in reply to: Smashed emp…. #880340

Sorry to hear about your smashed emp! I have a peacock emp that arrived in a condition very similar to what you’re describing, and it’s heartbreaking 🙁 I was able to repair him very nicely by gluing the broken chunks back together with just white (Elmer’s) glue. Tacky glue would also probably work well, but white glue has just the right consistency to not completely absorb into the plaster, but get in there just enough to adhere the pieces well and not go oozing out the sides.

Although I know others have used super glue or nail glue (cyanoacrylates to those who know their adhesives!) with success, I would NOT recommend this type of thing for a number of reasons. The biggest one is what drag0nfeathers mentioned – you have to have the parts perfectly aligned the first time because it’s very hard to dissolve this kind of glue. With white glue you can soften it with water. Another problem with some super glues is the thin consistency I mentioned above; too thin and it’ll just soak into the plaster without actually adhering the pieces together. They do make gel super glues though, which solves this problem. Finally the other big problem is if you put too much glue on and it oozes out the sides. Super glue will cure rock hard and even if you wipe the excess off before it cures, it’ll leave a streak behind. These glues have been proven to turn yellow and brittle over time, so you’ll have a yellow streak showing as your emp gets older, especially if it’s exposed to sunlight.

What I did to fix my emp was to apply a very thin layer of white glue all across the surfaces to be joined, ensuring the best adhesion. Then for any remaining seams or areas of missing plaster I infilled with epoxy putty. If you have another emperor to make casts of the missing sections from, you can recreate the surface texture almost exactly that way.

Best of luck! I’m glad your thoughts are on repairing him rather than sending him to camp 🙂

Very pretty unis Branzyboo! I like the facial expression and the lime green eyes of the one on the left, and the striping of the one on the right.

I’d echo a lot of the above advice, which is really good! The only thing I wouldn’t do when washing a piece is let it *soak* in water. Older pieces tend to have teeny cracks, fleabites or rubs that may not be visible with all the grime right now. Letting the water soak in can cause the gypsum to absorb it and paint to flake up. I had this happen with an old Gargoylingus, but in this case it looked like its previous owner had used glass cleaner or something with a solvent to wipe it off.

Which brings me to another point – don’t use any cleaner with acetone/ethanol/alcohol in it – it may dissolve or fog the clear coat finish if left exposed to the piece for too long! With the piece I mentioned above the clearcoat had been completely wiped off in some places, and water got through even when I only used a damp cloth to wipe it clean. A mild dish soap should be just fine. I have used rubbing alcohol applied with a cotton swab to dissove sticker glue, etc. but if left on the surface in a good enough volume there goes your gloss coat!

Good luck with your cleaning, you should post before and after pics 🙂

Stephanie and Shotzy, I believe your unis look more like axis deer than generic fawns. Unless they’re axis deer fawns! 🙂 Either way they’re both adorable.

Congrats Phoenix and Alegria, you got some of my favorites! All of the oryxes we’ve seen so far have been really handsome critters.

This is my fiance’s first Windstone 🙂 A pronghorn-icorn! Or would that be a prongicorn? Either way he’s beautiful; tiger stripes, brown eyes, turquoise jewel, and a big white butt!

So pretty! I’m keeping my fingers crossed for an oryx, but the ocelot and clouded leopard unis seen in the thread so far are gorgeous too! This batch is turning out to be just like the last one – there were so many we couldn’t get a truly good look at all of them in the class photo. So as they’re appearing here, they can impress us all over again 🙂 Now to just wait for the mailman on Monday….

in reply to: Classified Ads are OPEN! (IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ!) #877905

Wow, I really like how the Classifieds section is looking! I think it’s a lot easier to look through than the flea market/trade boards are now.

I also agree with keeping non-Windstone items separate. It may not have been such a big deal when there were less forum users, but the crowd’s (happily!) pretty big now and with Windstone being a business and all, there’s every right to keep appropriate focus on their merchandise and helping collectors find their favorite pieces.

All in all, thanks Pam for putting this new system together and for addressing the associated concerns!
