I think the problem with commisioned auctions for custom work is not that people dont think its worth it, its that lots of folks just want to see an end item and decide if they like it, and bid accordingly. Some people have no idea what they want, some may have an idea…but what if it does not come out like they picture in their minds? and some just dont want to wait. I hope this does not offend…I am more a shopper than an artist, and that is how I feel. If I had not met Water or Arlla in this forum first, I doubt I would have bid on their auctions because of the above stated reasons… I am glad I did, though! I also try to leave feedback that talks about their art as opposed to packing, just so that others know its worth it.
December 30, 2006 at 11:21 am #520707I have to agree with what Ski said. I think it’s easier for most people to say, “I would spend $125 on that finished griffin” rather than “paint me a griffin that’s worth $125”. My honest advice to the artists is to sell painted pyos instead of commissioning the work, unless they are dealing with people that can appreciate the time and effort that will be put into their piece. I am an oddball – I like saying to an artist, “I have X amount to spend. Create something for me in that price range”. Or, “This is my idea, do it and let me know what it costs”. The people that haggled with Water should be ashamed of themselves! I hope they are lurkers and read this. $30 plus shipping for the pyo, plus the materials to paint it, then the time and effort to paint it, then the cost of shipping it to the recipient. Add it up. Most people would be unhappy with minimum wage – are the artists any different? If you want a $20 paint job on a pyo, do it yourself! 🙄 Sorry, I know I’m ranting, but this issue really gets to me and I’m not even an artist.
December 30, 2006 at 2:11 pm #520708Unfortunately, we live in a ‘made in china’ world, where everything is made by poor people who get tons less than minimum wage, thus allowing prices to remain low….the average person probably has no idea how much time and effort goes into a handmade/handpainted item…I do cross stitch…I would never be able to make a living at it…considering the hours that go into one piece, it would have to be outrageously priced…anyway, for PYO’s for the general market, I agree with Ski and lamortefille, sell the finished piece rather than the commission and price it to include your efforts…I think some of our artists way underate their abilities….as for commissions, they are best appreciated by groups like ours that have some idea of the effort that goes into them….
December 30, 2006 at 3:59 pm #520709Going off on an old tangent, but a huge congrats on the $201 Nirvana’s giving you for your PYO dragon, Ski! I bet you never expected that!

Lawd! No I sure didnt! Thank you! I am giving her a nice discount and chocolate and free shipping. I am sooo happy! I hope she likes them, though. That is always my worry, since I have the return policy. I like them…
December 30, 2006 at 4:11 pm #520711They look great in the pictures. Somehow I doubt she’d have bid that high if she didn’t know she’d like them. 🙂
December 30, 2006 at 4:22 pm #520712True. Her man liked them so she wanted to get them for him. That is a great gf!
December 30, 2006 at 4:26 pm #520713She just better not tell Louis how much she spent on them, if he already frowned at her for the BEP SK. 🙂
December 30, 2006 at 4:27 pm #520714I have never met either of them, but somehow, I think Nirvana can take him if it comes down to it!
December 30, 2006 at 4:27 pm #520715I wouldn’t doubt that for a minute!

Congrats from me too! You work has gotten really good. I think that’s one of the highest prices for PYO’s that we’ve seen on Ebay so far! 😀
December 30, 2006 at 4:39 pm #520717Aside from Nam’s, yeah!
December 30, 2006 at 4:45 pm #520718True…I should’ve said “non-Windstone PYO’s”… 🙂

That’s absolutely true! Even as an artist myself, I tend to purchase completed pieces of art more than I do commissions, because I’m terribly picky. When I do commission an artist, then I know their work well and am confident the outcome will please me because I already enjoy the body of their work. 🙂 However, I recognize and appreciate that commissioned pieces will almost always be more costly, because an artist has to tailor their talent and labor to my vision (which, as an artist, most of the time is okay but sometimes people want some weird/complicated/nitpicky stuff!!).

My art: featherdust.comDecember 30, 2006 at 4:51 pm #520720Thank you, Guys. I am trying to take more time on these guys. I used to do one in a hour or so, but now they take a few days. I really love doing this. I think you should try it, Mimi… Tell her, GB.
