My recommendations when wondering what Mel is up to, is keeping a close eye on the forum π She’s very good about telling us what she is working on (Currently there is a GB batch of baby poads being worked on) it’s just spotting where she mentions it at.. even topics that don’t seem relevant may hold answers to questions, as threads often wander off topic! lol… at least this usually works with GB’s and new sculpts π The surprise ones tend to be production line of sculpts that are already out π and single ebay pieces…
Also, since this is a brand new sculpt… I wouldn’t worry too hard about missing them, usually they paint them in several different colors back to back when they’re Production line, so you get a good feel for everything once the first set has released…
As for them being GB or not.. I could be off here, as I was mostly lurking once in a while when I remember seeing this.. but last I heard, the MK’s were the GB dragons, and the “Hoarder” (or whatever he gets named) was meant to be production π Not saying Mel won’t do GB Hoarders, but I would more-so expect production colors…
Though I don’t remember if anything was ever mentioned if MK’s were going to be painted in production colors? I recently got one, and if one ever comes out in Blue Morpho, I’m going to be done in! lol..
As for planning… once I hear whisper about painting (or thinking of painting) I start saving… if it’s a new sculpt I try to get an idea of how much to save from similar sculpts.. If I had to guess, Hoarder is larger than the baby, right? Baby is $68 and Fledgling is $85 .. so I’d say the Hoarder will probably be around $75.. though you can never know for sure, as it is really all a guessing game until release! Part of the charm of collecting Windstones π hehe
I’m painting gb baby poads Like poison dart frogs at at the moment.
I don’t collect the poad sculpt… but darn it.. Might have to snag one of these, they sound cute!
I’m hoping for a Delayed Grab Bag. π The Arctic Foxes are chewing large holes in my wallet.
Haha.. I kind of feel this… foxes in general have done chewed through my wallet… all that is left now is a chunk of leather that once resembled a wallet sitting in the corner.. covered in foxy drool and tooth marks π
I can only imagine what having a “troop” (I just googled what a large group of foxes is called) of foxes will cause in the chaos department ;p especially with a pack of wolves and a herd of baby unicorns to show them how it’s all done! haha… Ohhh… my poor male uni that watches over most of them, I’m sure he’s wondering what he did in a past life π haha… His only backup is the gargoyle who watches over the wolves…
Might need to move my Emp closer so he can help out! lol πThe adult unicorns are difficult to paint in a fancy way. It is possible, but because of the complicated mane/body attachments, and the fat bodies, making stencils for them is really tough. This is because the stencils need to be constructed out of many parts to fit around the unicorn. This makes them hard to get off and on,too.
Ahh that makes sense.. I had wondered a lil bit on how you do your stencils…
Maybe an ambitious project some day for ebay pieces then πAdorable! I’m loving those color tones, and you did such a great job painting him! π I can’t wait to paint one of the fancy ones myself, though I have no idea what colors to paint, hehe!
Genuine question: Have any PYOs had fitted boxes in the past?
It may be a way to keep the cost of them down.Keepers and PYO Unicorns do for sure… I’m not sure of other larger pieces as I haven’t ordered a Griff or Phoenix…
Given most of my PYO’s are painted to sell (I don’t have near enough space to keep all that I want to paint) I *much* prefer having a fitted box to help assure what I just put a 1-3 months into painting is going to arrive to it’s new home safely.. Things like the Small Dragon and smaller yet pieces don’t bother me not having fitted boxs, the larger ones who have the weight to force themselves to shift and the ones that have limbs that’re easier to break (Foo’s legs) are the ones I’m nervous about…
I have always felt super secure shipping Keepers because their fitted boxes keep them in place, shipping a PYO Uni with a fitted box helps assure the horn won’t get severely messed up… I’d love to see a fitted box for the adult Foo’s to help assure their legs are all ok…I wonder if you got sent a male foo’s pad by mistake? They are very close in shape but not exactly the same.
I sort of wondered the same, unfortunately I didn’t have time to have the right one sent to me as my Foo was needing to go to her new home..
Also, why not use the same inset stamp that’s on the bottom of the Keeper in the larger base of the foo’s? Instead of on a foot? Could cut the pads the same way as the Keepers, the stamp is in the sculpt and would probably leave more room for signing the pads, as the plaster inset is smaller than the felt pad stamp… Just a thought.
The inset stamp needs to be placed into the mold so that there is room around it to pour the gypsum. There wasn’t room in the foo dogs smaller base to both place the inset stamp and have room on a pad to stamp the logo, if there was a hole in the pad. Thats why we just put a “W” mark on the paw.
