Oh those unicorns are just absolutely smashing! I especially like the blue one. There is something about how you applied the color that makes it look deeper. The only place I’ve seen that before is with cars. When it’s done on a car it’s called Tri Coat. It always gives the color a luminosity and depth. So getting the effect on a small Windstone is pretty amazing and awesome looking.

I’m definitely going to have to pick up some color shift paint to try with my interference paints now. Squee!

Thank you all for your kind words and replies!

Kim, that does me a world of good to hear that. I’m normally never quite sure if I’ve gone far enough with a design on these guys. So thank you very much. I’m hoping to gradually creep up to more elaborate paint schemes as I continue painting Windstones.

Ela-Hara, thank you very much! Dichroic Heart has to be one of my favorites to date. Can you believe she’s the one my cats chewed on while I was painting her!? Her poor nose! T_T I’m looking forward to seeing some of your PYOs! So I’ll keep an eye out for when your thread goes up.

On a side note, after staring at the 5 headed dragon for awhile I think I may have an idea. This gal’s scales really reminded me of King Ghidorah. It’s not really elaborate but…it seems fitting. What do you guys think?

Not mine either. I haven’t painted one of the smaller dragons yet.

Hey is that the incense dragon smoker that they sell at walmart? I’d swear I’ve seen that before!

Indeed she is! I bought her five or so years ago. Tried incense cones in her and…they go out in about a minute. They don’t even keep smoking! -sighs- The air circulation is too poor even with more holes drilled in. So time for a makeover!

I love the old world aged parchment look you achieved on the Kirin! VERY nice. The map looks just like an old style treasure map, right down to the compass points. And the accent colors look great. Congratulations!

I like the orange and purple on the dragon too. You’ll have to post more pics once you get the Keeper’s eyes in!

Here is a commission Keeper for Phantomess that I completed in Sept. She loved the Aquarian Keeper that I did and really wanted one but she wanted wings and coloring like the small Aquarian dragon that I did. I took the lighter coloring and followed her suggestions for her piece and here he is. I am so glad that he turned out just like she wanted!! So pleased with results.

This fellow is a current WIP. I am loving the colors on him. It is a color scheme that got stuck in my head and I needed to paint it. Let me know what ya think of him! I have no clue what to name this fellow either so if you have a suggestion feel free to toss it out there.

How about ‘Salamandra’ for the WIP guy? He looks like a take on the mythology of the fire salamander.

Thanks for the reply. I think in the future I probably will start a thread. But not until I have something new painted. I already have all my older work posted in the PYO gallery so there doesn’t seem to be a point in putting it on the website twice. But definitely disappointed that there doesn’t seem to be space to leave comments about people’s work in the restructured PYO gallery.

As for creating a thread about ink and/or pastel staining, if you want to invest the time in creating a FAQ for it I think you should. I found new things to try in painting by looking all over the place. So the more variety that’s out there, the better in my honest opinion.

Do folks usually do a base coat on gypsum? I always just paint the colors on… 🙂

I think it also depends on the method/style of painting you use as well as the kind of paint. When I first started painting I didn’t thin the paint. Just brushed it on straight. When I was doing that I put down a base coat. Now I’m trying a different method where I thin the paint and apply it in washes. For that I’m not putting down base coats. I must say that this new method is really appealing to me.

But when I’m done with my current pieces I’m going to try the ink stains. The acrylic paint washes look like they behave in a similar fashion to the ink staining method so I’m hoping it will give me practice before I try the ink.

Also, I have a side question. What does everyone think is a good way to showcase your most recent work? The PYO gallery doesn’t seem the most conducive way even though it’s the most convenient.

I’ve finished mine and am just putting the final coat on it. I like what I did and hope my swapee does as well. I feel that these swaps help those of use who are so-so painters get some practice in. I enjoy seeing what people get and am curious to see what my swap partner painted for me. Swap pieces are a part of the person who painted them–unique and special.

I think that’s a big appeal of the swaps. Seeing a large number of new pieces and the diverse number of ideas that show up all at once. It’s very exciting and I can hardly wait to see who painted for me and what they painted. I agree it’s also a good way to get more practice at painting.

It’s also a good way to get your work seen since the PYO gallery has been restructured. Even though the new PYO gallery is very easy to navigate it’s a little difficult to figure out what the newest additions are now.

On a side note, I’ve double boxed my piece up so it’s ready to ship! Just have to wait until November now! Oh and I took pictures of it before I boxed it up…so no worries there. Besides, it’s safer for me to box now…I have cats that have chewed on my PYO pieces in the past! T_T

I’m all done.Gosh I hope they like it.If you don’t,feel free to part with it,no hard feelings on my part.

I know how you feel! I hope the person I’m painting for likes what they get from me too. Though if they don’t like it, I wouldn’t mind taking it back. 😉 I almost don’t want to give my PYO away. But when the time comes, I promise I will.

Sweet, I’m finished painting! Just need to clear coat now and then glue the eyes, pad, etc. on.

Well, I’m a bit late commenting so I will just say this. I’m glad you were able to repair your PYO piece for the swap. I’m sure it’s a huge relief on many levels.

                                Hey Dragonmedley and Prezaurian —
Thanks for the advice! I did try the eyes in before I started painting , and they fit well without being too tight or falling out. I also put a very light coat of paint in the sockets, because I wasn’t sure if I should leave any blank gypsum. I did the same on the underside of the PYO’s base. I assume the felt will still stick okay after spraying/painting the clear coat finish.

                                🙂

Not a problem! I imagine the felt will stick just fine with paint or without. I use Elmer’s for that too.

Oh! If the eyes in your piece aren’t too snug, you might want to consider putting a very thin layer of paint on the inside edges of the eye socket. On my first PYO I didn’t, and if you look at her from the right angles you see a white rim around her eyes. But I would be cautious about that, too much paint might keep the eyes from popping into their sockets if they’re especially snug. As for gluing, Elmer’s glue should be good enough to use. I’ve had good luck with it.
