Retail is one of those places where people come and go so often, they may not realize yet that you’re a face that is going to stick around. Maybe give it a bit more time?
That said, the people who were making fun of furries, or this dude that is constantly irritated with you for not knowing the ropes… I know it’s easy for me to say this, not being in your position, but I think you’re better off not friends with people like that. Or could be, anyway. Maybe they’re actually really nice people, but if they’re not, and they’re very close-minded or judgmental of you and your hobbies, that just seems to me likely to make you miserable. I would say keep looking for signs of kindness in your other coworkers for now; you could always try getting on with these guys again later when you’re starting to feel more comfortable and confident in the work and work atmosphere.
I like Dragoneer’s suggestions. Is there anyone else who was new/hired roughly around the same time as you? You might have more success bonding with someone who may be having similar acclimating experiences. You could also try suggesting other fun things your coworkers might enjoy, like seeing a movie together as a group or a bowling night…?
June 9, 2014 at 12:01 pm in reply to: Rescue Kitty Cookie With New Kitten and Pebble Pictures! **Updated** #913846Gosh, I don’t know the first thing about cats (I’m highly allergic) but she’s so pretty! And so lucky to have been caught and taken care of by such caring people. (That poor old man. Bless him.) What are the names of your other cats, do you have a running theme?
Thanks for the awesome photos Kemuri! Man. I’m almost tempted to get the curly. But I’ve already got the fledgling, and I’m betting the mom dragon is going to be fantastic, too, and I’m *certain* the lap dragon will be based on the photos, and 4 in one color is for me, like you, just a bit much. Still, I bet those photos are really going to sell those sculpts to some people on the fence! (And your husband sounds quite silly, lol. GIVE IN TO THE DRAGONS!!)
I’m a fan of the two-colors idea, but I think I would be more interested in colors that set one another off. Like black and blue, or silver and green, or something. The white and pink is nice, too; I’m just not sure if I’d be a fan of, say, blue and blue or pink and pink unless we’re talking starkly different tints or shades or saturations to set them off… guess I’d have to see a picture.
The poll idea sounds good, too–maybe if the staff are too busy to make one, a regular member could? I know that there are websites where you can make polls for free.
Well fantasy for the unicorns and poads has typically been bright colours and a variety of cool patterns because they are easy to paint on the smooth backs of unicorns and poads. Fantasy for the grab bag dragons has been mostly just bright colours with accents because you can’t really paint patterns on the scales so I imagine for kirins it would be the same, just a variety of colours. The only patterns that seem like they would be easy to do would be Koi which is why I think so many have been done on the babies before.
Also, I was thinking along the lines of what was said above with doing smaller batches of different themes like Koi, Fantasy or Natural, not one big batch, Even if there were batches the size of the curlies like 40 or so of each, that would be cool. I would love a fantasy or natural one. Or even other fish ideas are cool. I am just not a fan of Koi colours and patterns.
Thanks for the explanation. I’d been having troubles figuring out if “natural” might also include those bright colors because, being fantasy creatures, there might not be a real “natural” color for them. If that makes any sense.
I think you’re onto something with the idea of smaller batches that are more central to a specific theme. Even if for sure that means people can only order one, at least that means they’re more likely to get what they want or be able to trade for one that fits their desires. And then for those of us that want GBs of more than one kind, then we can choose to enter multiple times and have greater success… everyone wins. 🙂 (As for me, I really like *some* of the Koi colors/patterns, but not all of them, and would prefer to prioritize accordingly considering the cost.)
I’m not super picky, but it’d be nice to buy one without having too worry about it being a pastel or a fantasy type
Out of curiosity, what qualifies to people as “fantasy” type? I see unusual colorings on the special kirin that can’t normally be found on horse-like animals (ex: cavern spring or diablo), or even combinations of natural patterns (ex: ziger) and those I like but would probably consider fantasy, but then there are also some that have designs or leaves painted on them and I’m usually not a fan of those, but they also seem to be considered fantasy…? Is there any separation?
My GB mini keeper has similar colors to that curlie, but with less copper and more blue. I think it looks great on both of them.
Holy smokes yes, everything in this color scheme too.
Lap dragons haven’t been available in the store since I’ve been on the forum (almost three years now? Maybe I am remembering wrong), so I don’t think we can even really guess at the price for blue morpho when they release. Other sculpts base prices have raised, so I think you’d be safer guessing $260-$300 (more inline with the OW – these are only a tad smaller).
The coiled mothers should be fairly reasonable though. 🙂 I’d guess between $98 – $120.
