Cat had an excellent birthday and we’re both ready to go now! I just bought some various paints this morning (I was a little low on my usual colors, I think I’ve been painting more than usual, and I needed some interference paint).
I think I’m going to get some better photos of these guys all blank before painting, but I’m hoping to get a base coat on mine this afternoon!
Yeah, I would be inclined to stick with paint on sculptures as well, as the paints don’t have brush tips, and getting into fine cracks and crevasses just doesn’t seem like it would go well. They might work for dry brush kinds of work, but how they’d hold up in the long run I’m not sure.
I use different varieties of leafing paint pens in a number of the paintings I do, I love them for big swaths of shiny things (I use smaller metallic pens for fine details sometimes too), though they definitely don’t look quite like leaf OR paint. I’m not sure how they’d do on sculpture.
The downside with the bigger pens is that fine details are difficult, usually the kinds with better quality ink are push feed style pens and I find it’s hard to get a consistent line with them. This is why I generally use them over large areas, or areas I will distinctly outline. Then again, that’s just my taste in what I make.
They don’t really scan worth a dickens (or at least show how nice they look in person) but they work to my taste, here are a couple examples of how I use them:
Personally, I and my partner love to use them, but we’re both kind of specific about how we use them. I do sometimes use just gold paint for things as well, and while I haven’t ponied up for gold leaf, I can see where I’d like to use it, but if you want more gold-like effects and options (or copper or silver) they’re great. They also seem to last pretty well too, not endless by any means, but I’m only on my second gold pen after several paintings and drawings with large filled gold areas.
Oh man awesome! I’m envious, I’d love to be back in theater again, ah well, sounds like this is a good gig!
July 6, 2014 at 4:10 am in reply to: Featherwurm's Thread of Miscelaneous Art and Creative Foibles (New Art 8/4) #915251Agh, I’m still sitting on so much stuff that needs photographing and scanning. I don’t even know where to begin. Ah well… here is a new thing to look at:
From the same world as the orca fellow above:
“The sickness that made the so called ‘flight-afflicted’ left them violent, wild, and unpredictable, but also gave them the tools to survive in the blighted landscape. While some could retain more of their mind and mentality (particularly those already suffering physical and mental afflictions and used to their pains), cases varied so much as to leave all flighted in danger of a violent demise for the sake of safety. Generally solitary, their raids on human populations and their tenancy to pick off lone travelers and even caravans makes travel difficult at best. Their bodies, stretched vastly into a configuration built for stamina and agility in the air still leaves them vulnerable to drowning, and they come into little conflict with merfolk. Those in early stages of affliction are at risk for execution to protect the human population, though some families are known to have smuggled their sick loved ones into the wild, or stay with them far beyond the point of safety.”

