OK 11 pages to catch up on!!! I was training with a co worker yesterday so I ddi not get a change to log on here for very long.
Well I totally agree that we live in a sad world where quantity has taken the place of quality. I used to also collect Franklin Mint Dragons but their entire line has turned to CRAP. They used to offer work by Michael Whelan and Julie Bell. I have a HUGE FM collection of dragons as well as my Windstoned. I decided I was goingot get quality. I’m very glad I made that choice too. All my friends that come over are beyond impressed with the dragons I have.
I wish all the artists out the all teh best.
As for the 23KT Gold Leaf OW and 23KT Gold hatching Empresses that I have the quality is unmatched anywhere. I was taken back when I opened the OW. He is one of the nicest looking dragons I have ever seen and that includes my army of Emperors. I did not expect him to be as large or heavy as he is. Vantid also said the Gold Leaf does not cost much but it’s a pain to deal with. I’m sure it took a lot of hours to complete him. It sounds like a number of days. I think the $1400 I paid was well worth it. part of the reason I got him was becasue I had the money and I really wanted a OOAK. After 18 years of collection that seemed to be the only thing I was missing.
All 3 of my Gold Leaf ones where worth it to me and if I ever NEEDED to sell them since they are so special it sounds like i would at least get a fair price for them.
But one person also told me once that the value of an item is however much another person would pay ou for them. I bought them because I wanted them fro my own personal collection I never even thought abotui the resale value at the time.I also wonder sometimes what all of you would have said about me last winter if this forum had been active when I got my 3 gold Leaf ones???

I’m totally non-artistic — I think my PYO’s would scare people! Hmm…maybe I could sell them as gargoyles… 😆

I tell you, Mimi, they’re awesome fun, and the $30 are a steal compared to other sculpts. Do try!
Ski, how on earth could you paint one of these in an hour? It took me longer to put the base coat on Xerxes!December 30, 2006 at 4:56 pm #520724mimitrek wrote:skigod377 wrote:Thank you, Guys. Stuff and nonsense. If it really goes down the tube you can always paint it black and it’ll still look good. Try one!
December 30, 2006 at 4:58 pm #520727I was just thinking what if the winner of the copper plated gryphon is not a Forum member?? Will we ever know who won it if they do not announce it here??
December 30, 2006 at 4:59 pm #520728Maybe if we ask very nicely Windstone will tell us? Of course, that nixes half the purpose for private ID.

That is exactly what happened with the one that just sold. I had made such a mess of it, the only way I could salvage it was to paint it black and start over! (I am glad I did!) And you have to start somewhere, Mimi…unless you just dont like to paint?
December 30, 2006 at 5:06 pm #520730You messed it up and it still fetched so much? Cool!

Once I painted it black, it looked fine. I was trying my hand at banded feathers again. Yuk 😕
December 30, 2006 at 5:08 pm #520732Keep trying. 🙂 It’s gotta work sometime.

Some people have no idea what they want, some may have an idea…but what if it does not come out like they picture in their minds? and some just dont want to wait. I hope this does not offend…I am more a shopper than an artist, and that is how I feel. If I had not met Water or Arlla in this forum first, I doubt I would have bid on their auctions because of the above stated reasons… I am glad I did, though! I also try to leave feedback that talks about their art as opposed to packing, just so that others know its worth it.
That’s absolutely true! Even as an artist myself, I tend to purchase completed pieces of art more than I do commissions, because I’m terribly picky. When I do commission an artist, then I know their work well and am confident the outcome will please me because I already enjoy the body of their work. 🙂 However, I recognize and appreciate that commissioned pieces will almost always be more costly, because an artist has to tailor their talent and labor to my vision (which, as an artist, most of the time is okay but sometimes people want some weird/complicated/nitpicky stuff!!).
I agree with everything that you guys said. So far I’ve only bought completed artwork because I know if I like something when I see it, but its hard for me to visualize how I want something to look. And I also wouldn’t commission something unless I’d already seen and like a lot of that artist’s work. So if I were to commission a PYO at some point, I would definitely commission it from someone on this forum and not a random person on Ebay…

If its a member, I am almost positive we will hear about it from the member herself! If its not a member, then I guess, (To me) it does not really matter who it went to. Our baby will be out of the fold… 😥

We would have wondered one: What does he do that he was so much money to spend on collectables, and two: Why did he get two of the same sculpt?
