I agree quest now, prize later. Besides you could do like a surprise prize since it is supposed to be a random drawing, the prize would be random too, us not knowing it. might add to the fun.

Thanks everyone! 😀 It rained yesterday, so nothing then. It is nice and sunny today though, so I’m off to take advantage of it and get a few more layers taken care of today on the uni.

With pastels, can you spray a topcoat on after? Or do you just have to never touch the thing because pastels come off if you breathe on them wrong?

YES! You actually spray a clearcoat over EVERY layer of pastels. In the pictures, I have 9 layers of pastels and dappling applied. I sprayed after each layer. If you don’t, the layers would just mush together and not be very effective. It also allows you to handle the piece afterward. It just takes time to allow each coat to dry (at least 20-30 minutes). I’ve been trying to take advantage of the decent weather recently (since you can’t spray when it is too humid or wet out either – too much moisture). It’s not a method I can use too effectively in the winter here, for lack of a warm enough place to spray.

Do you use a “workable” spray fixitive or a “non-workable” spray. Like i guess im asking what kind of spray you use.

What size gemstones do you use? And where do you but something that small? mine were the swavorski elements from Michael’s craft store.

in reply to: Primer for PYO Horn on PYO Unicorns #895946

Ya I noticed when My unicorn came that the horn was attached. My friend punched a hole through the bag with it trying to get it out, and have a kind of difficult time getting it back in the box if it is not wrapped exactly as it was when it was sent.

I had assumed that it would be attached later like the gems and what not, but i was wondering if brush n leaf gold or silver leafing would work on the horn?

My friend left me problem solving cause, as her commission piece she wanted ink staining AND acrylic, which means a spray on sealant between them, a conflict with the horn already on the piece.

And would foil scratch them? They are pretty sturdy but I still wonder.. Also I had seen that some people put gems in the mane and tail of the unis. Do they carve the holes they would fit in any larger, or do they just have gems that small, cause the smallest i have (which are seem very tiny) are just a bit to big for them. any tips?

Originally the PYOs came with everything glued in to prevent counterfeiting (people making molds of the PYOs with the eyes and horn in would be more obvious than someone casting with them out). I dunno if this is still an issue or not.

It would take a lot more than household kitchen foil to scratch these suckers, trust me. 🙂

The gems I put in the PYO unicorns fit the existing holes. They are small genuine gemstones, though. But I bet you can find rhinestones that size. You can also carve the holes out a bit more if you want.

what would you use to carve into them, they are very solid. (just out of curiosity, i had a really difficult time making the eye sockets of my winged wolf larger (one was too small))

in reply to: What are your squeaks? Tell Melody here!! #895931

    Melody,

I have an idea for Windstone to make more money to pay for things like that monitor and camera you just needed. Sell commissions in color schemes that have already been done, e.g. for ebay pieces, but on different sculpts. Charge high $$$ for these. Some of the ebay auction final prices show there are people willing to pay that for a special piece. First commission: the Hades mother pegasus I keep squeaking for.

Thanks for all you do :).
    GardenNinja

That is a good idea, but would it depreciate the value of some of the other pieces? (test paints, specials, etc) It also seems that it could be a bit more complicated than our small scale commissions, since they are a large company an all..everyone would want melody to do their piece, and then she would be able to work on much else, would she? ( I am not saying its a horrible idea, I think it is a great idea, it would require alot of thinking out before though…)