Now that’s torture…
Ahhh YAY! Torture for all of us too!
Now WE will also have to wait to see what you guys paint! 😀GOOD LUCK! Can’t wait to see how your PYOs come out. 🙂
Hah, and quite a wait indeed. A couple busy weeks at work are keeping me distracted but I just can’t wait to begin!
We should be able to start some time next week, you guys are all so fantastic in your encouragement, thank you all!
June 29, 2014 at 10:26 pm in reply to: Featherwurm's Thread of Miscelaneous Art and Creative Foibles (New Art 8/4) #914898They’re pretty cute, and I’d love it if they had some kind of… background story for what they’re supposed to be/how they came to be. Individual profiles or personalities might be cute too. I think I could probably shell out the money for one for 18 or so. 🙂 Seems reasonable to me anyway.
Ah yes, I’ll definitely do little cards to go with them with some background… just need to come up with it!
Thank you again!
June 29, 2014 at 3:14 am in reply to: Featherwurm's Thread of Miscelaneous Art and Creative Foibles (New Art 8/4) #914878Hi all, I’m sorry I seem to still be coming up rather shy about posting in various forums. I think of replies but then just have the hardest time hitting that post button.
No worries, you are not alone, I do this all the time… in fact, several times in your thread!
I love those little wood critters, they remind me of Moon Baby. My Great Grandpa found Moon Baby in his backyard, she was a piece of wood that looked like some sort of alien animal baby. Sadly she is long lost now, I never had a chance to rescue her after my great grandparents passed away.
I would definitely be interested in one of those little guys.
I’m glad I’m not. I need to work on that… I really appreciate you replying!
Hah, that sounds quite fantastic. I have a small stick that looks very much like a snake (the small knots in it are in just the right place for eyes, mouth, and nostrils. Pity it is lost, but nature is full of wonderful things.
I think I’m going to have to give these guys their own real due, and set them up with stories and such.
June 28, 2014 at 1:42 am in reply to: Featherwurm's Thread of Miscelaneous Art and Creative Foibles (New Art 8/4) #914838Wow, those last three things, what are you calling them? They kind of have a whimsy that makes me think of something out of a Studio Ghibli film. I actually really kind of like them… how much would you want for one, out of curiosity?
Thank you!
I’m still sort of mulling on that but I’m thinking something like ‘Wood Walkers’ or ‘Mosslings’ still a bit up in the air on that one.
I’d probably be asking something like $18 or so, they’re small but a bit fiddly to do, and a little more detailed than what I usually do at that size. If that seems a fair number, it’s always tricky pricing.

I’ve been feeling pretty inspired of late, I have more in the works that isn’t ready to show yet, but here’s a variety of things:
Sharpie sketch, I wanted to do something with a critter with poofy pants with tiny attached boots. I find that stylistic quirk very charming, though it’s not innate to the way I usually work.

A father's day card for my dad, he loves to sail.
Last of the little ‘felt eyes’ style vintage creatures for now. These little goats are also up on Etsy.
Found these little ones roaming around the yard, they seem pretty friendly.
(They would probably like more permanent homes, is this something anyone would be interested in?)
That’s it for the moment I think, I have more sketches and art to share, but that’s probably a long enough post for now.
Do you guys use kijiji much in the U.S.? It’s super popular up here! I have seen lots of Windstones from different parts of Canada on kijiji. I buy and sell a variety of things on there. It’s really good for finding furniture on there too like bookcases and curio cabinets for Windstones!
Interestingly, Kijiji isn’t available in the same way in the US as Canada. Here’s it’s the E-bay Classifieds, and it’s not really as popular as Craig’s List by a long shot.
There was actually a whole legal kerfluffle between Craig’s List and E-bay (owners of Kijiji) which didn’t really do much for anyone, but did result in Kijiji being dropped in the states.
It’s great if you’re in Canada to be sure! Far better than Craig’s List there, just the popularity is switched between them for the two countries.
June 13, 2014 at 3:08 am in reply to: Featherwurm's Thread of Miscelaneous Art and Creative Foibles (New Art 8/4) #914078Thank you very much! I’m hoping to do a few more related images, and do something (perhaps written) to tell the full story (just what I need, another writing project… hah)
June 11, 2014 at 11:50 pm in reply to: Featherwurm's Thread of Miscelaneous Art and Creative Foibles (New Art 8/4) #914003I’ve got a few new critters up in my Etsy store. I’m really pleased with these little guys, though I know the style isn’t to everyone’s taste. After one more batch of them I’ll be doing more fantasy oriented stuff.
Vintage Polka Dot Giraffe Available Here
Vintage Green Scale Kirin Available Here
For the more fantasy oriented portion of today’s art, I finished up this watercolor a while back
He’s a fellow from a dream a while back. ‘Humanity’ at the brink of collapse had split into three subgroups through various means, the humans, the flight-afflicted, and the merfolk. While once a hope of the last bastion of human thought, the merfolk had long since distanced themselves from land-dwelling humans and were considered little more than a food source. This unfortunate one seems to have captured someone’s attention and is being kept for entertainment.
I think that’s a good update for now! There’s always more it seems like, but this is all ready to share.
Spectacular! And what a lovely garden too!
Excellent idea! I love the green touch in the nostrils, just perfect!
