I haven’t seen anything like that. I think because each project is so individually planned it’s probably not an appealing prospect. But actually, I haven’t even seen any really good tutorials on Youtube for basics like mixing the paint (ex: ratio of paint to medium, wetting the pallet first with pallet spray) all-together in one tut. Then again, I stopped looking after a while and just decided to dive in and, if I messed up, use remover.
There *is* a tutorial out there for how to paint a horse using pastels that seemed decent, but I think honestly that with your experience with water colors (working light to dark and with thin washes) you’re probably better prepared than you might realize.
This is incredible. I want to second Celestial’s request, can I see the finished product? I would never have the courage to do a repaint or a rebuild, but I find this whole process of restoration fascinating.
Excitement intensifies…!
I didn’t even notice the swearing when I read it earlier; but the only swear word I personally consider to actually be vulgar is the F-word. (Buuut that’s just me, that’s different for everybody of course.) Depending on the situation or context in a story, no matter my personal feelings, I feel even that any swearword can work providing that it is used tastefully – for example, consider a story set in war time such as Vietnam; from having read many first hand accounts, I have found that real life soldiers often have extremely filthy mouths, making it rather unnatural for the characters in a war story not to swear sometimes. As for why a character might swear, if one’s life is in danger and one is highly stressed, one typically doesn’t care how one delivers their narration; this is where swearing becomes natural to the dialogue. (Also if the character is just plain cursy!) I don’t know about you guys, but the times that I have been shocked or unexpectedly hurt, I have sworn and there are studies which say that swearing can actually be beneficial to the body in these instances. For my own writing, despite circumstances which might demand swearing, I try to keep to milder words. I really don’t like the F-word much, so I don’t ever use it but I don’t mind if I read it used in tastefully thought out context.
Still, no matter the context, it’s not good to swear in front of kids – ‘Milk for the Ugly’ was obviously not meant for children though. DeviantART is geared for people 13 and up, so kids are not supposed to even go on the website.
Motion books are a new thing which were recently released on deviantART only a few weeks ago so I’m not surprised that people have not heard of them! It’s basically a platform for sharing semi-animated comics, which is what ‘Milk for the Ugly’ is. For some, depending on the artist(s), you will have to pay money (or deviantART points) to view them. These royalties will help the artist(s) survive.
Also, if you guys like ‘Milk for the Ugly,’ you should definitely check out ‘Off-White’ which is Akreon and Vesner’s (the authors/illustrators of ‘Milk for the Ugly’) main venture. It is not a motion book, but it is awesome (it’s a graphic novel) and there’s lots of gorgeous eye candy amongst the many panels. (Beware of blood, some violence and some swearing.) You can find ‘Off-White’ at http://off-white.eu/
Pretty much agreed all around. Thank you for the context about the motion books. That’s pretty cool. I hope that it turns out to be a successful platform for artists that use it; gosh knows that generally speaking most artists are not paid their worth, so every bit helps. I think my only experience with anything similar to a “motion book” like this before is Ava’s Demon, which is mostly a still comic book intersperced with snippets of animated sequences at pivotal points. If you’ve never read it/seen it, you should really check it out. ( http://www.avasdemon.com/ )
@Falcolf, this comic looks amazing already and I’m only two pages in. I have a feeling I’ll be sharing it with a few people I know as well since… wolves. 8| And gorgeous art.
WOWOWOW. I would loveloveLOVE to see zombies or hades themed anything out for halloween, most especially the baby zombie unicorn, that baby Hades kirin, and that Hades curlie. Those were just STUNNING. (and I was already digging them before, my goodness.)
I’ve never seen them before. They do look like they’d be a challenge to paint for exactly the reasons you listed. Plus they might be even harder on a brush, physically, than even Melody’s gypsum statues. Maybe if you had an air brush they’d be easier (though having never used an air brush, I don’t know for sure that’s actually true).
I missed these as well. If anyone should end up with one they’d prefer to resell, I’d also like to know. I am a big big fan of the darker, more colorful ones, but I’d probably be interested in any that are different from the regular tan, ivory, or sand ones still being sold in the shop.
