It’s a really fascinating and long process, so it looks! It really gives a new appreciation to the effort, man-hours, and patience that goes into each piece we hold in our greedy little hands! 😉How did you do that???

That’s the one I was looking for! It is a cat we produced in 1993 or so. Not very successfully.

I just visited your gallery and looked at the new pictures of molds. Is the “potter’s cat” something new? Or have I, in my own inimitible fashion, missed something?

The Potter cat is an almost life sized cat that I sculpted in around 1993,(old!) using my cat “Potter” as a model. He was intended to be an outside garden cat, made of cement. We didn’t have the cement pouring process worked out when I did this sculpt, so we tried to sell them in plaster as indoor pieces…and they were a TOTAL FLOP. I do make spectacular duds. I don’t think we sold a single one from a store! Even the cat stores couldn’t move them.

I saw one pair of these “yard” cats(the Potter cat, with his companion the “Butterfly” cat) on Ebay once. I was suprized that they sold for a reasonable price! I don’t remember who got them though. Them is rare kitties.

I have a ruby red from duncan that looks really good….antiqued with purple makes it look really dark and nice….but in pictures still looks pink….of course that’s on my new PYO….that I just put up

Really? I want to see! That is ANOTHER interesting problem with red, it is difficult to photograph!

You may find something we missed! I wonder why a good metallic red is so difficult? There are nail polishes that are metallic red in color, yet no acrylics.

                    A question and an opinion:

Why is it so important to find a way to get a hollow core on the Secret Keeper?

The reason I ask is, on a piece that’s going to be fairly expensive anyway, in my opinion, even if you were to cut the shipping in half, I don’t see that it’s going to make such a big difference overall anyway… What I mean is, for such a big and beautiful piece, I would expect the shipping to be expensive and it wouldn’t stop me from buying it. When I save for this one, I will just have to save a little more to cover the extra shipping.

And seeing as you have sold 15 so far on ebay without any problem, I doubt I’m the only one who feels that way? The shipping wouldn’t be such a problem if it was only once, one way, but we replace damaged things from the stores. It is possible that we (or somebody) would have to pay shipping there and back again if a Secret Keeper gets chipped or scratched. That would be pretty expensive, for a thirty-two pound dragon.
We would love to lighten her up first. That would also save the poor painter’s back who lifts those things. (Guess who’s)
The other problem with a big piece like this, is that she takes a month to dry! They would take up alot of space in the drying area.

Yeah. I-m just curious to see how the dragon-s skin looks, inside out, so to speak. I-m mostly interested in seeing a pic of the scratcher-s mold, how you get around his front leg that-s standing on his tail and all that.

You still looking for the apostrophe?

Its really neat to see what the molds look like! Its amazing how they can reproduce the fine details so well.

I think the only way to put pictures in the posts is to paste the link from a site like Photobucket.I’m using Snapfish, and there isn’t an obvious way to link pics from it, that I can see.Does anyone else use that one? Photo bucket is easier to link to, but because they allow anybody to view and print your images, I stopped using them for Windstone, and art pics.

Now I know Windstones are painted with acrylic and I’m assuming it’s a special kind of acrylic made for airbrushing. My question to Melody (or anyone!) is about the shimmery quality of dragons – how is that achieved? Is there a brand you buy that comes that way or is it something you have to add to normal colours? I recall in another thread you mentioned that the ruby colour is made from automotive paint.

I know acrylic can come in shimmery shades in the Interference category but I’ve noticed that they seem to be light regardless of the colour so that when you put them overtop of other paint, the shimmer is more pearly-related than a darker, jewel tone, if you know what I mean?

What I really want to know is whether it’s possible for someone to get the kind of glowing emeralds and deep blues you get, when we are painting our PYOS, if there’s a trick or a certain kind of paint we would need.

Sorry this is such a rambly question LOLWe use Golden acrylics. They come in all kinds of metalics and interferance colors. Our colors are usually a mixture of several of these, plus pigments…We spend a lot of time formulating these perfectly, and I don’t even remember what is in most of them. You can approximate these colors yourself, or better yet, come up with new ones, by mixing and experimenting with the metallics that are available from Golden and Liquitex. They are great paints.
The Ruby color is much trickier. It is achieved by carefully airbrushing the transparent red over layers of metallics and other colors. It may not look it, but that color took a long time to perfect!
