whoopsie daisy! laphon1 you’re right! i brainfarted, i knew somebody had elephants, i forgot hannibal, i saw his name on the stones in the painting and i put his elephants with napoleon in my peabrain, durrrrrrrr! lol ha ha. lol i was only a few centuries off right? lol.i’m sure napoleon had at least a few elephants with him in spirit at least, lol. ( insert yahoo messengers silly rolly googly eyed face here) lol. oh well i meant well. thanks fer catching me.hee hee.
in actuality, this painting has negative connotations interpretation-wise, but it is a good example of classic rearing horse.
we all know the tale of napoleon crossing the alps- it was a disaster with all of those soldiers and elephants dying. napoleon here says lets go up to cross the alps, with that pointing finger. the horse rears saying” oh to heck with that, i know whats up there: snow ,cold and death!” the horse knows better, napoleon doesn’t- see that very worried look in the horse’s eye- he know what awaits. the wind blowing them isn’t gentle, its strong and dangerous, like a bad storm is brewing, not a balmy summer breeze. but initially casually looking, like passing by, one may not see that.well, to me her inspiration for the grand looks like the paintings of the renaissance and after where they have the wealthy nobles atop their horse, rearing with its mane blowing in the wind all dramatic, showing the nobles’ regalness, status and power. thats what i always assumed. just seems to make sense to me to put the beautful unicorn in the same classic pose to show off his grandeur.
hopefully that shows. its napoleon crossing the alps by jacques-louis david. i ALWAYS think of this painting when i look at the grand. when i first saw it i was like oh its just like that horsey from that painting! but then again there are lots of fabulous rearing horseys in the history of art.bear with me if my wording is jumbled- i just woke up.lazy sunday.
also, it does show they knew very well about any potential copyright infringement but they did it anyway! however i would say any tiny differences they claimed to have put it juuuust make it different enough would have been differences that could have made when the subject changed. meaning the peacock paintjob varies greatly from sculpture to sculpture, like spectral to scratcher to OW to fledge, for not each exact paint job pattern looks the best on each sculpture pose, it needs to be changed to look its best on the piece. its all peacock, heck even the peacock on the mother and the original family is called peacock and its way different from the fledges peacock, but its still peacock!!! anyhoo, any small variations someone makes are debatable as to if windstone themselves would have put those features themselves on other poses, because its just too close.
if its close enough to cause confusion, its TOO CLOSE.yes this item is super offensive!!! hey did that person ASK to use the pics of the secret keeper?! ha, i doubt it! there’s using pics without permission right there. but yes, just like nam said this is a blatent act of trying to profit off of windstone and DEFINITELY creating confusion, like they are an affiliate of windstone or something.. the “just like the secret here” and “just like the secret keeper there” is rediculous!! not to mention that seller name in my opinion is too close. it really sounds like a name windstone itself would take if selling on ebay. “ilovewindstones” or “windstonecollector” obviously is ok, as they apply a different relationship to the pieces than “windstonecreations” does.
aaaaaand dont tell me if they make the money they want off of selling this one that they won’t paint another PYO off of another windstone color scheme, as its easier to steal ideas than come up with your own!!! hmmm then what do you do about them? well, last time was ok but not this time? then there might be trouble.they definitely need at least an email from windstone saying “we appreciate you love our paint patterns, but we don’t really appreciate their replication as it confuses buyers as to the pieces origin and technically there is protection against anything too similar.” that’s just my irate two cents.
i didn’t post my PYO dragon on ebay because it came out similiar to peacock and i want to play fair. i have backed bills the money from selling that piece would have paid, but i happily took that blow to be pc, and i respect all aspects of the rules, and am happy to adhere to them cuz i love windstones, not exploit them to my own ends.that actually looks like the custom order gray eyes to me. very pretty, i was working on one myself like that but you beat me to it! lol! that’s one fine ki-rin!!!!
ahh whippet its all good… alls fair on ebay right? no hard feelings at all on this end. if i had money i would have bid 40 or 50, but i’m po’! lol! very true, i’m glad i didn’t get sniped! i hate that as i always worry i got outbid by a buck! i was like, ahhhh she wants it, i have no money anyway, she can have it, as it was just a good deal, not something i was dying to have. it would have been a little silly for me to have just one emerald piece, lol! hope arrives safe for ya!
January 19, 2007 at 12:32 am in reply to: tips for photographing pieces?? (EDIT: some better photos!) #528917lol, on the note of the reflect a box here’s what we- my dad and i- did. mind you he is a world class photographer who has worked for the louvre, the met etc….but he’s a pro of making use of nothing if you are in a have-nothing situation…. we made a set up on their dining room table.. windstone box at the back of the table and draped a piece of velvet or background paper over til it was smooth. he had his camera on a tripod and he did have one square umbrella behind him to reflect some general light, plus the flash of course. we had the room lights out. now, for reflectors for the piece to bring up the detail, we used white cheap-o paperplates, bottom of the line- folded slightly so they stood up!! always a super reflector and its totally moveable as to where you need some highlights! not to mention u can tear it up to make it smaller if you need the reflection in only a small area! we did that with the under jaw area on the pyo dragon, very shadowy down there normally. if you need a small prop to lift up the front of a piece, if its tilting ( like you made it yourself and the bottom isn’t level or in his case artifacts that wont sit level) use a piece of oil based clay, picture tacking putty or rubber eraser under your backdrop under your piece, its pliable so it will fit perfectly to the subjects needs and it stays clean since its under the backdrop, which should also go under the piece itself always.
