Whoa. I had no idea these race horses were abused so much. 😯 It’s really sad. I wonder if they treat race dogs the same way. This is inhumane. 😥

It’s not *quite* outright abuse; as long as the horse is winning; they are fed well, have top notch vet care, and are pampered. It’s just that horses don’t physically mature until they are at least 4 years old. When you run an immature horse, their bones aren’t quite as dense as they will become at maturity, and the risk for stress fractures is higher. The stress fractures, if they aren’t caught can become outright breaks like they did today.
There are some theories that due to the fact that Thoroughbreds are considered inbred/linebred to a fair degree that they are more prone to genetic weaknesses that have now been concentrated by the tight breedings. I remember a few horses from the track that had soundness issues. We were always poulticing and wrapping legs and hand walking horses that were not sound enough to be worked.
I kind of look at the racing in the same light as child labor. It amounts to the same damned thing. 😥 Before the slaughter ban, the unlucky horses would find themselves on a trailer to the nearest auction house, where they’d end up going for meat. Now with the ban on horse slaughter for human consumption in this country, I truthfully couldn’t tell you what happens to them now. 🙁
And as far as the dogs go, there have been a lot of articles written about how they kill the ones that don’t do as well, and just dump the bodies. We don’t see as many rescue Grayhounds up here since there aren’t any local dog tracks. But I would imagine it’s close to the same thing.

I wish that it had been that filly’s heart; she’d have been gone before she hit the ground. She broke BOTH front ankles, and was put down on the track. She literally ran herself to death. At least there haven’t been 50K photos of her like there were of Barbaro. I cringed every time I saw one. 😥

I worked at the track back in the late 70’s, and when I asked the trainer I worked for why they ran the horses so young, he said it was so they’d know whether or not the horse was worth the work.

I can’t tell you how many times my vet has posted TB’s FTGH after the meets are done for the season. She’s the vet for 2 of the 3 tracks here. She picked up a Northern Dancer granddaughter for nothing, simply because the filly wasn’t fast enough. I’m not a fan of the TB’s after having worked with them on the track, but they certainly deserve better.

I’ve seen the fuglyhorseoftheday blog. The writer sure doesn’t pull any punches. She has quite a few good points.

Has anyone watched the Derby this afternoon? I can’t understand why the TB’s are run at such a young age. What happened today just points out that they run the snot out of babies that haven’t even finished growing. 👿 😥

A study conducted by UCLA’s Department of Psychiatry has revealed that the kind of face a woman finds attractive on a man can differ depending on where she is in her menstrual cycle. For example: If she is ovulating, she is attracted to men with rugged and masculine features. However, if she is menstruating, or menopausal, she tends to be more attracted to a man with duct tape over his mouth and a spear lodged in his chest while he is on fire. No further studies are planned at this time.

😆 😆 Hey, you left out the scissors lodged in his forehead!

I have 6 horses of my own. My family together has about 20. 4 out of 6 are retired from showing. I do hunter jumper and three day eventing. I really enjoy derssage.

This is a pictire of my Spanish Norman Serafina at Mayfest horse show in Lexington! She is my best friend!

Very nice!! The Spanish Norman is the Andalusian/Percheron cross, right? I looked at them ages ago.
I did dressage long ago with my old Pinto gelding, at a time when Pinto horses simply weren’t supposed to do dressage. (tongue firmly in cheek. 😀 ) I got away from dressage, tried 3 day eventing, and again, the Arabs had a hard time there, too. I’m 5’8″ with a fairly long leg, and even though the horses don’t have any problem carrying me, I look a little too big for some of them. I got back into driving because my husband doesn’t ride, and started doing combined driving, which is the carriage version of 3 day eventing.
I was competing pretty often with our stallion, who *really* shone in the marathon phase. If I point him at a hazard, he’s like “Yahoo! Let’s DO IT!!!” These guys are like cats; they are just incredibly agile. I’ve had RB change direction in mid air on me a few times. The one reason I started breeding was because the lines I’ve got proved to be very sensible and easy to train. And at least in harness, most times there isn’t a lot of breed bias 🙄

I agree 100% tasgrs. We’re looking to move out of NJ eventually, too.

