Don’t be nervous! It’s just a pumpkin, not a Windstone! 😀 I’ve done it before, it didn’t last long, but it looked neat ’til it sunk in.

You’re right, of course! I think I’ll stop by the grocery store after work and pick one up 🙂

    Hi guys!

I’m currently at work and browsing (trolling) the forums and decided that maybe a good way for some of you to get to know me would be through my own artwork. I’ve been super excited about the griffin that I ordered from the PYO shop the other day, hopefully it will get here this week and I’ll get to start working on it on my days off.. but until then, I’ve started to go on color overload! I’m big on color and I’m still not positive what colors I want to use on him when I get him..

In any case, I’ve linked a few of my favorite paintings and sketches (with a little explanation for each) – I’d love to know your opinions or suggestions! I’ve never been all that great about explaining myself, I generally let my artwork do the “talking”.. that said:

I’ll start with the sketches first.

I’ve always loved women’s profiles and I’m much better at making them than men’s (they always tend to come out very feminine! ><). I sketched this back in 2008. It's not a terribly good scan because my computer at home makes things look a decent bit darker than any other screen I've seen them on, so I apologize in advance! Most of my sketches look washed out because of this. I should probably use gimp to darken the graphite a bit more.

This is another one that I did in 2008. Her eye is giant, I know, and she’s not exactly pretty, but it was one of the first sketches I made that experimented with this particular style of shading in the hair, and I fell in love with it after that.

I’m not sure if I should put up some sort of warning for the next one or not. I’m pretty well known to my friends and family as being in love with creating zombie animals, and they all started with this one little chipmunk I turned into a member of the walking dead. I guess in order to make SURE i don’t offend anyone, I will be putting him at the bottom of the list after my paintings. Can’t be too careful! Suffice it to say that he is a black and white sketch, and I want everyone to understand that I LOVE animals, and in no way do I wish harm upon them – I am just a “salty and sweet” type of girl – I LOVE juxtaposition and putting cute and scary together makes me smile.

This is a painting I did for my brother for Christmas one year – He and I are big fans of Bjork, so I took a picture of her in this position and added some face paint that I had seen her wear on tour once. I put them together and gave it a celestial background that reminded me of her musical style.

This is one that I started one year and put it away for almost another year before I completed it – I had the green woman down and I just didn’t know how I wanted to go about making the background. Well, my sister in law saw it and begged me to complete it for her – so I finally did, in time for her birthday. It is a fairly large painting and sadly this photo doesn’t do it justice because the flash was on. I have been meaning to get a better one taken of it, but every time I’m over their house I forget! To date, it is my favorite painting that I’ve done. It is rich in color, and in order to make the edges look nice (it is on a stretched canvas) I nailed red velvet onto the sides. I almost wish I’d kept it, but it is on display at my brother’s house, so it makes me happy that it’s getting love 🙂

Alright, this will be the last one that I put up for now – it’s something that I did over 10 years ago when I was still in high school. The project was to paint an animal without using its natural colors – I picked herons. I love this painting because even though it’s not my best, it definitely showcases how much I love color 😀

Oh, and I almost forgot! Here’s the Zombie Chipmunk…

Call me morbid, But I think he’s adorable 🙂

    Thanks for looking guys 🙂

Gorgeous! I especially love the cat one – the green eye idea is genius!

I haven’t carved a pumpkin in years but I was thinking about trying out the whole shaving-off-the-skin technique to add different layers of luminescence (or I guess I could call it “shading”). Have you ever done pumpkins like this? I’m a little nervous to try but I’ve watched a couple of videos on it and I think I’m ready to destroy a gourd 😀

I think Purplecat put it nicely, and so did grayfire artz. I’ve reread all of the posts that pointed out that what you said was a bit offensive, and I don’t think any of us are attacking you, we’re simply trying to point out why what you said was taken as an offense, and (this is my personal opinion) seemed a bit insensitive.

People are still posting on the topic because it just seems like you’re not getting why we are saying these things when you continue to mention the same (offensive) statement over and over.

Once again, not attacking you, just trying to get you to see why some of us are a little irked by the entire thing.

