One night in the hospital and I am already home today and able to walk around. Besides having my first hot flash, this hasn’t been anything like I expected! All the well wishes and thoughts went a long way. Time to enjoy to recovery time with a loving husband.

as you can see there are several colors. not sure if this is the type of paint you use though.
These look a lot like the Spaz Stix brand of paint I use on some of my PYOs (I only use Spaz Stix after I’ve put down a base coat of acrylic because I don’t want the Spaz Stix to touch the gypsum directly). I know Spaz Stix is formulated for the bodies of model cars (basically plastic). The stuff smells really chemically strong. I thought Windstone used water based paints so I’m not sure if these are safe for use on the gypsum of the production pieces. Would be SUPER COOL if it was though!

And the one time I insisted on pulling it out so I could prime and paint it was nerve wracking! I’m wondering if next time I order one I can ask for it not to be glued in already.
Edit: I think I’m going to ask that right now. If you’re interested I can let you know what I find out.
Yeah, let us know what you learn about the horn! I’d be very interested to hear what they say.
Okay, I got a response from Susie. What follows is pretty much what I was told.
“Hi! I’m sorry, we did not intend for people to remove the horn to primer and paint it, although I realize that doing those things while on the unicorn is difficult. The main reason we glue them in is because each one fits a little differently and it takes some work to get them to sit straight while the glue dries. We don’t want to send them out to people not glued in and have them have trouble getting it to glue correctly. I’m pretty sure we use epoxy to put them in (and they should be in there tight!) and we don’t expect people to have that on hand in their homes. One way to paint the horn without messing up the animal, is to put a plastic bag over him with the horn poking out through a little hole.
I asked the Powers That Be and if we have a PYO Unicorn on hand without a horn already in its head, we can sell it to you. Right now I’m pretty sure they are all complete with horns, but tomorrow I should be able to check to see if there are any more of them. If you didn’t need one right away, but were planning for the future – put a note to me in the Customer Notes on the order and I’ll try to send you one without the horn glued in.”

Now, I hate to critique artists who are better at any skill than me (and that’s most lol) but to be really picky (because at first glance,-WOW!) I’d say where the horn is attached looks awkward. It doesn’t look like it could happen in the wild (assuming that hippocampi are real animals) and the angle of the horn too-I prefer unicorns with horns that have a 15-20 degree angle so it stands up a little more straight. Also, the silver stripes in the mane could be blended more. They seem a little harsh.
On the other paw, I LOVE the soft feathering of the red and orange patches on the tail, and the appaloosa spots. The texture of the rock is great too-I’m amazed you sculpted the whole thing (even though I have been stalking this thread ^_^) and I love the free flowing nature of the tail fins-great job! I’m thinking if there was a way to get the waves to be translucent if you did something like this in the future-maybe some sort of acrylic/resin? Totally kick it up a notch. Still love this one <3
I also like the rocks, waves and flowing fins. The texturing and shape are very nice on all of it. I’m not sure how feasible it would be on a project like this, but they do sell translucent sculpey if you’re interested in trying that in the future (the downside is that sculpey requires baking to set up).
I agree with the others about the horn. I’m not sure how necessary it is. I think this sculpture would look just fine without it. To me it just doesn’t match up with the quality of the rest of the work you’ve done.
As for the paint job, I like it very much. Individually each component (fish & horse) look great. My only tweak would be the transition between horse and fish could be smoother in the paint scheme.
Overall, I think this is really a fantastic piece. My critiques are really very minor. I applaud the amount of work you put into him. The forms and colors are lovely and I think you should be really proud of yourself. Leah is lucky to get such a nice piece. Very nice!
