        Started painting mine. And boy oh boy, I had a MOMENT. After spending several hours painting, my sculpt decided to tip over. It didn’t fall on the floor and break or anything (thankfully). No, instead the head of the sculpt landed on the edge of my paint palette and literally CATAPULTED the paint up into the air to splat all over the sculpt itself. I just about screamed at my horribly cartoony disaster moment. The only blessing was that by some miracle the paint landed on areas I had not painted yet. So I rinsed them off as best I could, let it dry and masked over the colorful blotches with white paint. I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to paint over the areas with the INTENDED color scheme. But yeah, that was my bad moment. -sighs- It seems like every swap has at least one accident, doesn’t it? Hopefully that was this one’s. ^_^;

lol did you take a photo first?

Oh my gosh, I was in such a panic at the time that the first thing I did was bolt to the sink with the sculpt. There was no time for pictures! -laughs-

LOL! I know I shouldn’t laugh, but that sounded so funny! Glad it didn’t potentially ruin your paint scheme. Sounds like a neat experiment for a ‘Splatter’ color scheme, which is related to ‘Tie Die’ I think…maybe your sculpt wanted to be really colorful. 🙂

At the time I had just spent 6+ hours painting and was not in a laughing mood. When I calmed down, yeah it was funny. And I think a splatter scheme is an interesting idea. After I calmed down it actually made me consider the idea of securing a small pyo in one of those spin painters and trying to spin paint a sculpt. For a ‘Splatter’ color scheme…I’d take it outside on some newspapers on the lawn. Not flicking paint around inside! 😀

As for my swap sculpt, it’s already going to be colorful…so it can just forget that splatter nonsense! 😉

Where do you usually find nutritional yeast in a grocery store? I’ve seen yeast for bread making and such in the aisles but never nutritional yeast. Would you have to get it at a specialty store?

Edit: Sorry, read the next post a little more carefully. Look for the yeast in specialty stores.

One other thing I could add to anyone interested. There is a dog breed that is bred specifically to look wolf-like. I don’t believe it’s an official breed yet, but it is rather beautiful. The NAID. The acronym stands for ‘Native American Indian Dog’. You want something wolfish looking but are looking for a dog? Get one of those. Just a warning though, they get pretty big. At least the girl I saw in person was. SO PRETTY! <3 But I've never owned a dog before and I think that breed requires a more experienced hand so…I'll just stick to looking.

Edit: I don't believe NAIDs are wolf dogs or hybrids. At least, they are not supposed to be. They're supposed to be 100% dog.

Here is a post I wrote about NAIDs in 2005, shortened and edited slightly and with personal names removed. Just as a disclaimer, I have not kept up with NAID news for about 10 years. I am sure there are happy NAID owners out there. However, in the past, these animals were known for being extremely hard-to-handle. I don’t know if the temperament of the NAIDs has been improved at all in the past 10 years, or if there are any serious breeders attempting to standardize and improve the “breed”. From the founder’s website, they still appear to be a random mix of shepherd/husky/mal crosses sold at ridiculously high prices. If the wide variety in their appearance is anything to go by, I would suspect that the temperament, at best, might vary just as widely. If someone is interested in a wolf-like dog and wants to buy from a breeder, I think they would be better off buying from a reputable husky breeder. Anyway, here was the situation as of 2005:

It’s good to see more info. The breeder website I had looked at that the owner of the NAID I saw in person seemed well done. And they seemed to genuinely care about their dogs. They appeared to be very concerned about where the puppies went, if they were spayed/neutered, if they were taken to the vet, etc. Alas, it has been several years since I’ve seen the website (I don’t even remember their name). But they did state that they were not a recognized breed at the time. And I have to agree, the prices of the dogs were unbelievable! -shrugs- As I said before, this kind of thing needs a more experienced dog owner. Personally, I think it’s better to get a dog from a good adoption agency or the shelter. I don’t really trust breeders all that much. Too many of them lie just to earn a fast buck. I guess that’s all I have to say now. I never feel like I say the right thing on these kinds of threads anyways.

Ugh! Sympathies on the chickiepoo who doesn’t know how to handle her problems maturely. Hm, on Facebook I had my name as my nickname but tweaked it so that it shows as my alias with my real name displayed. I understand that may not be an option for you but thought I’d suggest it as a possibility for the future. I’m sorry you lost all your pics and messages though. That really sucks!

The ‘Fire Berry’ Scratcher is gorgeous. I really like how and where the dark wine red/purple coloration was applied. I think he’s my favorite ‘Fire Berry’ so far! Good luck to everyone bidding (I won’t be, trying to work down my credit card debt. -laughs-)! 🙂

Thank you all so much for the wonderful tips to help get me started. I *have* watched videos but they only help so much; I’m one of those people that learns by doing so it’s just a matter of breaking down and doing it! The positive encouragement is just what I need to get over that mental hurdle.

I truly do appreciate the comments on variation in painting styles! It gives me ideas of what to try for myself. Additionally, I hadn’t even thought of using a lazy susan…might need to jury-rig something similar but at least I can think it through first.

Hannah–thank you for the shopping list. I’m sure I could go in and browse for HOURS (I can’t help it…I like looking!) but it will definitely help to have a _set list of specific things_ to take with me for comparison.

                            As for –further questions–
I was wondering about metallic sheens?
I have a color scheme in mind for a piece, and it requires certain parts of the beastie having a golden glimmer over the parts. Should the gold be mixed into the base color, or is that something that needs to be applied in layers over the top? Or is mixing in the metallic just going to disrupt the main color too much? Silly question, I know, but I’m kind of a silly person.

Also, if I try my hand at antiquing and am using two different colors to antique different areas, should I apply a clear coat between the layers to protect the different antiques? Or is letting one antique dry enough of a barrier?

And yes, Ela_Hara. I love my avatar too; I’ve used it for years (as I have this name, although my full avatar name RylorienLuna is rarely used). XD

For a gold sheen try interference paint. However, interference paint is a little pricier than normal paints. I would not mix gold paint into any of your base colors. It will unfortunately change the color of the base.

If you don’t want to purchase interference paint (which needs to be mixed with a medium in a 1:1 ratio) then you can also try thinning gold acrylic paint way down with water to create a super thin wash.

I do not antique so I can’t answer that one. Sorry!

I’d like to, but I’d burn out. I have trouble just getting a sketch a day. ^_^; I HAD started a one sketch per day for a year and then I fell hopelessly behind. Now I’m just trying to finish the 365 day sketch book. And I have posted none of these sketches anywhere. -laughs-