– then we decided the pads didn’t really need holes anyway.Gotcha π
I loooove the brown one! One of my favorite picks! Both your foxes are absolutely lovely! Great grab!
Thank you! I never would have thought I would have gotten one of the Mahogany colored ones.. the morning before I picked these guys up I was looking over the class photos and saw her and had the thought that I wouldn’t at all mind finding her in a box, lol π I do like her more than I expected to though! Which honestly a good handful of my faves I’ve seen out of this batch are ones I didn’t expect to like so much, though my original top picks have stayed high on my list as well.. Melody did such a wonderful job π
Ah-Ha! Got better photos π
Here is the Silver I got, with his super cute lil face!
I love that his “eyebrows” are so much lighter, gives him the look of a Raccoon face XD So he’s been nicknamed “Coon” … He is up for trade, though I won’t be absolutely heart broken if he doesn’t go anywhere..and here is the one that surprised the bajeesus out of me π
This pretty lil lady still didn’t photograph quite right, so I have her class photo added too (Truer colors than the outdoor photo, as her lighter tones look yellow in the photo when they’re not)
I will consider trades on her… but I’m not actively looking to trade her, if that makes sense? There are a couple foxes that I would strongly consider trading for though… Feel free to make offers, I promise I don’t bite π Just please understand if I’m not interested in trading πI still have my previously posted Fire and Ice fox up for trades as well π

The hole in pads is almost always wonky, my guess there is the stamp in the Windstones doesn’t always lands exactly right, I nearly always have to recut to get it right, especially on Keepers, and some of those recuts can be pretty big pieces… but the overall shape is usually right to fit on the bottom of a Windstone and not overrun the sides, this wasn’t the case with the Foo Moms pad, it was all around the wrong shape and size…
Mine also did not have the hole in the pad for the stamp on the foot… which confuses me, if it is meant to just get covered, why put it on the Windstone at all? I’m glad I didn’t paint the lil emblem like I thought about doing originally… just an added lil touch, I would have been disappointed to cover it and would have had a hard time trying to cut it out of the padAs for unicorn colors. What about dark rose pink with black mane and tail? Dark pink with black is a nice color combo.
The issues with unicorn colors: The mane and tails being a separate distinct color is much more difficult to paint. If the body color and mane/tail color are very different, the manes and tails need to be hand painted with a brush to make them look nice. I got away with airbrushing the m/ts on the Grullas, because the body color was similar, so a little overspray didn’t show too much.
A color scheme with a lighter mane and tail is even more difficult. Light paint hand brushed over dark airbrushed paint looks yucky, unless you take a ton of time to do it.This is ok for ebay or special pieces, but not production.
White, black, solid purple, and stuff like that, is best.
Blue or red roan is a possibility, because roans are splotchy. Pintos are a possibility, though they require some stenciling … appaloosas maybe…Ohh, I like the idea of a dark pink with black markings, what about a pink variation, more or less, on the grullas? Darker points to help the black mane/tail… I especially love the way the Silver Grullas manes/tails look where there is a lil bit of their body color faded into the manes/tails…
I like when there is depth, detail and contrast on a piece… I’m not huge on the white uni’s because there isn’t much there to make them stand out above all the rest, and well, I think any Windstone deserves to stand above the rest, the detail in the sculpt alone is remarkable, and I love when the paint on them accents that detail instead of downplays it…
I have a white male uni, and the only time he stands above anything else in my collection, is when he is placed next to a stone finished gargoyle… but if I place him right next to my Silver Grulla male, it’s hard to tell they’re even the same sculpt, to a degree…
Just my .02 anyway…How hard would it be to do a LP run of lichen patterns? I’m assuming they’re a stencil for the most part? I know a ton of people would go straight gaga for those! Depending on the colors, I know I’d love em!
Mine has been getting updated here and there π I put an “Updated on XX” date on mine when I update it…
I got this pretty lil one π photos of my other one didn’t turn out great, so I’ll take photos later (when the sun is up! Silly early bird bf, he’s always awake before dawn, and thus sometimes so am I lol)
As cute as this one is, I will be looking for a trade for a different red fox π
This one is all grey, the reddish tones you may see is reflection… ‘n has the cutest lil white tipped tail, you can see it in the photo of his (her?) back.
Sorry if the photos are large/iffy, I’m doing all of this from my phone, I’ll get better photos of both foxes later π
