clear understanding of what happen with the horns, if anyone can help.

The way I understand it is:
They where having problems with quality from the old company so stopped using them. The new company uses different molds so the old ones can’t be used. However the can’t find the masters to make new molds. They can’t simply use cast horns to make molds because pewter shrinks alot so the molds have to be oversize.

Soloutions:
-Find masters (crosses fingers)
-Melody sculpt new ones (last resort)
-Find a feasible way to make masters from cast horns? (3d printing is the only way I can think of to enlarge them but I don’t know feasiblity)
