Safire_blue – Thank you! The rock gave me some trouble because I’ve never been super great at drybrushing, but it seemed to be the best technique to make it look natural. I painted the rock a very dark grey first. After it dried completely, I used an older, blunt brush with stiffer bristles and drybrushed different colors on top of that. If I wanted an area to be more solidly colored, I would push a bit harder with the brush (but still not too hard! I wanted that grey to show through on the cracks). When I wanted to do highlights on an area I’d use a very, very light hand, barely dragging it over the area I wanted highlighted (always remembering to make sure the paint I was brushing over was completely dried!). You may have to do this several times, but it’s worth the effect! And one thing that seemed to work good for me was a technique that I remember from when I used to use colored pencils a lot – which is to basically try not to move your brush in the same direction every time you go over something, but go at it from different angles, or small circles. The caveat to this is that you don’t want to push very hard or you run the risk of getting too much paint on the piece where you don’t want it! Hope this helps π
Meowmix – That’s great! Knowing how beautifully you did your last unicorn, I’m hedging my bets that your dapples will turn out better than mine! π
Thanks for the tips! Much appreciated! I will be keeping this all in mind as I paint! π
268 Windstones! Holy moly! So envious! π
First saw a Windstone when shopping with my Mom maaaaaany years ago. It was a white male Pegasus. Both of us were just floored with the beauty and detail of the sculpture, and I knew we weren’t leaving without it. We ended up going halfers on it, and she has custody of it. She would have never bought it for herself, and I get as much visitation as I want. π
Welcome!
Thank you! π
Hello and welcome, fellow Canadian! Which part of Canada are you in? I’m in Calgary, Alberta. I get the low dollar right now but it’s hard to wait on it to change in order to buy some of the pieces on here! I just usually sell some things if I want to buy new ones so they are all in US dollars anyway. If you like painting pyos and you are an artist you could probably make some money selling them too although sometimes it’s nice to paint them for yourself too or to give them away to friends or family as gifts! What kind of artwork do you do or what do you like to draw or paint? I myself would like to do more pyos as I have only painted a couple so far. Maybe when I save more I will get a bunch and make myself paint them. I just sometimes get nervous and find reasons not to paint thinking my work won’t be good enough but I am trying to get over that because I love art and drawing and painting too!
Hi and Thanks! You’re in Calgary? I envy the temps you’ve had. I’m in Manitoba, or as I call it, “Manitscolda”. π
It’s unlikely that I’ll do any PYO’s to sell, at this time I’m pretty happy to embark on this new adventure for my own pleasure and also for gifts. I’ve done artwork since I was a little kid, fascinated with the paintings my mom did. My work is done mostly in pencil, colored pencil, pastel, or most often, a mixture of a few mediums. Some favorite subjects include horses, unicorns, dragons, big cats, and muscle cars. I loooove cars.
Thanks for the welcome! π
Thanks for the welcome! π The avatar…well I’m a bit of a nutbar, so it suits me. π
I’d certainly post pics of the horsy-fish once I’m done with him, but it might be awhile! I’m still deciding what color he’ll be…gathering the necessary items to begin…etc. I’m worse than a parent planning for a birth, I guess. π I’m excited and scared to death. Agggh!
Your work on these sculptures is fantastic. Love the colors and blending techniques you use. Beautiful job! I love the work you did on the hippocampus base, the colors in the rocks and other details. Any tips you can pass along to someone about to tackle this same PYO? I’d love to get that same realistic effect in the rocks. π
It’s not just you. I’m getting it too. For the past few hours. π
Hi, and thank you for the welcome. Still learning my way around. π
