This isn’t a Ruby Male Dragon…..
And has there ever been yellow or straw color eyes in prodution pieces??? I can’t think of any at the moment!
That is a White male dragon, repainted. There used to be a note on Astralcastle’s Encyclopedia about them, way back before the Ruby color came out — some company or person got desperate enough for red to paint some Whites up with red bodies, and people confused them for genuine Windstone releases.

Quote:Haha, every time I try to count them, I screw up in a different way! (The curse of having most of your collection in another state…) But let’s see:
Dragons: 10 White, 3 Peacock, 2 BVP, 1 Emerald, 1 Ruby, 1 Rainbow. Total: 18
Griffins: 2 Sunset, 1 Wolf, 1 Brown. Total: 4
Other: 1 Kirin, 1 Gothic Uni, 1 Mouse Wizard. Total: 3Grand Total: 24
Plus a handful of PYOs in various states of “finished” (3 griffins, 1 wolf, and 1 dragon) and 1 finished PYO unicorn by another artist (Fauxbird, she’s your work, and she’s absolutely lovely! One day when I have the funds I’m going to ping you about commissioning a Kirin or Griffin to match her…)How long have you been collecting?
Since about 10th grade (age 14, for non-Americans). I saw a White dragon family in the local “Glass Menagerie” shop and knew then that I HAD to have them! My friend Laura had the kirin family and a wizard, but aside from thinking the Kirins were really neat, Windstone hadn’t really made an impression on me till I saw those White dragons — it was the gold eyes that really drew me, I think, because so many (read: every) white dragon portrayals had blue eyes; very boring and unattractive. The gold made them look real, and fierce, like hawks, or snakes. What is your favorite piece in your collection?
Ummm… this one’s kind of a tie between several pieces.1. Black Violet Peacock Old Warrior #13 (Prototype) — the most expensive by far! I was outbid on #10 and feared I’d never get one after that; and also a bit afraid I’d end up with a number I didn’t like — trivial, compared to actually having the dragon, but still, 10 [is] my favorite number. Instead I went on and won the13th, which is my second-favorite number… AND Melody “customized” him by adding “This one is GOOD luck!” on the felt, which makes him extra-special to me! I’m in love with the color scheme, so combined with the other factors, plus his being my first Prototype, he’s definitely among my all-time favorites.
2. White Old Warrior — for one of the only times in my life, procrastination didn’t screw me over! I waited a long time to get this guy, while he sat in the store and seemed perfectly safe. Finally I bought him… and a few weeks later there was a notice saying there would be no more. I beat the cutoff! 🙂 He’s so majestic, and the White color was my first love as well as the bulk of my collection, so he’s very much a focal point.
3. Male KiRin — I’ve been fascinated by the Kirins since my friend showed me hers; they were so outlandishly fantastical, and so beautifully real-looking! I scooped this guy up on Ebay with a fantastic buy-it-now price (shipping and all, he was under $75), either right before or right after they retired. In addition to making my dorm room a lot classier and geekier, 🙂 he also made a great bookend for my non-textbook shelf!
I
4. Peacock Oriental — I went into “The Tinder Box” to have them order another White dragon for me, and this guy was sitting on the shelf near where I was waiting. The Peacock color that had never excited me on the dragons was suddenly amazing — I walked out of the store with a White dragon on order and an Oriental in my arms! The riot of colors just felt right on the Orientals the way it never had on the Western dragons (well, they didn’t even have any of that reddish-copper shading, so they weren’t as bright). I didn’t get the other two until years later, because by the time I had the idea (and the money) to look, they’d been retired and were hard to find. Still, this guy did a fine job of brightening my collection and my room all by himself for the years it took me to find him some company!Anything really special you want but do not have yet?
Oh, yeah — I desperately need a White Rising Spectral dragon! And one day I’m going to track down a White Secret Keeper; but that’ll have to wait till I’m a millionaire. 😀 (I’d also love a BVP Emperor, as long as he looks like the OW version and not the Lap version — I’m not a fan of the lime-green in BVPs.)I also really want an old Stripy Brown male griffin, in spite of his blue eyes. 🙂
Oh, and an Ocean Blue production run! On everything! Or at least on the OW, Lap, and Emperor. 🙂

Arlla wrote:I had a few hatching empresses and a hatching emperor, and I just love doing the eggs. 🙂 So I’m starting with those.
Ooh, I love those! I think the blue one needs just a little something else — some faint blue antiquing on her pearl underside? A darker shading around her eyes? But I love the basic color scheme and the inspiration — we have some big blue-n-black butterflies here, and I’ve always been fascinated by them!
Please not Orientals; I wanna buy whatever-it-is, and I just can’t muster enthusiasm for another Oriental family. (The Peacocks I have are enough!) 🙂 They might make great spectrals (could you get/put faceted eyes in a Spectral? That would really make the “butterfly” theme, and it would look really neat — I’d say, even better than the “normal” Spectral eyes! It would probably make Pern fans happy, too…). And of course I’d love to see a Butterfly Lapdragon!

I took a couple of my own pieces in, since I didn’t have a catalog — they made quite an impression! So that might be a great way to introduce the topic (and, who knows, maybe even get someone else into collecting!) and convince them of how awesome Windstones are. (Plus, there’s no proof quite as convincing as ten pounds of dragon, regarding your willingness to start spending money in that person’s store!)