WOW. That Hades collection is just gorgeous. Were they ebay specials or limited productions? I really, really like them…
1. I think ghesso is just for canvases. I never remember using gesso for painting paper mache or ceramic stuff.
2. I’ve asked this question myself and got kind of mixed answers. After experimenting with a foo pup, I would say that unless you’re planning to work primarily with metallic and/or the interface colors that you don’t even need to worry about a priming layer (and if you’re working with the aforementioned stuff, you probably want a black base). The gypsum is white to begin with of course and as long as you’re working with some paint retarder, you should (probably) be fine with it not drying up too fast.
3. I would say maybe avoid the flesh color all-together and just think of colors, patterns, or elements that are symbolic of the character.
For example (and exposing myself as a giant nerd) if I was going to paint a dragon based off of Sailor Moon, I would probably pick a lot of different pinks, maybe, and a little bit of deep red and some pearly colors. I might try making a nebula / star field with it, or just a general interesting but more traditional scheme based around the scales. Or I could go the route of trying to use her sailor uniform for scale colors, paint a crescent moon on the forehead, perhaps a gold band of scales on her forehead, etc.
Huh. That was really interesting. I loved the art, personally, and the small bits of animation were really cool. And the minimalistic sound/music accompaniment was really good I thought. I personally didn’t mind the swearing, but then, I’m kind of vulgar when I speak sometimes, and I think that the *context* of the swearing gives it a rightful place.
It would be really interesting to know how the woman got to having that job in the first place, or what comes next. Does she actually find a successor? What was it in particular that suddenly made him capable of seeing the things? I have so many unanswered questions!
Thanks for the unique share.
What happened? I was lucky enough to grab a drop and when i hit check out, it get this:
I did a happy dance for ten minutes when I snagged it and now I can’t buy it. the notification button just popped up too. This is very disappointing.
Hm. Just a guess, but, maybe you and someone else both grabbed the GB fox at exactly the same time, and the computer slotted it into both, but they checked out first and got it…? Other than that, I wouldn’t know.
If it makes you feel any better (and it probably doesn’t) I didn’t get one either. I’m torn because I really loved the slightly fancier painting styles and the wider array of colors on the GBs. I guess I I’d better hope someone wants to sell (unlikely) or Melody plans on doing more colors or more grab bags. I’m not going to order any of the other colors straight away, though, unless I see they’re starting to run out because I want to hear back from the staff first about what their future plans are…. especially not if there’s a good chance they will be making more of those production colors anyway.
I’ve been watching and watching but haven’t seen any pop out. Do we know if Melody is planning to make anymore grab bags like this? I know she said not to worry if we missed because they were going to be making a ton, but I’m not sure if she meant the regular production ones or more grab bags.
I’m hoping one drops. 🙁 Darn this stomach flu, I normally would have been awake hours ago.
Honestly I couldn’t afford it at the moment anyhow, but I agree with what others say about the koirin pattern. I think in general I’ve decided with the kirin I just want them as colorful as possible; lack of color is kind of why I never really felt a very strong appeal for the albinos. Still, some of the preview pictures on FB showed some gorgeous colored paintings and I will be eagerly waiting for those or for some colored ones in a GB batch (if Melody decides to do that. I hope I hope I hope I hope…)
Is there going to be a limit on the number of pebble foxes we can buy? These seem like they will be fairly popular, although hopefully with a number like *200*… I really hope I can afford (and have the opportunity) to get a couple. I’d like a whole family of foxes of different colors (or at least a couple!), and I have a friend who LOVES foxes and this would be a perfect gift for. And tomorrow is pay day!! Sooo…
Ahhhh I can’t wait! /rolls all over self
I think it will probably be one per-person-per-color… but I am not sure.
Seriously, we plan to make a lot of these in the future. Don’t stress out over these!Oh, really? Well then I won’t stress. I am still excited though.
Edit: changed my mind, after seeing the class photo on your blog I am in loooooove and may have to stress at least a *little* about getting my hands on one.
