I’ve mixed the interference paint with the colour that I wanted. I got a dark (lighter than blood red) with Naphthol Red Light and Interference Oxide Red. I found that if I put the interference over the red I got pink. I also mixed other paints with the interference paints and I got really good results.
I’ll have to try that, I’m so used to doing the colour first and then “accenting” with interference afterward, I’ll do up some test mix batches ^_^
Arlla wrote:Mimi – just speaking from my own experience, being intimidated by the prospect of painting one of these beautiful sculptures is totally normal!! I sat at stared at the first 5 or 6 PYOs for literally hours before I started on them, too scared to pick up the brush! 🙂 But you’ll never get to see the pretty griffin or kirin or dragon that you can make until you’re brave enough to risk “ruining” it – and it’s not all that bad, really – in the worst case scenario, all you have to do is paint over it. All you’ve lost is the time, and that’s not really lost because you spent it learning and getting better!
😉 You should definitely try and paint a few. And even if you get a little discouraged, KEEP TRYING! It’s so worth it!
I felt the same way! LOL I still get that way with simple things like blank canvases sometimes! LOL
Oh I am sorry for repeating a topic, I didn’t recall seeing this particular subject before!
I’ve got Golden paints and I’m familiar with putting them over black or dark colours yep ^_^ Your example is a good one – say you wanted the purple-blue to be darker but still as iridescent? I’ve tried thinning the interference paints with medium which helps but there is a point where it seems to mean less shimmer factor because i was spreading the paint so thin. I’m not sure if i’m making sense there LOL
Another interesting thing regarding the red interference is that when you put it on, it’s actually pretty pink. When i was doing my Sunbeam gryphon, i had a hard time trying to get a shimmery layer over my vermillion-type red that would enhance the red without going pink. I added orange interference and then i had to make sure it didn’t turn too orange/gold. That’s why Melody saying the ruby coloration is done with automotive paint made sense to me.
Now I know Windstones are painted with acrylic and I’m assuming it’s a special kind of acrylic made for airbrushing. My question to Melody (or anyone!) is about the shimmery quality of dragons – how is that achieved? Is there a brand you buy that comes that way or is it something you have to add to normal colours? I recall in another thread you mentioned that the ruby colour is made from automotive paint.
I know acrylic can come in shimmery shades in the Interference category but I’ve noticed that they seem to be light regardless of the colour so that when you put them overtop of other paint, the shimmer is more pearly-related than a darker, jewel tone, if you know what I mean?
What I really want to know is whether it’s possible for someone to get the kind of glowing emeralds and deep blues you get, when we are painting our PYOS, if there’s a trick or a certain kind of paint we would need.
Sorry this is such a rambly question LOL

Between my strange freckle problem and my yellowed unicorns (actually they were won off ebay, I didn’t notice they were yellowed until I compaired them with mine.)<>What can I say other than I have some strange windstones.
The only thing I know that will yellow them is smoke.
I haven’t had this issue on Windstones, but have had it on some other sculps. They looked fine when new, but turned yellow over time and with increased light exposure due to a yellowing of the sealant/finishing coat, not the paint itself (in a non-smoking house). Has this ever been a problem? No, we have never seen this. If anything goes wrong with something, we get the stores to return the piece so that we can see what happened. We’ve never seen yellowing, but who knows what has happened to these unicorns? There are things we haven’t done to them that might change the surface, such as intense weird wavelenght light from a tanning lamp, or black light maybe? Spray wax finishes somebody dusted them with? Who knows.Heat and fire are the only things we have seen that really will yellow the paint. But it turns it golden, more on one side, and is sort of pretty- on the pearl paint, anyway.
Are your unicorns evenly yellow?… or just on one side? Perhaps we just used a slightly creamier colored paint on yours. We do mix the unicorn paint ourselves, it is possible that one batch was the wrong color. (I’ve heard that we sometimes paint things the wrong color.)My mind just screamed jade at that. 😆mine too.
Funny, for some reason mine screamed “FUCHSIA!!!!” :X

Quote:. They said I shouldn’t be worth any more than $500, and that THAT was pushing it because computers “do all the work for me” regardless of when I told them everything was drawn and colored by hand, page by page, and each page took yadda yadda hours and I worked with such-and-such materials.
Ohhhhh I am familiar with THAT line of thinking. I did a series of digital paintings for my art program about two years ago, using my tablet and Photoshop/Painter, each of the 6 paintings easily took me 15-20 hours and people had the nerve to tell me that the computer program “did all the work for me” so they weren’t as good as “normal” paintings.
Even my friends, who hear me talk about art all the time, they don’t really think about the costs until they commission me for something. Recently, a friend asked me to do an artwork that involved twelve figures and she wanted it to be a combination of lineart and digital colouring. When I told her that it would cost her $200 for something that complicated, she was stunned. But to draw twelve complex figures, then scan them and resize them to fit the format she wanted, THEN colour them, THEN tweak the colouring to her liking, THEN get it printed professionally, it took me a long time and costs money for the printing! LOL She said something like “But your online store, everything on there is under 50 bucks mostly!” and I had to explain “Well, a lot of that stuff was done for school, not commissioned specfically for someone – that’s really different.” And that was something that didn’t require any expensive real-life materials! LOL
it’s at $226.00 now! Go Nam go! 😀 I knew i wouldn’t be able to compete so I’m enjoying watching the price go up now LOL