Melody, I bought a Mouse Wizard as a Christmas present to myself (a White one!) last month, and I’m completely in love with it — so I thought I’d ask why it seems to be a discontinued sculpt. As far as I remember, it was only made in the three original colors, not any of the newer releases — no Ruby or Black Gold (wow, that’d make for one pretty MouseWiz!) or Red Fire… why? Please tell me nothing has happened to the mold, a la the poor Gothic Uni! Did it just not sell well enough?
What I really want to see most, even more than new colors, is new mouse-colors — what about a black mouse, or an Essex http://www.afrma.org/ratmkd.htm#essexrat, or a Lilac (http://www.miceandrats.com/sel_lil.htm), or (one of my favorites!) Black&Tan (http://www.miceandrats.com/tan_bla.htm)?
Unsurprisingly, I’m sure, 🙂 I’d love to see the hypothetical “new mice” released in White robes (I could start a Wizard conga-line!), but I’d be happy with, say, Black Gold or Amethyst too… squeek*

Dragons4Life wrote:So I NEED to know 😀 ….in the case of your dragons what is defined as a complete “dragon family?”
Is it the father, mother, young, and hatching? Or does one need those plus the fledgie, emporer, hatching empress, hatching kinglet… *pauses and counts fingers*…err lap dragon, spectral riser, spectral (sitting), scratching, coiled, mother coiled…and….curled. (I think that covers them all…)
This is actually important to me in collection terms. I am wondering if I have to slowly acquire a complete family or rob a bank in order to get ALL of them…. 😆
Heh, I define “complete set” as “all the sculpts I like” — so my “complete set” of Whites will include everything except the Hatchling, the Hatching Empress, Coiled/Coiled Mama/Curled, and (due to cost, alas, and not dislike) the Secret Keeper.
(All I still need are the Hatching Emperor and the Rising Spectral! Soooooo close!)

I think with TLC they are all fixable (we would include the horns that were taken out, of course).

Hey, Melody, I know this isn’t really your forte/area of management, but I seem to be having some problems with the messaging part of the site — I tried to send Kyrin a PM on Dec. 23, and was shocked to log in today and find no reply — till I noticed the message is still in the “Outbox” rather than the “Sent Messages” folder! Somehow it’s refusing to send. I tried composing a new message, and the same thing happens — it’s sitting in the “Outbox” but not actually going anywhere!
I couldn’t remember who exactly is in charge of webmaster/server issues like this, so I figured I’d ask here and you would at least know whom I should direct my alert to!
Thank you!

…NOT counting the only one I’ve bought (BVP OW prototype), who’s clearly the best because it tempted me to pay for it :), I’m going to say: Labradorite Griffin couple. Followed by the Ocean Blue OW. Or maybe the other way around; it depends on my mood which one I wish I had more!

NicoleH wrote:I can say that I saw two emerald prototype OWs sell this summer ( I was luck enough to get one) and those were originally sold for around 500.00 and the two that sold this summer went for around 1000.00 so rare pieces so increase in value over time, but I think there are just so many production pieces out there that if someone offers a piece at an store price or an inflated price people know they can just wait and another one will come up for cheaper eventually. It really just depends on which piece it is.
Yes, this. Older pieces in Peacock color, in particular, always seem to sell pretty cheaply, doubtless because the color ran for so long (and was so well-distributed: *if* a store had Windstones, they were *always* the Peacocks, back when I was first collecting).
Older pieces in White seem to do well, usually (too bad I’ll never — knock on wood! — sell mine!), probably because they weren’t made for as long (I think) and they just weren’t “pushed” as much as the Peacocks were; fewer people saw them in stores, so fewer people bought them.

At least you have a matched set! My poor male looks a bit of an outcast, surrounded by all those gleaming, mediaperson-teeth-white dragons. 🙂 Maybe I should try to pick up one more golden-y one, to give him some company…

The only thing I really have an “army” of is Laps, though there’s a trio of OWs. 🙂
I don’t have an up-to-date photo of them, either, unfortunately (*curse* having 99% of my collection in another state!), but here’s an older photo:
Just mentally replace the Champagne with an Em-Pea and it’d be completely accurate. 🙂 (Man, my Em-Pea has never met any of her sisters! That ought to be fun to photograph, once I’m reunited with them…)

Normaly I do not name stuff…but i DO have a ruby lap I called Shimohi, a peacock Emp I started calling Elliza( every time i looked at that thing it looked like a pissed off girl, so Elliza it is) and my Jade scrather I decided to call Trillium.
Most of them I don’t; for some reason, unlike most of my other possessions, names just don’t seem to suggest themselves for the Windstone flock.
However, my BVP Old Warrior (prototype) is named “Valkyrior,” because when I went looking for names that had to do with the aurora borealis (because of his wings), I encountered this bit from Bullfinch’s Mythology:
“THE VALKYRIOR are warlike virgins, mounted upon horses and armed with helmets and spears. Odin, who is desirous to collect a great many heroes in Valhalla, to be able to meet the giants in a day when the final contest must come, sends down to every battle-field to make choice of those who shall be slain. The Valkyrior are his messengers, and their name means “Choosers of the slain.” When they ride forth on their errand, their armor sheds a strange flickering light, which flashes up over the northern skies, making what men call the “Aurora Borealis,” or “Northern Lights.” 1
And my two (of a planned four) “Elemental Dragons” are named for their elements: Argentum and Aurum. (I was quite happy about this; the simplicity of the naming was a big bonus to the whole Elemental idea.) 🙂
