Wow Chris those are all GORGEOUS I absolutely love the kirin one. They look so real hiding away.

The kirin and sun ones you picked are great choices, I mean I like them all but those are the most real. I kind of like the second frog one better only because there is a real frog in the photo with him. And the angle is cute with the huge eyes. But either would be awesome. <3

And yay! for being able to recover the photos. That would have been awful 🙁

Haha. I had taken a picture of my gold curlie in my jewelry box for this. Great minds think alike! XD I’ll scratch that one, since we already have one gold dragon with jewels!

It’s one photo per collector so you should still include it! 🙂

Here’s some of Ptolemy. He has the light brown eyes, and the crystals are brownish redish orange, I have no idea what the official colour is called. 😛

I got some nicer pictures of Ptolemy. He looks pretty much like “Cocoa” on the directory.

            And here’s the gang altogether:

And then I tried to take some photos of the little spots I was rambling about. I noticed similar spots on Honeydew and Adagio so I’m not sure it’s interference powder or just spiffs of paint.

            Brown ones on the nose

            Blue ones on the coat

And more of the nose. You can see the little cast defect too.

The more I look at him the more I love him! He’s probably going to stay with me, at least for now <3

Don’t worry hannah! I took it as you just bringing up a discussion point, not complaining or anything.

I think what John meant when he said the price increase was for all the time melody put in them, was the increased detail. I guess that was my original point, that even the more boring colours from the new batch are much more detailed with shading, blending, hoof colours, nostril colours, etc. Even the with the stencil, the outline of the spots has still been gone over with a brush. I think the later batches of normally coloured unicorns had this type of detail too but it would be harder to split those batches among collectors. Like hey these are both bay pintos, but one was from the $130 batch. This new batch is more recognizable as fantasy with the interference paint.

And this is totally unrelated to the price thing, but do they use actual paint for the interference or do they use mica powders like jacquard pearl ex or something similar? Violet hardly had any iridescence so I couldn’t tell, but Ptolemy has little gold speckles all over the white parts in random places. At first they just looked like paint that had sprayed over. But maybe they’re powder? Then on his body there is blue speckles and smudges that look like powder. I’m just curious, I’ve always used pearl ex and it never occurred to me that you could get interference paint for cheaper or that worked as well.

Not defending the price hike per se but I have noticed on the newer unicorns they have way fewer flaws in the paint. There is a lot more obvious small brush detail, and the blending is way better. A lot of the old ones, even like Cyprus or Wisteria, it’s very obvious the spots are just done with an airbrush, and they look like airbrush spots rather than painted pinto spots. Sometimes you get the little “holes” where there’s a spot under the airbrush mark that is slightly lighter. A lot of the babies and some of the youngs too have grey or darker highlights on their knees and noses. I noticed especially in the palominos with grey points that the markings are not blended too nicely, and again look obviously done with an airbrush. The new ones don’t seem to have this problem.

However, I think the more recent youngs and babies had fewer flaws than older batches and didn’t cost more. And the new ones do still have little flaws. Ptolemy has little brown flecks of paint on his face, and what looks like a little casting defect on his nose. But I kind of think it gives them character. :/ (edit: so I noticed that all the white patches on him have little gold flecks, maybe it was done on purpose lol)

Anyway, I’m not sure what my point is. I figure, people are willing to pay it and they sell out anyway, so the price increase makes sense that way.

I’ve never heard of these dolls before, but stuff like this always screams “marketing ploy” to me. :/

You know, make the item not only limited but impossible to get on top of it. So you camp out to get one and are disappointed right? So then you want the doll even more, have kids who want them even more, and feel pressure to make your kinds happy, all that. Kind of like all the stuff toy companies do around christmas time, UGH. I mean maybe it was a mistake on disney’s part that their site goes down but I feel like the change from one doll a week, which was working fine, to 5 was just to hike up the pressure.

I got my second one today, he’s pretty awesome. His name is “Ptolemy” which is awesome. Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ptolemy_(name)

Yeah so I’m n00b at history and had no idea. Him and Claudius would make a neat set 😛 I’m also SUPER annoyed because I got charged freaking customs on him! It kind of proves customs really picks and chooses when to charge you. I got violet a few weeks ago and paid nothing, and I got 2 grab bags from a batch ages ago so the price was higher and didn’t get charged. Shenanigans! xD

Pictures! He’s a bald face sabinoey coppey chestnut. These pictures kind of suck and I will try to get nicer ones later.

I like the blending on the spots a lot, there’s black shading on the copper side and especially on the face it’s gorgeous! His body is slightly more purple than the mane, which is very copper. His crystals are dark orange, I dunno what the actual colour is called 🙂

I’m not totally opposed to trading him but am probably going to keep him for now.

So I have a few more yay! I edited my old posts so I just have 3 to enter, might still change things around though. 🙂

I have lots of versions of each photo (and decent photoshop skills) so may adjust things. The angle of the sleigh in the last one bugs me and there’s a tag showing. I might take more that I like between now and the deadline. Maybe some outside! *gasp*

If you are interested in seeing more of the photos I’ve done I’ve posted them on facebook. Here is a link to the album, scroll down to the bottom, I’ve added/ will add outtakes there: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150203953336440.311853.512851439&type=1&l=7130614dbb

We have tried dichroic paint, it shifts between two colors. It doesn’t show up very well indoors on a small piece. I wonder if chameleon paint would even show on a small piece? It seems that most of these fancy paints need a smooth, car sized thing out in the sun to show well.

Car sized windstone? You know you wannnntt to. 😛

Still waiting on mine too. Based on the tracking number info, mine were held up in customs for four days! You’d think they were weapons-grade uranium or something. I bet the customs officials were secretly have a unicorn tea party without me. 😛

Nooooo. If it’s delayed at customs for a long time it usually means you’re going to get a big fat lovely customs fee.

I really want to see nicer pictures of “Metronome” I think he’s from one of the older non-fantasy batches but he’s so gorgeous, love the pintaloosa colour. Whoever traded for him could you post some photos when you get him?

Still waiting on my fantasy unicorn in the mail…should be any day now… 😀