normally we shoot outside in daylight- partly cloudy, plus we are blessed with a close neighbor with a white house as a HUGE reflector- but we did just as well inside. we still use the paper plate trick outside though, as there is always some little area that needs a tweek.
however as he always says, you can have the BEST equipment in the world and it won’t make you a better photographer. there is no sustitute for TIME TESTED EXPERIENCE!!!!!! it so true and so funny, cuz the gave me his “outdated” camera he shot all these big jobs with, with every photo super clear.. he gives it to me, and every photo i take looks like totally crap! always blurry out of focus or moving, with a rare one i get lucky on and its semi sharp. lol. same camera though, same setup, just different operator.yeah i wanted that fledge! i bid like a wuss though because i have NO money now! lol! i was leaving for work too right then and couldn’t bid normally as i was rocketing out the door! plus, i just flatlined my accounts to secure a grand unicorn so i guess i should just be happy i got him at least. ack! i wanted him though, as i have the exact metallic green paint and have done repair work on other peeps sculptures for years, like perfecting the master piece an artist would make the mold off of, etc.. i love the sport of making it match and fooling people! ah well, serves me right for not bidding more. oh well. too much stuff i REALLY want right now, with retiring piece paranoia and all!
good luck fixing him, that’s an easy fix!yeah you got a great deal on that cat gargoyle!! i saw that! woot! i actually got the pig gargoyle i think that same seller was offering, was yours udropwesell ? that was the place i got my pig from. they were super fast and had a good, huge box with lots o paper but no original box. hmmmmm, well, the main thing is that he got to u in one piece.!! that piece is a beauty! i just got a hatching peacock emp and a peacock young oriental and the guy shipped em to me in a shoebox like box, with only one sheet of the air pillowpacks laid in the box!!!!!!! they tumbled back n forth the length of the box the whole way here- now THAT was a miracle they weren’t destroyed! i was in shock when they arrived! what an idiot!! the emp got a tiny nick/fleabite in the paint in his brow, but that was it. its an easy touch up thankfully! peeps are idiots though, they just don’t think sometimes!!
hey, i’m looking for that one too, lol! i wasn’t going to say anything til i had some extra money, like tax time. thats a tuffy, i only saw one ever come up on ebay and that was hmmm maybe 5 months ago? something like that. well, they are out there….. somewhere. but being out at the same time as the leafy winged one that was stiff competition sales wise if you had to choose between the two to buy. when i bought my leafy winged cat piece in the store when it first came out ,they had the bat one too, it was no contest to go with the leafy, for he was just so grand!! but i still like the moodiness of the bat one.
they are all out there though….like i never saw the pig gargoyle come up and then three did in one month, two in the same week! its seems to happen in batches, when they appear on ebay… like the flions on now, i remember we had a couple of gargoyle unicorns up at the same time- now thats my soul piece i MUST have come hell or high water, but i don’t have $$ right now to get one if it came up…….. well maybe. 😈righto! its all good and understood! thank you for the heads up!! they are busy enough out there with the new pieces coming out, new paint colors, limited productions, etc. they have alot to worry about and keep them busy!! poor things!
uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh yeah, this is looking ugly! i just called a bunch of website stores that say they have the grand unicorn “in stock”, and they are out!!!!!!!! grrrrr! that was one i wanted, but i figured we would have had notice before they got pulled-which looks inevitable- though its not for sure- yet. i thought there would been more time since so many others were just retired. well, i guess that happens sometimes, but darnit i wanted one!! 🙁 wahhhhhhhhhhhhh! i won’t be sleeping tonight over this one!!
yeah, i was going to comment on that. i have a siamese (real cat, lol) and even as a tiny baby he still had brown toe pads- it would have been silly and incorrect to have pink pads! lol! well, a black cat with black feet would have black pads too, but that is not as interesting visually for the sculptures’ sake, oh well.it is cuter though with pink pads on black.
WOW, john, thanks so much!! 😳 i’m all kinds of blushy over here! well, i’m fine with my OW the way he is, i’ll touch him up if i have the guts; he is still so beautiful to me just the way he is! the shop keeper told me he ordered him from you guys in june 06 if that does anything for you. i really appreciate the offer to fix my kitty; i’ll give a buzz monday if you’re open, or tuesday afternoon your time to talk some turkey, and as i said i should have the original box.
i figured you guys would like to know one was out there like that, since you are so careful and uphold such a high level of quality. its a real anomaly/rarity for you guys i’m sure!! as a sculptor myself, i would not collect any other line of collectibles, number one because i have such high standards and critical eyes for what i expect to see, (with other companies leaving messy seamlines, pimples, etc. which takes so little effort to remove) and number two i can’t justify collecting something when i could and should make it myself. not so with windstone!! you guys produce such fabulous products it is a pleasure to buy them knowing that i am supporting an exceptional, caring company with a love for the art itself and doing a great job for the personal satisfaction of it!! that is one winning combination!
thanks again for all your hard work in general and concern for my kitty! i’ll be in touch! 🙂 -
