December 31, 2007 at 6:23 pm #596088So I’ve been thinking more and more about my idea of doing birthstone inspired kirins and offering them on the forum each month, but I’m having a hard time deciding what color to do the fur on the Kirins. I don’t want to do them all the same with white or black fur. I made some mock-ups on the computer yesterday and even then had a hard time coming up with colors. Right now here is my idea for the Garnet Kirin (January’s Birthstone).
In case you want a peek at the others:
Amethyst for February
Aquamarine for March
Diamond for April I plan using lots of interference on the scales to bring out the shimmer you see looking at a diamond. Also I noticed that Folk Arts paints has a “Diamond” Gems Paint that I might pick up and try out.
Emerald is for May
Alexandrite is for June I plan on putting some green interference on the scales, since most photos I see of alexandrite make it seem to have a green shimmer with the purple.
Ruby for July
Peridot for August
Sapphire for September
Pink Tourmaline for October
Citrine for November I haven’t settled on Bright Yellow eyes or Orange Eyes.
Blue Topaz for DecemberI chose not to do Pearl for June and Opal for October because those would be very similar. Also by doing the gemstone it gives me different colors.
December 31, 2007 at 6:38 pm #596089Very nice for garnet!!! (That’s my birthstone!!) 😉
December 31, 2007 at 6:46 pm #596090I’m going to TRY and get Garnet’s scales to look like this:
December 31, 2007 at 7:08 pm #596091The Pomegranet seeds are a very pretty color! I like your idea for birthstone Ki-Rins, I started my own set back in April. I am slowly working along on them, and I haven’t been in a hurry to finish them. I had the same idea, but with the use of Ebay to sell them, not the forums. I like your idea of using the stones instead of pearl or opal though. 😀 I hope they are a smashing success for you!! 😀
December 31, 2007 at 7:43 pm #596092I’m hoping I can pull the seed look off on the Kirin. The color is almost perfect for what I see in my head. That or I’ll pull out my grandmother’s garnet ring I inherited and try to match its color. I figure I’ll offer them up on the forum first and then if no one bites, take them to eBay.
December 31, 2007 at 8:42 pm #596093That will be very cool… and difficult!
Love the idea! Can someone clue me in on the devious plan? I missed it 😥
December 31, 2007 at 8:45 pm #596094The devious plan was for forum members to paint kirins for Melody since she collects them. The kirins were sent to Dracomancer who delivered them to the factory earlier this month. One or two forum members didn’t finish their kirins in time to send them to Dracomancer so they will be shipped to the factory directly.
December 31, 2007 at 10:11 pm #596095Bummer I missed it. I would have sent her one.
I guess it’s never too late!January 1, 2008 at 2:41 pm #596096Awww I love the daffodil ki rin. Very well done.
THe birthstone idea is a good one. I dont know about black fur… Black is so dark. Its gonna be hard to find a color that would look good with all of them. Maybe a gold or silver?
January 1, 2008 at 5:07 pm #596097I don’t know. As long as the scales are shiney metalic, black would be okay.
January 1, 2008 at 5:42 pm #596098I’m going to do my best to have metallic scales. I even found something you can mix in with your paint to make it look metallic/pearlescent even if it isn’t. The black fur right now is only for the diamond kirin so the scales will stand out from the fur. I might do a brown on that one though.
January 7, 2008 at 1:08 am #596099While I am waiting for my next order of paint your owns (the kirin for garnet and a griffin) to arrive I finished up on the last of the dragons I got last year to be a gift for a friend. I wanted to finish it in time for Christmas, but with me being away from home the later half of November until the middle of December it didn’t happen. Unfortunately it’s dark here so I can’t take good pictures (lighting in my house SUCKS) so you all will have to wait until tomorrow to see him.
