-J R R TolkienThat is SO COOL.
I’ve always been really curious about the cover art world. How does it work?? Were you involved with the book your art was used for, did you just send in art and they had control over where to use it, were you commissioned for a specific picture…? I’m fascinated!
I wish I were any good at all at 2D art. I’m totally enamored with the idea of getting one’s art of the cover of something that kazillions of people read."He that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom."
-J R R Tolkien… so…
…I started writing a book.
Sort of. My husband’s the writer. He’s working on the first novel of a series we’ve got planned. I’ve been editing that one. But he let me take a crack at the first draft of the second book in the series…I’m so excited, but also intimidated as heck. I’ve never written anything more than 20 pages, and the vast majority of writing experience I have is essays for school. This is dark fiction. Quite a difference! It’s what I enjoy reading, so I know sort of how it should be, but it’s the sheer weight of a whole novel… and organizing it so it flows and stays interesting… and yikes!
It’s no so bad, really – I’ve got the real author to salvage it later. I’m trying to do a NANOWRIMO approach and just write a bit each day without worrying too much about it being good writing.
I feel a little out of my element! I’ve done a lot of art, but not THIS kind of art!

uh….. really only because I only had a few hatchers to play with and I wanted to try different colors on the eggs…! I guess these guys came from the same rookery but different nests. Maybe their moms are friends 😉

Bleh!! I tried mixing sealant in with the paint to do a different sort of layering, to see if I could get a better build up of depth – boy was THAT a failed experiment! And then there was trying to antique after I’d applied indoor only sealant… if you ever want a nice crackling effect…

It occurs to me now that I may not have the same color of eye balls and jewels in the right sizes for the rest of the dragons I’m planning to paint in this color…

I’ve got a new photo program and I haven’t quite figured it out yet so maybe I’ve been exporting them a little too large… let me know!
Huh… raffle prizes might work, I never thought of that. Usually my rejects are pretty horrible, though! I guess some of them look alright from far away…
Finished the hatching emperor today. I’ll try to get some photos up later…

-J R R TolkienHey! That flapcat has my name on it! … XD literally. Well, she sure is pretty! I feel like I should put a bid in on her for being my namesake.
I’ve been wanting to do a raven griffin for a LONG time but was always afraid I wouldn’t be able to make it at all visually interesting, because they are just so black all over, and too much interference blue would also look bad, though I agree I think a little would look good… ravens are hard!

-J R R TolkienAren’t those eyes great?? I guess they were used in one of the OOOLD pieces, the toad from the old animal line, I think. But they don’t fit any of the eye sockets for the dragons. Not one. They’re floating around in the empresses eye sockets with excess glue filling up the gaps. But they’re so neat! They’ve got that funky shaped pupil and the irises are actually golden instead of a flat color. I wish I could use them for sellable special pieces, but oh well.

-J R R TolkienI can’t wait to get to a dragon who isn’t in an egg. I want to see what kind of fun things I can do with the rest of the body.

HEY mother nature makes pin holes in her eggs!!!LOL but hopefully not in her dragons! 😉 Trust me, she’s a MESS. You guys might buy her, but John and Melody would never let her out of the factory. Definitely not up to company standards! But I’ll work on getting that color on some other dragon…
Huh, you guys are right she IS jay colored. Not what I was trying for, but hey cool! I love jays and corvids.I’m really glad you guys like the cowry color! I love it. I want to see it on an emperor, though I don’t have an emperor to paint at this time. Maybe an Old Warrior…? 😉

Jeez, I’m totally out of the loop… I really need to catch up. How the heck are you all doing?
It’s been a rough… what… almost a year? Around our house, and I haven’t had much time for painting, but I’m doing my darndest to get back in the groove! Dragons have always been really intimidating for me, because the scales are so smooth and hard to paint, but I’m giving it a go…I had a few hatching empresses and a hatching emperor, and I just love doing the eggs. 🙂 So I’m starting with those. Of the two I’m picturing, though, only the brown one will go to the factory to get sold – While I was painting the blue one, I discovered much to my dismay that the casting was bad – she’s covered in little pin holes. They don’t even show up well in the pictures, but it really does look terrible in person. And pretty much every other thing that could go wrong in the painting process did, so she’s a real mess and will stay home with me to be a color sample.
This brown gal’s colors were modeled a little bit after a caramel Cowry shell, so I’m calling the color Copper Cowry. The paint is subtly iridescent, and there’s just a little bit of color on the feathers of her wings – red and green – that reminds me a little of the color sheen on the top of oil. It’s done with interference paints, so you can’t quite see it until the light hits it at the right angle. Her nails and horns are an antique gold. Her shell is sealed matte and the dragon herself glossy. I hope to paint more dragons like this, if you guys like the color! Tell me what you think.
This is the baby that won’t be sold, due to her pin holes, but let me know if you guys like the color. It’s hard to get a good blue, and I’m not totally satisfied with this one. She was inspired by those big beautiful blue and black butterflies with the pearly dots on the edges of their wings… I really don’t know what they’re called. Her name is Eleanor, and whoever gets the reference gets giant kudo nerd points. 😉 I used some of the old ‘toad’ eye balls for her, since they don’t fit anything at all and I wanted to use them for something.
Maybe an oriental in this color…? Sheesh, I’m going to get myself into trouble. That would be really hard to paint!! Anyway, let me know if I should try to put it on something elseAnd finally some things to come, little hatching pegasi and the eggs out of our friend’s barn that served as the inspiration for all the eggs. I hadn’t blown out eggs since I was in kindergarten… it was harder than I remember! (the yellow junk on the one in the back left is masking fluid that I haven’t peeled off yet. It lets me splatter the egg without getting paint on the rest of the sculpture.)