I know I’ve seen you mention places in NJ before. What part of Jersey are you in? I’m currently in central, near Great Adventure. The area used to be nothing more than pine trees and lots of chicken farms. In the last 10 years, our property taxes have nearly doubled, and don’t get me started on how many new developments have gone in. 😡 And we’re well and septic; no city water, no sewer–no natural gas in our neighborhood–yet. No kids in the school system, volunteer fire and ambulance, and we pay for our own trash pick up. So, what’s the bang for my buck? 😛

The bright side is **for now** I can still tack up and go out the driveway and be on some dynamite trails without having to use the trailer. That was the A #1 reason we bought here 11 years ago. And truthfully, this place is more than I ever figured we’d have while we still lived in NJ. But my dream is to find a place with about 30 acres and a nice house and big barn….and GRASS!!! Have I mentioned that there is no grass here in the pinelands? 😆 Too much sandy, acidic soil. But, for now I try to be happy with what we’ve got. It’s easier than getting overly PO’d. 😆

Ya know, I’ve been going back and forth between the different colors on the SK, and as much as I like the original and newer peacock, I gotta admit that I don’t like the SK in the peacock. Is it my monitor, or is her chest gray rather than purple or green?
And I do have to admit, the gold is quite striking. Go figure! 😆

😯 I didn’t know there WAS a pets thread. Then again, I didn’t wade through every last page on the forum, either. 😉

It’s a good life to the best extent it can be here in NJ. The way things are going, it’ll be too expensive and too crowded to live here too much more. The only thing keeping me here is the husband’s job; once he retires, we’ll be outta here so fast all anyone will see will be tail lights and a dust trail. I hate NJ, and have ever since I was a kid. My job allows me a great deal of freedom to possibly relocate to, and we’ve started looking at property in other states. I work full time as well as running the “farm” (farmette would probably be a better term…) and the hubby has 35 years with the same company. I can’t exactly yank him out of here just yet.

Is is me or does there seem to be a lot of folks here that have horses/ponies?
How about sharing what kinds of equines we all have?

    I’ll start with mine:
I breed Arabians. I have 1 stallion, RB Bellagio age 22 years, 4 mares, SS Fajulya 23, CSA Amira Kista 11, CSA Jerusha 10, and KRH Sabrina Jewel 6, 1 filly GTS Al Mas Hura 2, 1 colt, GTS Hanshouf (pending) age 1 month, and last but certainly not least, my 3/4 Arab Pinto gelding Xanadu Shahwan who is our senior citizen at 30 years old.
I ride and drive, have shown more in harness than under saddle, (especially lately… 🙁 ) do Civil War and Revolutionary War reenactments, parades, team penning and try to get out for quiet trail rides whenever my time and health allow. The bloodlines I’m breeding are relatively rare within the Arab gene pool, and the main reason for breeding was to have more horses with the hallmark “In your tent” temperaments that the Arabs used to be known for, before the halter show world blackened the breed’s reputation. (Long story, and unless everyone wants to hear a MAJOR rant, not gonna go there… 😛 )
So how about it, fellow horse owners? C’mon–pony up! (pun intended 😆 )

For one thing, isn’t there a statute of limitations on how long one has to pursue a lawsuit? Something that should specify how long she has before she has to waive her rights to the lawsuit?

I can understand her wanting to sue the original person who got the dog; if she has a signed contract from him that states the dog should be offered back to her if he no longer wanted it, then yeah. He violated his side of the agreement by not honoring the right to first refusal. But as far as I can see, *you* shouldn’t be persecuted for bringing the poor dog home. And with all the dogs she already has, the words “Puppy Mill” come to my mind. She should be more concerned about the dog having a good home, and that doesn’t come to my mind if she’s making remarks about paying fees and “maybe” getting the same dog. Grrrrr!

I won one of the special OW’s. He does have the rainbow sparkles, but I had to bring him into the sunlight to see them well.
