Little basic tips for painting…
Use good quality paint on them – sometimes the really cheap stuff won’t even really stick to the gypsum. Oil paints are about the only type of paint that isn’t recommended for them; it doesn’t “breathe” with the gypsum iirc.
Varnishing before antiquing works well since it’s pretty easy to rub the bottom layer of paint off the edge of the scales.
The first mock-up is really nice; I like the soft pastel look of it.
A small little project is in the works.
Fixing up this little paper mache box to look like a cake. White and pastel/rainbow colors are a bit of a weak spot for me. Waiting on some artificial strawberries to arrive before continuing. Also need to look into getting some fake whipped topping from somewhere.
The colors remind me a bit of old school Green Goblin. Good luck to those who enter!
110+ backers within the first 10 minutes… That is one big flood of messages with claims. RIP
Thank you!
Ansel, the small critters were made by DemiurgasDreams over on Etsy. They have a lot of small PYO figures.
One more little critter finished.
Another pearl/white unicorn… I really like painting them that color for some reason…
It has uv-reactive glitter on it, but the weather has been bad lately so no outside photo to show it off.
The rhinestones are a bit big for it, but all the craft stores are closed so I used what I had.
The horn also got foiled a little with some leftover scraps.I have a question… if I wanted a dragon with a similar color to what was shown, but with a different detail color, would that be possible?
Would there be a possibility to have something like your sushi cats artwork?
Finished a little galaxy fox today! The camera didn’t pick up the galaxy along its back but that’s nothing new by now.
Tried out the galaxy varnish on it and it gives a nice sparkle. I still think the glitter varnish I can make on my own is a little better overall due to how much glitter I have, but if you rather just work with pre-made stuff the varnish will work out well.
It has a little (plastic) rhinestone moon on its forehead and I didn’t forget about the glitter to identify which family it’s in.
The large spots also glow in the dark (still don’t like dealing with that GITD stuff… far too gritty for my taste).A little bit of progress has been made.
Getting a smooth black surface has been difficult so I’ve been sanding down problem areas. Since it’s been taking longer than expected I’ve decided to make the black part more of a coat or jacket and leave the belly as-is (the belly also has the foil on it, it’s just too reflective to properly photograph).
The center of the sakura flowers will get some 3D paint and the dragon will hold either a pearl of 3D paint or a gemstone in its hand, depending on which works the best.Thank you both. 🙂 It’s nail transfer foil and I bought a pack of it from ebay for really cheap.
Well, I finally got around to trying to foil a sushi cat and…..
Like any cat, this one refused to photograph properly. There’s a lot of holographic spots that the camera just refused to focus on.
Looks kind of like shattered glass, though I was really hoping for more of a solid foil, like a decoupage (I think that’s the word I’m looking for…).
Since it didn’t come out quite as envisioned I might do a reverse silhouette sort of thing.I found some new (at least new to me) varnishes at Hobby Lobby the other day. They’re called Irridescent Varnish and Galaxy Varnish.
Irridescent varnish comes in violet and turquoise. Galaxy varnish has different sizes of holographic or silver glitter in it; can’t tell exact color through the bottle. They’re $10 for 8 fl oz so not too bad, especially if you use a coupon.Just in case anybody was interested in trying out something new and sparkly on their art pieces.
Thanks. He’ll get done slowly but surely.
Also the edit I made to the post didn’t save so i’ll put it here – the camera picked up more red than black on the mouth so the blending isn’t showing up well.
