He looks really good in Tanzanite! The color really plays up the blueish depths of the spectral eye.

Wow, he’s absolutely stunning! Is that one of the “Copper Gold” test paints from a few years ago? He’s so lovely.

Thanks for posting the update!
I have a couple of pieces who need small repairs, but March is going to be a month with a lot of expenses so April might be perfect. I’ll keep an eye on this thread!

Susie is super awesome! She has had to deal with me losing PYO parts, or being indecisive about colors, way too often, and is always helpful above and beyond the call of duty! π

Continuing to finish old projects!
This one I’ve been calling “Copper Plum,” and he’s… different! Unlike my other pieces, I had no plan when I bought this dragon, so I made it up as I went along. He is my fanciest PYO ever, featuring 17 Swarovski crystals in total and incredible amounts of detailing! His large scales are textured round the edges with copper sparkles, and he features special glitter and interference colors just about everywhere.

This one had a casting date on the bottom, too; it was 5/30/14. I’m moving on through the backlog!
(If anyone’s interested, Copper Plum may be for sale.)

Oh, that Winter Storm Spectral is so pretty, Skylover! I love the other Winter Storm pieces, but I hadn’t remembered there was a Spectral, too. The subtle patterns are especially nice with the Spectral eyes, I think!

What a cool Riser, etruscan!
I know I have seen at least one other Spectral with normal eyes (might have been a matched set, might have been just one) because I really loved the way they looked and was disappointed to find it out it’s not feasible as a production option. (The Spectral’s eye sockets are deeper, and had to be built-up after casting until they were shallow enough to insert regular eyes, apparently. Doubt they could do that for production pieces, but it looked super-cool!)
I want to say it was a (prototype?) White spectral or spectrals, because I’m pretty certain that the eyes involved were yellow and I tend to pay more attention when White dragons are involved, π but more likely it was a test paint. Maybe it’ll ring a bell for someone else?

I don’t prime them, and I don’t really wash them either unless they feel particularly dusty or gritty.
My paints are every brand under the sun, from (one single solitary bottle of) Golden to Liquitex (I like that they sell big tubes, and have several of those for the most basic colors I use all the time, like white, black, blue) to whatever-was-on-clearance-at-Michaels. π
Most of my PYO painting is done with very small brushes! The widest one I’ve ever used was maybe a quarter-inch across, and it’s just for laying on big swaths of a single color for pieces that call for it (e.g. the fur of my black PYO wolf).
I also use Pearl-Ex powders, either dry-brushed on over paint or mixed into clear varnish, on various pieces, especially for interference color or metallics. Metallic paint can look like silver-flecks-in-a-colored-base (especially cheap brands) and adding the Pearl-Ex enriches the metallic hues, as well as allowing me to layer and mix them more subtly. Dry-brushed Pearl-Ex has a ‘dustier’ look; varnished Pearl-Ex has a deep, almost ‘wet,’ sheen. It’s a great way to mimic the natural iridescence of things like feathers, but it can take some experimentation to get it to cooperate.

February 18, 2019 at 8:01 pm in reply to: What are your squeaks? Tell Melody here!! (part 2) #1557904Gotta write down my Oriental squeaks before I forget!
1. Another GB batch of Sitting Orientals, with the same color categories! (Or make a ‘Dark/Seminatural’ category for the people who loved the mahogany-and-forest-green one? As long as there are “Cool” ones, the other categories are flexible.)
2. I would actually really love if there was a batch of GB Sitting Orientals in black/silverkoi or black/silver/blue koi. Those were the only koi ones I liked, so I didn’t want to risk getting one of the warm-colored ones by taking a chance on the koi GB; but if they were their own batch I’d be so tempted!
3. …Could we maybe have Young Orientals as a GB in matching colors one day?? I’d be beyond thrilled to have a Young that looked like my GB Sitting Ori, and hopefully the Young would be a little less expensive, or at least not more expensive. π
4. I’m still yearning for Moon Orientals, if you can ever get that pesky seam to cooperate, Melody! <3
5. Hatching Oriental sculpt?? With a snakey-type egg??

Thank you!
Pipsxlch, that was my general intention – I wanted something that would complement my White collection, without being a direct copy. Glad that it worked! I put them on the same shelf with the Spectrals so they could all be not-quite-White oddballs together. π
Landipan, thank you! That’s a cool comparison that I hadn’t thought of before. They kinda do look like those designer sinks in various marble colors with sparkly veins… Maybe they should be displayed in the bathroom? π

February 18, 2019 at 7:21 pm in reply to: Grab Bag Young Sitting Oriental Dragon Showoff Thread #1557902Woooooow, whiskerhunterwest, that is a gorgeous Oriental!! π
He looks especially stunning next to the Blue Morpho Young Dragon; now I’m wondering if I should try to add a Blue Morpho Oriental to my Ori family…
I like the teal nose, too – but then, I’m very much not a pink person. π A black nose would’ve been cute, too.

More pictures of the Gold Koi Keeper:
He was painted in acrylics and sealed, then antiqued with another coat of sealant mixed with interference gold to create an antiquing effect.
His dangly treasure is made from two stray earrings I had lying around for some reason; one had four smaller multicolored drops on it, and all I did was remove the purple one. Later I found the second earring, which had the large drop in a coordinating color, and I added it to to the chain of smaller drops.
Here he is with the Gold Koi PYO and some friends:
One project down! Many more to go. π
