So….I might have gone overboard 😅 I’m going to slowly post photos of this family so it’s not overwhelming, first up are most of the oddballs that got finished first! I’ll get a full group photo when everyone’s finished! And I did grab basically every sculpture I could find …

Finished another dragon over the weekend. Its name is Nebula and it’s the same Sparks paint as before, but over a white base instead of black.

The color is a bit stronger in the photos than irl. It’s been too cloudy to go outside and take more accurate photos.
There is glitter mixed into its topcoat but the camera just kind of blurred it all together.
The piece of star glitter which family or group it’s from, since I plan on painting quite a few of them.

This one will be heading off to a friend soon.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments on the piece! I just finished another of these small dragons over the weekend too.

This one is called Supernova and I based it around the super colorful photos of nebulas. It’s a mix of Sparks paint over a black base with a glittery glossy top coat. My camera makes it look kind of flat but irl it’s more of a shiny metallic oil slick and very beautiful in natural sunlight.

1. I think ghesso is just for canvases. I never remember using gesso for painting paper mache or ceramic stuff.

2. I’ve asked this question myself and got kind of mixed answers. After experimenting with a foo pup, I would say that unless you’re planning to work primarily with metallic and/or the interface colors that you don’t even need to worry about a priming layer (and if you’re working with the aforementioned stuff, you probably want a black base). The gypsum is white to begin with of course and as long as you’re working with some paint retarder, you should (probably) be fine with it not drying up too fast.

3. I would say maybe avoid the flesh color all-together and just think of colors, patterns, or elements that are symbolic of the character.

For example (and exposing myself as a giant nerd) if I was going to paint a dragon based off of Sailor Moon, I would probably pick a lot of different pinks, maybe, and a little bit of deep red and some pearly colors. I might try making a nebula / star field with it, or just a general interesting but more traditional scheme based around the scales. Or I could go the route of trying to use her sailor uniform for scale colors, paint a crescent moon on the forehead, perhaps a gold band of scales on her forehead, etc.

Oh wow! That blue and orange one with the big koi on the back is stunning!!! Also loving thay one that looks like a rainbow nebula in the vast black space!!!

Hey, i am still learning to paint these guys and was wondering how the “magma” effect was achieved. I guess what i mean is, like how you have two colors inlaid like that. ( yellow and red behind the black) those tiny cracks are so hard to get into so it had to be before the black right? it is a very dark color.