Goodness! The horn shortage has been going on that long? I guess I picked just the right time to decide to start collecting; I don’t know how you guys could stand things being discontinued for so long. Anyway, that’s a good point and inflation and whatnot. I think as long as the lap dragons aren’t more than 300 it shouldn’t be too much of a pinch. Or if they released in a month or so, as opposed to right now.
Poads in these colors would be darling too, like someone else mentioned. Every time I look at the griffins, particularly the mama, I am tempted to that as well. We should just blue morpho everything. Wolves, kirin, orientals–if it can be painted, slap some blue and silver on it!
How about… instead of a Koi/Fantasy mix, have it be a “Fish Mix” with Koi and other colorful fishy patterns (like Betas)?
Either way, I’m tickled pink at the idea of GB Baby KiRins — no matter what color/theme they are.
Oh, I like this idea! Or even just make it “marine” themed, and then perhaps there could be orca and sunlion or dragon eel or MANTIS shrimp kirin. 😀
GRAB BAG KIRIN? /SCREECHES WITH HAPPINESS, IS HEARD ALL OVER THE WORLD.
Can I ask when? I need to absolutely positively be sure that I am available and have money to grab one or two. …Also if I could request *some* that aren’t koi? I mean I do love the koi but I also love all the other kinds so it would just be amazing to see some variety, and the natural ones and fantasy color ones are also awe inspiring.
.. but even if you do just koirin, I think you have seriously made me that happiest person in the world today.
My turn to ask some questions. …By which I mean a lot. orz, sorry guys.
1. I am assuming that the big difference between soft/fluid body paint and heavy body is the thickness. For those of you who use heavy body paints, do you have troubles making sure that you don’t lose the details under too much paint? How much extender/thinner do you generally use when painting? If you’ve also used soft body paints, can you compare how long they last and, particularly with Golden’s brand, whether there is any difference in the quality of the paint itself that you have noticed?
2. Has anyone worked with the Golden Special Iridescent Acrylics? They’re pretty pricey, even through Dick Blick, but they look so cool I’d be interested in knowing if anyone has put them to good or interesting use.
3. What are your favorite go-to brushes for projects? Not just the type, of course (good recs are on the pdf I see), but the size and/or brand as well. Alternatively, is there anything you would *not* recommend due to durability issues…?
4. I couldn’t find DecoArt’s particular staining/antiquing fluid through DickBlick, but I did find a product by Winsor & Newton. http://www.dickblick.com/products/winsor-and-newton-blending-and-glazing-medium/ Has anyone tried using this for antiquing, and if so, what did you do (did you basically do the same thing you would have with DecoArt’s?) and how did the results come out? I’m a bit confused because the bottle seems to list itself as being oil-based, so… perhaps this is a no-go.
5. For sealant over antiquing, is it safe to use a varnish that you would apply like a liquid, or do I need to use a spray? I see that the DecoArt bottle says that water will reactivate it, hence my wondering/concern.
I think I need some poads…..
Oh my gosh, what color is that dragon on top? He is FABULOUS.
June 4, 2014 at 10:47 pm in reply to: PYO Ki-Rin "Fancy" ridged scale style now in our store! 5/29/14 #913600I found that it depends upon the Sculpt and sometimes if there is a PYO Swap going on. We’re currently at the end of a Swap, so you might be okay.
If I’m interested in a certain PYO I check back periodically and see if the ‘number left’ count goes below 10. Then you can see how many are left in stock, as they are purchased and the number counts down. If it’s something I’d really like to have, by the time 2 are left I go ahead and get one.
Hope this helps. 😀That helps a lot actually! I’ll keep this in mind. 🙂
Hi Melody
Are there any plans to do the curlies in BVP?
I know you’re all painting Blue Morpho everything right now, but my OCD would really like to see BVP curled dragons.
Sometime. Eventually. No rush.
Thanks. Can I ask without sounding too stupid, what does BVP stand for?
As we know, oriental dragons will be going back into the store sometime. When shall this be? I (and others, I’m sure) would like to be ready so we don’t miss them.
Thanks so much 🙂
Your help is greatly appreciated.I don’t know. We need to cast a batch and see how long it takes to clean up the castings. We can cast things with far fewer flaws now, so it is possible that we may be able to do afford to do these in limited production again. I don’t know for sure though!
(I am wondering if we can cast and sell the pyo oriental for an affordable price. Maybe it will be a “sand your own”)I would gladly learn how to sand to paint my own oriental. 🙂