Yep! I’ve leveled a cow pally (cow as in female bovine, not incorrect term for all cattle ;)) and a worgen rogue and hunter. I love the worgens (and while what faction people choose doesn’t bother me, I’m totally horde. I have 9 level 80s… only one is alliance lol. It’s just that it’s a fantasy game… so I don’t understand why people want to play a human).
I’m very “bleh” about live wow. I only go on a few times a week to grind for the tiger mount (but now they messed me up! Raid groups don’t hold anymore if both players log out! Ugh!). If I didn’t have to mount grind, my live account wouldn’t even be active. Well, until Tuesday when the Halloween event starts! <3 Been after that horse mount for 3 years, and massive hate to the guy who I offered 7k gold to for the mount last year, and he decided to keep it "for the mount number achievement". He didn't want the mount at all 😐 And I have 55 mounts on one toon, and he doesn't have any special mounts! That achievement is possible without "special" mounts.
    Rambling lol.

Ugh! I feel your pain 🙁 Although I appreciate the new way that Blizzard has implemented getting mounts (dailies with personal loot bags), I DON’T like that you cannot trade anything from your bag to people in your group. This was especially frustrating during the Brewfest runs when I got a ram two days in a row and couldn’t even give it to someone else 🙁 such a waste! It’s still sitting in my bank, I’m holding out hope that Blizzard will allow them to be tradable some day.

I am also mainly horde (and I totally get what you’re saying about humans! I at least want to have blue skin or sparkle eyes – hello elves!) I have 2 Alliance 80’s and 5 Horde 80’s but I’m looking forward to leveling a worgen for true too XD. I’ve been waiting forever to try the female worgens though, and they still haven’t been implemented to play! Urgh! Oh well. Just another couple of months and everyone will get to try 🙂

The magic paint stuff really isn’t a secret anymore lol. Seems everyone has it. The “original” magic paint, the paint Windstone uses (and I use) is something called Prizmacoat. 4 ounces of the paint is about $100.
Drag0n found something called “clear effects” for about $10 at an auto store. It’s not the “real” magic paint, and Drag0n has even stated that she wonders if it might change or mess something up in the long run. Basically, the stability of the “cheap” stuff is unknown… but WAY more affordable that the “real” stuff XD I’ve never used it though, so I can’t compare it to the real stuff.

Goodness! Well, thanks very much for the information! I may not have a chance to get any of the real stuff soon but I may just experiment with the Clear Effects on a small section of the Griffin I’m getting.

Also, I hope they make some more Keepers soon – not just because I am dying to paint one, but because yours are sincerely gorgeous 🙂 Can’t wait to see more!

I know I haven’t been around for too long yet, but I felt the need to agree with Kujacker and Koishii. I haven’t yet painted a PYO, but I have been an artist for most of my life, and darned if the first thing that I didn’t learn about paints was that they are expensive. I was given a $100.00 gift certificate for a local art shop when I was in 5th grade and I promptly went down there and spent every penny on about a half dozen paints, 3 brushes, and a single pallette. I actually just went to Michael’s the other day and since I’ve been reading up on other people’s suggestions and the Windstone Staff suggestions, I picked up a bottle of gold interference ($15), Gold Leaf ($10), and some retardent for my acryllics ($8). Just to get *some* of the items that I will need for finishing my first griffon I spent almost 35 dollars. I haven’t even begun to assess my actual paints situation and have not factored in the money it will cost me to get the necessary top coat and possibly some supplies to try antiquing.

As far as paying people for their time, that reminds me of a story – My boss asked me to draw a picture of his girlfriend last year for her birthday. He knew that I’m particularly good at drawing, shading, and creating some neat looking hair, so I agreed. We didn’t agree on a price, and let me tell you that is the last time I do a piece for someone without figuring that out first, because after I handed him the sketch (that took me at least 8 hours of work), he paid me with a smile and a “thank you”. My understanding is that he thought I just like doing things like that for fun. The way I see it is that I got to save him all the time, money, effort, and credit of giving his girlfriend a birthday gift.

