The one in your picture looks EXTREMELY dusty! The “color” all over him is too brown (and too matte) to be gold paint.

I think the WW only came out in Emerald and Peacock; and he IS beautiful! πŸ™‚ I don’t even like the wizards, but the Emerald WW on a site I occasionally check tempts me anyway!

I’m weird, I guess — I just don’t like things that smell like foods!

Citrus can be an exception, but it depends on the candle — most “lemon” candles smell like dish soap or Kool-Aid to me, but I have a “Pink Grapefruit” candle by Yankee and a “Sage and Citrus” by a company I forget the name of (they’re a big one, though) that I ADORE.

Let’s see… I love rose, and lilac, and lavender too; also less predictable things, like my “mix” candles (a blend of 2-3 other scents the company makes) that are “Cilantro and Citrus” + “Pear Blossom” + “Peppered Jasmine” — which doesn’t SOUND good, but is! πŸ™‚ I also have a wonderful Tangerine-Chamomile-Spearmint candle that I love!

I have a “Balsam and Cedar” candle from Yankee that makes me wish they sold them all the time (it’s one of their Christmas-only productions), and the “Mistletoe” is appealing, too! Votivo makes two called “Desert” and “Forest” that are also wonderful.

So I guess overall I’d say my favorite scents are plant-type scents — floral or herbal/woody.

I started out critter/color (Western dragons in White, Oriental dragons in Peacock), but when I found my collection was nearly complete I didn’t want to stop! So I’ve shifted to “by one particular sculpt”, at least in part: I want lots of Laps! And also a bit of “as the fancy takes me” — I couldn’t resist the prototype BVP Warriors, so I have one of those, and an Emerald OW, and a male Ki-Rin and a Gothic Uni and a Frog Prince.

I’m starting a new critter/color collection, too — just ordered a Griffin in Black Sunset from a local shop.

So I guess I’m pretty much an “as the whim strikes me” overall — especially since I’m picky and just skip certain sculpts (I don’t have a White hatcher, even though I want “all” the Whites, because I don’t like it) or certain colors (I probably won’t ever buy a Red Fire or Pink Lap, even though I collect Laps, because they’re unappealing to me)!

How do you do your Windstone?

                    Do you collect by critter?
                    By color?
                    By sex?
                    By type?
By whatever calls out to you?
                    A combination of the above?
                    Or some other way?

Myself, for example, I collect by both critter (dragons) and color (partial to the Black-Gold)… But those silver royal hatchlings called me! LOL…

So far only my PYO griffin seems to have had a mishap, and that was after he was finished!

I did tip over a PYO dragon the other day while painting (was holding him tipped back, and he slipped) but he only went about an inch before the table and my hand got in the way, so no damage done.)

Melody, I think she would be gorgeous in Silver, but in all honesty the only color that would really induce me to buy one would be White. And that would have to be… a couple of years away, at the least. (Darn school expenses.)

Heh. I did take ceramics lessons as a kid, too, so that may have unconsciously helped me when I first started painting 3D stuff for fun — I knew how to treat brushes, a few different finishes (I would KILL for some of those rub-on metallics my instructor had! I’ve tried everything, and apparently they just don’t exist, because NO one seems to have heard of them/carry them/have a clue what I’m talking about!)

Something like that might be a great idea if you’ve absolutely never painted before — a few lessons with basic brush techniques to get you used to brush sizes, softnesses, shapes, etc. (I’m obsessive; I use itsybitsy to incrediblytiny size brushes for just about everything, and I like my bristles short for better control.)

If you don’t have a local place (which you might!), I know there are chain ceramic stores like Seize the Clay (whose name never fails to crack me up) that might offer basic instruction.

Bisque ceramic is pretty close to Windstone gypsum — much closer than Breyers, anyway! πŸ™‚ The only thing I’d warn you about is that the gypsum is a LOT more absorbant — watery paint might run off a ceramic figure, but it’s going to soak into the gypsum, and I’ve heard that can cause problems, making your sealer/varnish buckle later as the moisture comes up under it.

Thanks for the help! I took many art classes in high school but never really was a painter I always wanted to draw everything in pencil. That’s a good idea though about the cheap ceramic figures!

Breyers are… a pain, in a lot of ways — all that SANDING, for one! πŸ™‚ And I’m definitely not good enough to risk something expensive (I have three blank resins that I will eventually pay someone to paint for me — at $250 a pop I am NOT going to screw up!). Makes PYOs look downright cheap, doesn’t it? πŸ™‚

The other problem I ran into with CM Breyers is scale! I am soooo impatient, I cannot paint large models — I screw ’em up because I’m rushing to get things done. Let the primer dry for 24 hours? Ha! Not going to happen. πŸ™‚ So I stick to Stablemates, or the occasional LB-size horse. I do keep an old large “body” horse for testing stuff out on, to get an idea for colors, etc. If I don’t like it, I can just sand it off and re-primer that patch, no need to experiment on my actual project horse. πŸ™‚ (I really need to buy a little cheap ceramic something, to test Windstone ideas on!)

                              Quote:

I would LOVE to be able to CM breyers and stones and resins but I pretty much gave up on that idea being as I’d never get one looking realistic horse colored. But with the dragons and griffins and such they can be any color my imagination wants them to be! πŸ™‚

You’re right about that — horse colors are HARD! πŸ™‚ Some more than others. I look back upon my first — and only — attempt at buckskin with horror. πŸ™‚ The very first Breyer I ever redid, though, at a Breyerfest workshop, actually turned out a very nice chocolatey bay. I still have her. Fortunately, when I’m not on a buckskin kick, I tend to favor dark or red bays, so I’m not likely to sit down and think “gee, what I really need to be able to paint is a realistic perlino overo paint!” πŸ™‚ I do long to be able to do dapple greys, though…

I’ve noticed in the last few years my interest in fantasy colors has increased — most of the customs I’ve looked at buying were fantasy colors, and I’m more tempted to paint them as well. I’m not sure why, exactly, but it’s a very liberating — and challenging — change! Because hooray, I can make a blue horse! …Now, how do I make a blue horse look “realistic” or alive?

The other one I bought is for me, and I plan to do him in white and gold, to harmonize with my own dragons. πŸ™‚ But he’s going to be worked on in between the present dragon. (Present dragons, actually — when the PYOs are available again, I’ve got to get a start on the second planned present.)

I figure two is about the max I can do in one year for gifts, so I made two little “dragon tokens” (tied a little tag to a toy dragon that explains what the token is for) to give away. They get the token for their birthday, then send it back to me at Christmas in exchange for the dragon (being a student, the cost of PYOs means that whoever wants one has to consent to it being a birthday-and-Christmas-combined present).

I should put a picture of the token in the next photo session… πŸ™‚
