Thanks, all! The foam shelf liner sounds like a brilliant idea, I’ll definitely have to give that a try. The bracing for the small cabinet is on order; if I’m happy with how that specific product works once installed, I’ll get more brackets for the bigger (non Windstone) cabinet in the dining room. I just hate how most of those really aren’t designed for antique curios…sorry, not really wanting a visible anchor on top of a short cabinet, nor am I thrilled about drilling into a vintage piece that’s older than I am! So we’ll see how that goes.
I grew up in the SF Bay Area, so I’m not unaware of precautions, I’ve just gotten lazy since being up here. LOL We do have homeowners’ insurance, but I don’t deem one-of-a-kind art objects as replaceable, so the point is to get them as protected as possible while on display, knowing that a big enough quake is going to cause bigger problems than we can guard against.
Depending on where you & the collection are geographically, we have Windstone fans here on the boards from all over the world, many of whom might be happy to help you evaluate what you have in person, especially if you’re planning on selling. (Given your avatar pic, I can at least say there are several of us in both the Seattle and Portland areas who might be able to help. GO HAWKS!) 😉
Regarding ebay: most Windstones do at least hold their store value fairly well, assuming good condition. Retired colors may be valuable or not–depending on how long they were produced and whether it was limited production only from the factory, or the ones released to retail dealers, which are more common. Signed pieces can go up dramatically, only a little, or not at all in some cases, but generally speaking they do go up and sell pretty easily unless overpriced. As others have stated, packaging is CRITICAL if you’re shipping them out, or else any proceeds you make will end up needing to be refunded! Gypsum does not travel well unless certain precautions are followed; plenty of us have experience with this, so please don’t hesitate to ask.
Drag0n, I’m so sorry for your loss. ((hugs))
They’re not completely gone until the “notify” button comes back. If they’re listed as “in carts”, do check back. They have a tendency to jump out of carts and back into stock for a bit after release, as people change their minds or release ones they were holding for friends.
As with the last few batches, I’m not in on this one, but for the second week in a row, I caught one for a friend who couldn’t get to the computer in time. These are pretty, more to my taste than most of the koi-rins, but the one I REALLY would have liked with the multi shades of blue one. He’s stunning.
Good luck to all!
The black’s toes really will be an easy fix for you. I wouldn’t fret over working on him, you’ll do fine. But realistically, even if you somehow screwed it up to the point where he’s worse than he is now (HIGHLY unlikely), the old flap cats are only about twenty dollars apiece on ebay. They haven’t really appreciated over the years–I paid $20 each for my siamese pair in a retail store around twenty years ago! My black batwing, I picked up in mint condition from ebay a couple of years back for around $10 plus shipping.
So you’re not working on a particularly rare piece, not limited, not signed, and not hard to find–even if they are retired in those colors. The black is also fairly easy to paint match. It’s a very good choice for a first repair! If you’re going to use the baking soda and glue fix, just do it a little at a time, layer by layer, and you’ll have a gorgeous kitty with proper paws again in no time at all..
If you don’t want to deal with finding and using Apoxie Sculpt, there’s another trick used in this thread that works remarkably well, using two things you probably already have on hand…baking soda and superglue:

I used it myself on a uni who’d lost his horn and a chunk of his forehead with it. Very easy to use, and very effective too. Apoxie Sculpt is worth getting if you’re going to be doing major repairs or lots of them, but for one or two small bits like cat toes, I wouldn’t bother, not when this stuff works very well.
$2.99 for both is a steal!
April 10, 2015 at 10:15 pm in reply to: Will There Be Grab Bag Standing Ki-rins Soon or Other Grab Bags? #927764Thanks for the update, Susie! Keeping an eye on things for a friend, so it’s good to know I won’t have to worry again until Monday. 🙂
February 13, 2015 at 3:02 am in reply to: Grab Bag Directory of Wolves and Foxes (and more, if there’s enough interest)! #925670Hannah, was there ever a section done for the last batch of GBY unis, the super fancy ones? It looks like I owe you a few pics yet of GBBs & poads, need to know if I need to pull Magnolia out of the case and photograph her as well.
So many beauties, congrats to all! This one is my favorite so far…always been partial to dark woves with gold eyes.
And I’ll echo the sentiments of others; I miss seeing Windstones in stores. Being able to see a sculpt up close and personal is a big difference from seeing even excellent pics online!
September 30, 2013 at 1:39 am in reply to: I changed my forum name, but I'm still the same person. 🙂 #903472I’m glad you started a thread to let us know! I probably would have been looking at the forum going, “Hey! She stole Dragonlove’s avatar! How rude!” LOL 🙂
LOL…I saw one of the classifieds before I looked at the thread, and had exactly this reaction. 🙂
THat’s a lovely picture, all warm hues. What colors are the lap and male dragons?
Thanks! Some of that’s probably the halogen lighting from my desk lamp. The dragons are both copper patina, the first teal eyed batch. It was a much warmer copper though than the most recent batch was, and I absolutely love that shade. (Their eyes look a bit off in this pic, but the paint shade is pretty close.)
Because I generally prefer variety rather than matched sets for my collection, this is the closest I’ll ever come to a “family” set. The pinks & purples:
(L-R: “Gothic Rose”–1st candy batch, “Magnolia” 9/2013 GBY, “Briar Rose” 2nd candy batch)
I think I’m finally done collecting pink/purple unis! They’re so bright, they tend to dominate the cabinet. I probably need to rearrange things & give them their own shelf so the others actually get to show off a bit too. 😉
Ooh, Lokie, love yours!
The Post Office decided to drive me a bit nutty with this one…First it said Saturday, then Monday, and then this morning it said delivered!
Midget was NOT amused at being left in the cold mailbox all night. But she’s happily ensconced with her sisters on the desk now.
(Sorry for lousy lighting, it’s absolutely pouring today so outside pics are off the table. Her front is blue, shading to lime green, to yellow, and then to peach on her back. Copper nose, gold toes, blue eyespots, gold eyes. She reminds me of a parakeet.)
The “crossed” eyespots crack me up:
Joining the crew on my desk…
Poads: Mignonne (teal with copper face), Mariposa (black w/ orange butterfly), Malibu (sunrise leaf), Mama (black peacock) and now Midget, the tadpoad.
So many amazing pretties! Thanks for sharing!