I guess my point here is pretty much to back up what’s already been said. It’s NOT inexpensive to paint things, and it’s kind of a shame that people think somehow that it is. I’d rather break my brushes than cheap out on something as beautiful as a windstone piece, and as it’s been said before, it takes lots of time to make these pieces look so drop-dead-gorgeous. $250 may seem like a lot to pay for a painted windstone, but keep in mind that the artists that painted these pieces are selling their time and energy, and after it’s all said and done they may make a small amount of money for their time, or in some cases the only thing they get out of the deal is the enjoyment of painting the piece and giving it to a loving home.

Been slacking on my painting 🙄 Been playing World of Warcraft Cataclysm like whoa lately (which is weird, since I’ve had it for the past few months and barely touched it!).

Ooooh! Do you have Beta access too? I’m loving it, I can’t wait until it comes out on live servers! ^^

Kujacker, your dragons amaze me. I just spent about an hour looking through this entire thread. I can’t wait until there are more PYO Keepers in the store so that I can snatch one up and paint it! I just ordered a griffin, we’ll see how that turns out! It will be my first 🙂

Also, I realize that you probably get this question a lot but I didn’t see a definite answer about it so I’m curious to know (If it’s a trade secret, I totally understand) but what is the “Magic” paint that you use? I’d be interested in experimenting with it, it looks absolutely gorgeous on everything that you make so it seems incredibly versatile!

Bubastis – My cat’s “full” name, although I call her Boo Boo – it was an Egyptian city on the Nile and I was introduced to it when I was reading Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series in which Bast (the Egyptian cat Goddess) claimed the city as her own.

Maladroit – meaning awkward, bungling, tactless, etc. Of course, not all cats are particularly maladroit. I can only speak from experience! Sorry, Boo Boo! 😀

Other words that could feasibly be made into names:

Lilt (to move with lightness and buoyancy)
Gambol (to leap or skip about joyfully)
    Halcyon (care-free)
    Diaphanous (light, delicate, translucent)

in reply to: Windstones in Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes #543604

Oh my goodness, it’s been a long time since anyone has posted in this thread! I have owned Buffy seasons 1-3 for about 10 years now, but I had never gotten past season 3 until recently when I signed up for Netflix. The past few weeks I have been watching them and I just happened to catch that there was a gargoyle behind Giles in a scene in the Magic Box. I paused it immediately (and the look on his face is about what was on mine when I thought.. Is that a Windstone??), I went to the gargoyle page and scrolled down and lo and behold, it was a Windstone! I realize it was pointed out in another screenshot up above this one but I thought I’d add my screenshot as well for anyone who was interested in seeing it a little more clearly.

    So very cool!

    Hi everyone,

I stumbled upon this site a few months ago and had forgotten that it was in my bookmarks until a few days ago.

I’d just like to start off by saying that when I was a little girl (maybe 10 or 11), my mother used to take me to the toy store at a local marketplace once in a while. This was a special toy store – one half was truly kid’s stuff with stickers and bouncy balls – and the other half was collectables like windchimes and little crystal statues. Well, every time we went there I would go (very carefully) over to the “delicate” side of the store and look around at all of the beautiful things and it has stuck in my mind for almost 18 years now that there were these gorgeous dragons in the windows that I would just pine for. I would make sure to take the tiny folding brochure home with me so that even if I couldn’t have the dragons for myself, I would always have the pictures of them. I remembered the artists name all these years, and I’m sure by now you’ve guessed it, but M. Pena never left my mind, and I’m thrilled to have found this website. It’s honestly like revisiting fond childhood memories.

Since that little girl I once was grew up, I have become an artist in my own right, working mostly with acryllic paints and the occasional Borosilicate glass, but still I never forgot the magic that those dragons gave me when I looked at them through the glass of the store front window. For that, I’d like to thank the artist that added to the ever-growing spark of imagination that I was tending so many years ago.

I’m also thrilled to see the Paint Your Own versions of these masterpieces! I definitely can’t wait to get my hands on one of those. I do have one question though, and I swear I’ve looked around but I didn’t see the answer anywhere, and I’m terribly sorry if it’s something that gets answered all the time and I’m simply blind, but how often do the Paint Your Own versions get cast? I’m looking mostly for the Keeper (as I’ve seen is most everyone’s favorite), but I’m also in love with the Kirin and the smaller Dragon.

In any case, thanks for making it through my little introduction/rant here! I’m sure I’ll be seeing you all around 🙂
