You know, I usually have trouble swallowing personified animals, but when it’s done well, it’s still very enjoyable.
There is an audiotape of LOTR that was read like a radio show… it’s not an exact reading of the book (some parts were cut out here and there), but it was AWESOME. They had a different actor read each character. I think the guy who played Bilbo in the Jackson movies was the guy who did the voice for Frodo–dude, what’s his name? I am having a serious brain fart here. Anyway, it’s just a joy to listen to, and Gollum is the BEST.

I was not quite fond of the end. Bway, number 2 is out, Tintenblut (Inklbood, Inkspell was Tintenherz in German AKA Inkheart).
hmmm… must try audios, I liked them as a kid but at some point I got a really horrible example that imprinted into my brain/ears and made me stop trying it. Gonna check audible 🙂I thought they translated Tintenblut to Inkspell? I remember someone mentioning that somewhere, that it was odd how they changed the name… especially since Inkblood would be a way cooler title. I could be wrong though. Hehe.
Also, Vantid! You listened to the Abhorsen trilogy??? Just the other day I was asking you about it and you said you hadn’t! Tsk…
SPark wrote:Birth of the Firebringer (which is QUITE original, while still having a very classic fantasy plotline) was written when the author was young, though published later on. It’s one of my favorite books ever. Not very long, but very interesting. And the sequels are pretty good too.
Fantastic. I’ll get that one next time I need something to read! (There’s a pile stacked up here, it’s threatening to take over my desk…) It sounds neat, and there’s a UNICORN on the cover! That’s a must-buy if I ever saw one. “Don’t judge a book by its cover”-crap be darned! 😀
Wow! That’s a lot of dragons. And each one is unique, too… awesome! I really like the second one on the page, “The Blue-Eyed Dragon”. He’s got character.
Good luck with your dragon goal!
Hehee! I don’t know the tune, but it’s a lovely adaptation.

finish writing my novelSigh… that was my resolution last year, and I never did it. Instead I started another one. D’oh!
My resolution is to not make any resolutions.
Arlla wrote:(I think they stayed away from the elves and dwarves so that they weren’t TOO close to LOTR…that’s my theory anyway. Love-intrest did sort of smack of Arwen as it was.)
You know, you’d think he would have given Eragon and Arya different names. I mean… ARAGORN. ARWEN. They’re the same names AND the same sub-plot. But then again, it might just be a nod in Tolkien’s direction. “I really liked your story, so I’m going to write my take on it…”
littleironhorse wrote:Anyway, have you read any of the Sword and Sorceress books edited by Marion Zimmer Bradley? She always has a little bio of the author before each short story and she has published A LOT OF very young authors!
Oh oh oh! No, I haven’t. I will have to read them; but speaking of other published young authors, how many of them are out there? Paolini’s the only really famous one… but there *must* be other people who have published novels early on in their lives, no? I remember there was one kid who wrote a picture book about sea otters or something, she was like 12… that was all the rage for a while. Anyway. I’ll look out for Sword and Sorceress books. Maybe I’m weird, but I really enjoy reading author bios…
Ahaha! BUNNY!
Oh my goodness. That is horrible to hear… I’m sorry.
Keep us updated…

I wouldn’t so much judge an author by their age, but I would say it is a factor, not of good or bad writing, but simply of substance. Really he might be an amazing 15 years old writer, but he only has the life experience of a 15 year old.
You can’t communicate what you haven’t lived. And, no offence to all the young people on the forum, many of you may have gone through a lot of things by the time you got to 15, but there is still so much more to experience emotionally, intellectually, physically and nothing but time will give you that experience.
So what I’ll say is, I haven’t read this book, I will read it, and I’m sure I will enjoy it very much.
Ah… That is true. Very true. What I meant is that it’s not all THAT much harder for teenagers to write books than adults–I mean, other than experience-wise. But then in the fantasy genre I don’t think that matters as much as it does in other areas… although inexperience could be the reason Paolini’s writing is so cliche and full of Mary Sue-isms, certainly. Eh. It’s still not a bad book.
By the way, sorry if I offended anyone… I’m good at coming off as anal and over-opinionated when it comes to things like this. 😀 I’m only ranting cause it’s FUN.
sunhawk wrote:SPark wrote:Well, I think the hate for it is in reaction to the people who are all “ZOMG! Best book ever! Wow!” about it. I read it, it was readable. I liked some bits.
I think that’s correct, that a lot of people are almost responding to the fans of the book more than the book itself, in some ways *chuckle* I didn’t mind reading the book, even after my brush with awkward writing on the second page heh heh
Yeah… which is precisely why I want to be on the book’s side, now. Or just remain neutral. It WAS honestly a decent book! Crappier things have been published, but you don’t hear people complaining so much about them, because there’s a smaller fanbase. Yeah. I forget what my point was.

littleironhorse wrote:How young is he exactly?
Paolini was supposedly 15 when he finished Eragon… He’s like 23 or something now. Honestly, I wasn’t impressed by Eragon (the book). There are a lot of 15 year-olds who could do that. Just look around the net, for goodness sakes!
It was a fun story to read, though. I enjoyed it, and would probably read it again–might have to, since I need to analyze a book for school and would totally love to bash Eragon into the ground, as it would give me loads of subject matter. Wheee.
*krrrhm*, but anyway. As for the movie, I want to see it. Just so I can complain loudly about the Eragon actor being blonde. HE IS SO NOT BLONDE IN THE BOOK. Aaarrrg. Drives me nuts. >_> (Maybe we can go see it this weekend, eh Vantid?)
Here is a really, really stupid (although by you people’s standards it’s probably genius…Kiddinnggg 😆 ) parody of the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DBUW7o1lPI I laughed. I’ll admit it.
Even though I understand where all the hate for Eragon comes from, there’s so much of it that I think I’ll be in an “I love Eragon” state of mind until I see the movie… When I was reading the book I was full of complaints about it, but to be honest, it’s just not THAT bad (even if it is derivative and the writing isn’t great). For those of you who haven’t read it yet, I’ll say that it’s worth it, just so you can complain about it. You know? Hehe. Anyway. I’m done talking everyone’s eyes out… sorry… XD
Whoa! I have not heard of these! Interesting… I’ll have to look into checking them out. Has Naomi Novik written anything else?
From the pictures that griffin is just GORGEOUS.
Wow. Remind me to never offend a chipmunk.
