I agree drag0n – it sounds a little weird to say but the ‘battle scars’ seem to help indicate a piece’s age, haha. Some things wouldn’t be easy for me to fix, and I wouldn’t want to go to the lengths of covering over the crazed gold accents or replacing her one ‘bad’ eye. Gives her character! I do think there is such a thing as over-restoring. Maybe I get that from watching too much Antiques Roadshow and see people get chided for refinishing furniture…

Well, it is possible someone who worked for us at the time did that. We weren’t super strict about what painters did to dragons they wanted to have for themselves, but I don’t think we had any ruby colored Swarovski jewels around then, and the size is bigger than our usual jewels. If it is is only on one side, it is more likely a previous owner did that. This dragon needs some tlc!

Thanks Melody, that’s what I thought at first but I figured it never hurts to check. The extra jewel is only on one side. The poor girl came to me in even worse shape, but I’ve sculpted back in her missing chips and starting putting down some paint. I’m trying to plan out how to patch up her missing or damaged gold accents without covering over the original crazed gold, I think it looks quite pretty on her! Thanks again 🙂

Haven’t (yet!) had a Siamese cat in my life, but maybe someday! Their facial shading makes them look very dignified, and the ones with blue eyes are even more so. I hear they’re talkers too. My ‘mutt’ cat has enough Maine Coon in her to chirp and make all kinds of other funny vocalizations, and she isn’t shy about expecting me to know exactly what they all mean 🙂 Usually, it’s food related, haha.

Had too hard of a time disciplining myself to sit this one out… so here’s my little lady 😀

She’s a Siamese at the front, bright silver with a darker gray dusting on her face, ears, and paws. Her back shades to yellow-green, with fan-shaped trees with accents painted in translucent blue, purple, green, and yellow-green. Lots of little birds too! She’s charming but unfortunately not my style, so I’ll be putting her up for trade or sale…

As always, thank you Melody! It’s wonderful seeing others post their cats, and getting to hold my own little treasure and admire all of her details.

Congrats to you Betrluk1! My husband and I are also under contract for our first home, we’re hoping everything goes smoothly and are probably experiencing a lot of what you are right now, haha. I’d second the advice about understanding the condo rules backwards and forwards – the same thing extends to pretty much all of the mountain of paperwork that will be placed in front of you! It’s been a challenge to read through *everything* when people are asking for signatures ASAP, but there’s so much at stake that I’ve wanted to make sure I understand everything and ask questions to help cut through all of the jargon.

Sending you good vibes, I hope you’ll nab a place you love!

Thanks Zelda, maybe this will help…

Thanks for the close up shot! I’ll actually take back my earlier guesses, this doesn’t look like any of them. Etruscan has another good guess with rhodonite, but rhodonite often has dark-colored inclusions mixed in. With those little round ‘bubble’ looking shapes, I’m guessing this is a pink chalcedony (aka agate). The bubble shapes are botryoidal crystal forms that have been polished down, so you’re seeing them in round cross-section. Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline quartz which naturally occurs in many colors and is often translucent if it’s thin enough. If you shine a light behind your stone and can see it coming through along the edges, that would help confirm it.

Angelika_Zen – good question… at first glance it looks like rose quartz to me, although those pink shades also show up in a type of jasper called mookaite, or it could be a pink feldspar. The pictures are a little out of focus when it comes to the stone, but a close-up would help if you could take one. Any other rockhounds want to weigh in?

I agree with Stormbreeze, that red and black koi is so vibrant. Congrats Scathach!

    in reply to: A coil-estion, hehee… #1531313

Thanks for your answer Melody! Makes sense that the sizes of some of the globes would be a little off and too big for the coiled mama. Ever tempted to do your own lapidary work with rocks you’ve found in your travels? They do make a lapidary machine for polishing spheres, but even with a machine it’s a complex process. They must have a trick for producing smaller ones in bulk.

Glad to hear you find little gems worth keeping for yourself in among the pile too! You’ve got far more discipline than I do to set aside just one 🙂

Gorgeous dragon, Mary! What a lucky grab 🙂 I agree with Natasha that tiger iron is the stone yours is cradling – nice match!

My two kois are here! I was going to get one of each batch, but chickened out thinking that I might like the kois better. Unfortunately my photos wash the orange out of them, but here’s hoping you all enjoy!

Very subtle blue shading in with the gray matches her lapis lazuli stone really nicely. And she’s got metallic silver eyes and a royal blue gem.

A tiger-eye stone sphere, metallic straw-colored eyes, and a citrine jewel. She’s a little more orange than the photo depicts, and has black spots going from head to tail.

They’re both lovely, but I would consider trading. I’ve been particularly fond of the ‘snake’ type patterns between both the koi and autumn leaf batches.

Thank you Melody! These are my first pieces in this sculpt, and I’m charmed 🙂

One of my favorite things from the curlie grab bag was trying to ID the stone spheres! A lot of them look to be agates and jaspers; I love the banding.

Natasha: your koi’s sphere looks like tiger iron. If some of those bands are metallic in appearance, that’s it!
Phantomess: your koi’s is dalmatian jasper!
Linda: your autumn leaf’s sphere may be peach aventurine… tough to say.

Looking forward to seeing more pics! Close-ups of your dragons’ spheres will help with mineral ID, if you’re curious about it 🙂

in reply to: Found in a thrift store…. #1530310

What luck! I’ve never had the good fortune to snag a Windstone from a thrift store, but I did once get an old green male for a song at an estate auction, in a box with a bunch of other knick knacks nobody saw any value in. He needed just a little touch-up here and there, phew!

I do wonder how often rare things come into thrift stores. Surely some savvy employees are looking for things to snag for themselves as soon as they come in, but nobody can know about all of the potential treasures. My favorite stories on Antiques Roadshow are like that – bought it at a garage sale or found it on the side of the road, haha. Maybe someday I’ll find pirate’s gold in an old dresser drawer, hehee.

Congrats to you on the find, and what timing!

in reply to: What's your grail piece(s)? #1530123

Grail pieces! Since I can’t keep up with Ebay auctions, I avoid a lot of temptation that way, haha!

I do love Jennifer Miller’s pieces – particularly the Forest and Flame-point Tabby males, her labradorite and sunstone pieces, and her PYOs including the Mandarin and Shimmer griffins, and many of her dragons. I’m super lucky to own her Zebra male unicorn!

The most drool-inducing Ebay pieces for me are the test paint little rock dragons, particularly the autumn leaf ones. Also hunting for an adult rock dragon…

Aside from that, I’ll always be looking for the chance to give a home to Blackwatch, an old raffle OW piece, and a GB baby uni that I traded away and miss dearly! But if they’re in happy homes at the moment, that’s also a good thing.

Oh wow, the clown butter Emperor is lovely! I’m a bit biased by having a ball python myself, but I love the snake-inspired color schemes in general. So many to choose from, even without the option of going into fantasy colors 🙂
