As a working artist in the entertainment industry, I know how frustrating it can be to produce art and then helplessly watch as a company makes millions off of your designs when you were paid pennies.
Oh man, tell it sister. I work in VFX, converting footage to 3D.
I do insanely complex and tedious work.
I get paid the industry’s BARE minimum wage.
I have no union, and no cap on how much overtime they can force me to work.
I don’t even get my name in the movie credits. Despite how much work goes into what I do, or the fact that it drives higher profits for the studios to do a 3D release, it’s not considered as important as say, “third assistant to the breakfast caterer”. Our studio might get its logo at the end of the credit crawl, after the Dolby logo. Maybe a handful of supervisors or the CEO mentioned. That’s it.
I worked for months, for peanuts on Transformers 3, then watched it become one of the highest-grossing films of the past 10 years. That’s just one movie of many I’ve worked on, with similar results. Our studio gets none of the profits.
Seriously, I get it because I live it.

I’m one of those who emailed Susie about the possibility of any extra’s becoming available. After thinking on it, I decided the risk was worth the price, since this set has so many gorgeous pieces in it. I’m not good with making spontaneous decisions regarding lots of money! So I slept on it, and the uni’s were all sold by morning, which I expected. I am happy either way it goes- if I get one I’ll be on pins and needles, hoping for a Safari and my bank account will be crying, if not, I save myself spending a bunch of money! So, win-win. 🙂 Regardless, I really hope lots of people post photos as they arrive!
I hope it doesnt’ hurt Melody’s feelings to hear all the debate on prices! If I comment on prices, its more about my own personal ability to pay, not about the worth of the piece! I’m always happy when the profit of the artwork goes to the artist themself and not the second-hand seller. I had budgetted up to $300 as well so I’m hesitating with these guys even tho each one of them is amazing. I know dragonlove wanted one and I had told her I’d reserve one but now that I tried to reserve one, I’m not sure how without actually placing an order and paying for it. Does anyone know the proper way to reserve an item? Sorry for the dumb question. >_<
oh man, every one of the safari’s is gorgeous!!! Really hope I can catch one of them when they are released! Melody is doing AMAZING work!!! 😀

Sikek- the uni next to the liger gothic is called “Ocean Tiger,” by Patricia Smith. I think he looks nice next to the Liger, they are stripey brothers!

I wanted to post some photos, I just got done with a big move so unfortunately most of my collectin is still boxed up, and probably will stay boxed for a while yet, until I move again (the place I’m at is temporary). But I can show you all the product of my recent craziness! I went a lil crazy and won some of the recent gothic uni’s from ebay! I’ve dreamed of collecting these guys since the batches that were auctioned years ago. Back then I was in dire times and couldn’t bid… so when these guys showed up I was SO excited. I spent more than I should have, but they are worth every penny to me. I have them set up at my desk at work, they get tons of compliments and conversation-starters, since they stare down anyone who wants to come talk to me. 😉
Thank you for posting these links! I’ve suffered major depression before combined with PTSD and it took many years to finally conquor. My worst bout lasted about 4 years, in many ways I’m still recovering but thankfully I’ve gotten A LOT better since those darkest days. Have had a few suicides and suicide attempts in my family too, including losing my beloved Mother, the most kind and compassionate person I have ever known. There are SO many misconceptions about depression, ptsd, suicide. So much stigma.
The lecture is really good, I learned a lot and will probably watch it a few more times. When I was watching it at work, a coworker came by and he recognized the professor from a different talk about schizophrenia, so sounds like he’s got quite a few quality lecture recordings I’ll be perusing.
These unis are all so lovely! Looking forward to their debut, I hope I can get one! Its so fun to see progress videos of them! 😀
Wow, those golden sunset dragons are astounding! I really love the lighter color variations on them. I just spent a small fortune on the latest gothic uni’s or I’d be trying for them for sure!
A lp batch of kingfisher griffins would be amazing!!! The white patches would be a lovely addition to the color scheme, too.
I hope this means more gothic unicorns in our future! 😀 I’m curious if the unplated horns/eggs could be painted to be really pretty instead of being plated. I’m imagining some really pretty white glossy horns, for example. Like a narwhale!
