Collecting is supposed to be fun, yet due to actions of some forum members it hasn’t been fun.
Vultures, yes some of the members are vultures. I know several members have mentioned intentionally driving up prices on pieces they don’t want/already have just so a seller would make more money. I say let it go up naturally. Sure the seller may not make as much, but then it will be a better deal for the little buyer.
Gloaters, yes some of the members are gloaters as well. I don’t mind brag threads, if I want I can ignore them. But, when a member crows their good fortune in almost every thread across the board it gets harder to stomach with each one. Make a brag thread and then keep it in the brag thread.
I was the high bidder for whipput’s repainted pegasus the whole week. When there was no real competition I let myself get attached too early. See I have a grey pegasus mare who is a totem of mine and seeing the one you painted was like seeing her come to life. If I can’t afford a repaint than how can I ever expect to afford a LP or LE.
I’ve tried making some Windstone money by selling some things on eBay and Amazon.com, but most of what I have people don’t seem to be wanting right now. I’ve already lost money on listing several items with eBay that haven’t sold. At least on Amazon, you don’t get charged if your item doesn’t sell. Even then I’m only making pennies because I have to pay for the materials for shipping.
I live in a military town that has had one brigade leave already and another two are leaving in the next few months. There are no jobs available, at least not that I’m willing to work. And I can’t afford the price of gas or day care for my two-year-old to commute anywhere else. When the other two brigades leave my husband will be going with them. For some reason I’ve been taking this deployment harder than the last one and it’s made me more emotional. Could be because this one is looking to be closer to 18 months rather than 12.
Im sorry to hear about the deployment, but so far, I have not read anything above to make you call us names. It sounds like you are upset by things going on in your life and are taking it out on us! (Your husband is in the Army… expect deployments) I have not read ANYWHERE where someone has driven up an item to help the seller. NO ONE here has done THAT.
Lots of people with children get a job. You actually have a husband to help you, too. Just cuz its not something you WANT does not mean it will not provide you with a paycheck. It sounds like excuses to me. And we have already addressed brag threads. It has been taken care of and I have not seen anyone bragging all over since DMs SK win.
March 5, 2007 at 3:47 pm #547137Pegasil, I am sorry to hear that your husband is being deployed. Especially since he will miss so much of his son’s formative years. I sincerely hope that he is safe and not in danger.

I really hope you’re not referring to my “give ’em a run for their money” comment. I will only bid on an item I want and I will bid up to what I think I can afford (or more if I get into it). If it goes high, so be it, that just means someone wants it more than I do. 🙂
It took me over a year of waiting and three tries to get my claws on a tan male gryphon. I still haven’t been able to snag one of Jennifer’s *beautifully* painted gryphons.
I’m also military and sometimes we have to “suck it up and drive on” when funds are low. I’m single and I work a second job (plus occasional art commissions) to help pay the bills and afford my “Windstone habit.”
There are Windstones that pop up for reasonable prices on eBay, you just have to be patient and look. If you’ve got some talent in restoration work, you can get a damaged Windstone for much less than a mint one. I’m sure one of the Forum members would be happy to re-paint a Windstone for you…browse the galleries to see examples of our work. 🙂 I can hazard a guess that most of us will take commissions.
I hope you do stick around, pegasil, a lot of this forum has to do with being silly…just check out the Poad thread! 😀
Windstone collector in remission. 😉

Of course, there are a few people on here who manage to live without buying six Windstones a month… I’ll get there. I just need to practice.
Star – I’m glad I got the emerald Spectral too! As soon as I pay for him I’ll have both Sitting Spectrals and two Risers – four of seven. One day I’ll have one of each…
Wasn’t I just talking about practicing not buying Windstones?A kindred spirit!!! I WANT ALL THE SPECTRALS TOO!!! Now if we can only get more colors on the sitting spectral, I’ll be poor and happy 😀
Nooooooooooooo! I missed the Spectral conversation! I just need the sitting emerald and the Brown Riser and I will have them ALL! *laughs meniacally* Am I still alone in begging Melody for Black and Gold and Rainbow Specs?

I am also sorry to hear about your husband. I hope nothing happens to him.

Whoa, I’ve never seen anything remotely close matching that sort of behavior and I think that’s something you shouldn’t say unless you have definitive proof.
I’m sorry to hear about your husband and maybe you have the right idea about taking a break from the forum if you continue to channel your emotional state upon the rest of us, for your own good as well as ours.
I am in the same boat as you and share your frustration about trying to buy Windstones off Ebay only to watch them climb way out of my financial reach but the nature of Windstone figures is that they are expensive because they are made from expensive materials (relatively speaking ie using goldleaf) and they are incredibly well-made and art of that quality deserves to be expensive for all the artist’s hard work. Even if people were made to adhere to some sort of strict auction code that prevented them from pushing prices up, Windstones are not cheap and the only time they are cheap is when they are being sold secondhand by someone fairly unaware or unconcerned of their value.

Still alone? How dare you! 😆 I’ve dittoed every beg you’ve sent Melody’s way!

Please forgive me if I’m out of line here. I have only read some of the posts on this topic, so I might be missing something.
I could see how they could have gotten that impression (of driving up prices). I have seen posts in the past about someone putting in a bid, even though they weren’t seriously going after the piece, which, if a few members did that the price would go up for a potiental buyer. I don’t think they were intentionally driving up the price, but just showing support for the seller. That way when non-members would see the auction they would want to bid seeing that others had already bid (and thereby showing confidence in the piece and/or seller). Even if the outcome ends up driving the price higher, I don’t think that was intent by the bidders/forum members. However, I can definetly see how it could be seen that way since it is a potential outcome.
I can also sympathize with their frustrations about the high prices for certain pieces. I would agree that they shouldn’t be directing it at particular forum members, but such concerns are not without merit. I can see both sides of the argument.
Just my 2 cents worth. 😀
March 5, 2007 at 7:30 pm #547145I have put in a bid and not seriously gone after the peice. I just did for the black and tan dragons on Ebay right now. It does not mean that I am driving up the price for the seller. It means that if they happen to go that low, I will get them. In this particular case, I happen to know the seller. For other items, I usually do not.

That is true. Since ebay is so fickle, placing a bid or not, may or may not make a difference in the end. I wish you the best of luck on them.

You know what? I think I know what you guys may be referring to… is it the PYOs? I have put in low bids with no intention of winning them and to maybe spark interest in it so it will go higher. Maybe thats what you guys are talking about? If it is, I see nothing wrong with it. It all boils down to people are gonna pay what the peice is worth to them. If thats not it, then I honestly have NEVER heard of anyone on here shill bidding for thier friends.
March 5, 2007 at 7:38 pm #547148I actually think Pegasi’s comment about vultures can be accurate – in the funny way. How many people noticed the mint Male Kirin for $65 this morning (my time)? The female for $50? The baby for $20? Not too many, I think – they were snatched up too fast. We are vultures – and always proud of a good grab! 😀

Its ok if you use it to be funny. Others (Even myself and Nirvana) have used it as a joke. The difference is when you are saying it to be nasty and gain sympathy. I wish I would have seen the ki rins! I hope they went to a good home.

Yes, I thought about the PYO and maybe that is what she was talking about. I think it is just to support the seller in this case…and if the buyer wins it then great, but if they loose then they will feel better about it by helping the seller out. -
