My first windstone was bought for me when I was still in elementary school. Saw it in the Tobacco Shoppe and haaaaad to have it, begged my mom with tears until she gave in. I’d loved dragons and unicorns for FOREVER. I think she was afraid I was going to break it, but it was seriously one of my most treasured possessions and was something I took really good care of. It *did* unfortunately get a spot of chipped paint on the nose, but not until I was much, much older and after several moves.

I bought my first one for myself when I rediscovered them in college. Actually bought a couple for myself that year because it was at a convention and I hadn’t seen them in aaaages and wasn’t sure if I’d ever find them again.

Now I’m 27 and have only really just in the last couple months started collecting in earnest. The day that I outgrow dragons… I’ll be really surprised if that ever happens.

Good question. It would be nice to have a size comparison between the two statues.

Whoo hoo raffle time again! I’m really excited, this new dragon sounds super gorgeous. (And specially painted for the occasion? Sweet!)

How about Goof up grab bags, with no pad?

Technically speaking, the little standing koirin is already above my current budget. But if Windstone does this, I will tell my winter vacation/trip to Australia that it can go suck itself and dig into my savings and just pray to god we can order more than one/I get one(some?) I like without having to trade. I’m dead serious about this.

From what I’ve seen in stuff on youtube, the retarder, paint, and medium all get mixed together on a pallet. If you have a pallet spray, you can spray that on first to help keep your paint wet from the bottom up.

Also, thank you for the instructions Lokie. 🙂

Wow. I’ve only ordered from Windstone so far (and one other place years ago, so that doesn’t really count) so I’ve never encountered this, but I’ll definitely be wanting to keep my eyes open for this. I was really worried about brokerage fees when my pyos were shipping, but I was lucky and nothing happened….

I had great fun with this, too, and I learned a lot. Also, if I hadn’t done this Quest, I wouldn’t have really gotten into Reptangle. So there’s an added bonus.

Can’t wait to find out who the lucky winners are. Fingers are crossed!!

I don’t know why I hadn’t checked out the full range of your PYO stuff until now, but I have to say, everything on this thread is absolutely stunning and inspirational. Thank you for sharing!

Oh no. 🙁 I would follow Kim’s advice in this case. I mean, maybe it’s possible to do the repairs yourself, but you paid for a product that wasn’t broken, so I don’t think you should have to settle.

I’ve mixed liquitex and Golden brands together before, and had no problems. Just my experience though, not sure if others have. Just make sure to follow the guidelines on the label of the Retarder, as too much will make your paint finish sticky and won’t dry properly.

DD: So THIS is why my PYO pup feels sticky!! (Maybe.) Not to thread-jack, but if anyone reading this should happen to have Liquitex slow-dri blending medium, would you mind telling me what exactly the instructions for using this medium are? My instruction label is written entirely in Japanese so it’s useless to me. 🙁

Truly, I thought these were all lovely before, but having been trying my hand at a little foo pup now, I think I can better (at least a little, anyway) appreciate just how much skill goes into all of this. Wowzers.

OK, good to know! And yeah, I always try to go via Canada Post, at least the item is easier to get if Im not at home when it arrives.

Lets just hope it gets handled gently in the mail… I hope it gets well well packaged…. I know how some of the parcels get handled (I happen to work there, and see how some of the parcels can get into mishaps when other larger items get placed on top of not-so sturdy boxes by some brainless people 🙁 ) Is there any insurance if an item does arrive busted ?

And lets hope customs doesnt charge me additional fees…. *crosses fingers*

Hey there! So, just a few things to say. I’ve never used Windsor’s acrylics, but they also make oil paints and those I have used at the recommendation of a teacher. I think they’re pretty good quality, it just depends on what your budget can manage. (I couldn’t get any shipped to me; for some reason in Japan certain Liquitex products and all the Windsor line are a no-go.)

As for your items arriving, not to worry. 🙂 I ordered a big box of PYOs just earlier this month and was actually kind of worried when I read that the foo pups (I’d ordered two) are not boxed. However, when my box arrived I found that all of the other statues had been double boxed and the foo pups themselves were wrapped very carefully first in a styrofoam envelope and then a bubblecushion container; there were also lots of packing peanuts. Inside the second box for the individual statue, the statue should be very carefully wrapped with layers of cushioning butcher paper. I haven’t opened up all of mine to be sure that none of them broke (perhaps I should have) because i was concerned about getting them back into the box, but both foo pups and the small dragon I ordered arrived in perfect condition, so I think that bodes well for the others too.

                            Hope that helps!

When I was a kid, the local craft shop would sell plaster and ceramics that we could and did paint. I don’t know how plaster compares to gypsum, if at all, and definitely none of these seem to be anywhere near the same quality as windstone statues, but still maybe this resource would help?:

                              http://www.plastercraft.com/

Personally, I’ve never done gypsum statues either and I’m a little nervous, I just received my order earlier this week and although I was just ACHING to try earlier now that I have them I’m nervous. BUT I ordered foo pups for experimentation purposes. If I mess up, I mess up; shit happens, life is one big experiment, you learn from your mistakes, etc etc. 🙂 If I were you, I’d try a foo pup or the muse and see how you like it! What can it hurt?

Awe!!! SO cute Melody! I would LOVE to see these (as it stated there could be a slight possibility of) as PYOs in the future?

Any thoughts to that possibly becoming a reality?

That lucky sushi cat up on ebay sure is a cutie; and it does say even in the product description it could become pyo. I’m not sure if I’d want one for myself personally, but I could definitely see painting one for someone else or them being in popular demand amongst the forum crowd.

They say the wings can form through poor grooming, a genetic defect or a hereditary skin condition…”

Gonna be honest and say that I do not understand how “wings” can form through poor grooming. That’s skin and bone we’re talking about here. I mean, I have always understood “grooming” to mean brushing; unless they mean cutting things off?

This is kind of neat, but I would have been terrified if my animal suddenly started having growths or what look like extra appendages. Probably because my first reaction would be to fear cancer. I’m glad to hear that this sounds like it’s entirely benign and won’t hurt the animal though.
