Your latest flapcat is quite amazing! I love how well you pulled off the orange tabby markings. Just really, really nice work. Kudos!

Okay, so this might sound odd, but I’d like to paint a pyo dragon inspired by a favorite humanoid cartoon character, but I have no idea how to go about it. While I have painted a few things before on canvas and pottery, I’ve never painted a pyo before. I read the tutorial under the PYO info, but I’m still a bit lost because I’m basing colors off a cartoon character vs a living thing like a bird (which for me personally seems like it would be easier to do). My pyo has been sitting naked on my shelf for months waiting for me to figure out a color scheme! Now that I have one, I’m too afraid (naïve actually) to try. I’m not sure what to do so I made a list of a few questions below in a effort to get to the heart of the worry.

        1. Can you use gesso as a base coat on a PYO or is gesso only for canvas?

        2. Should I paint a white base coat on the PYO or layers of the character’s color? Example: If red was one of the characters main colors…should I paint a red base coat, let it dry, then paint another red layer or two to get a full rich red? I will be using Liquitex heavy body acrylic paints.

        3. I don’t think a peach humanoid skin tone will look good on the pyo dragon. It’s easier to get rid of the skin tone on the arms and legs, but how can I get around this problem (mainly on the face/muzzle of the pyo) and still make the PYO look like it was inspired by the character? Am I making sense with this question? :~

These are probably “Well, duh!” questions, but I tend to overthink things and confuse myself.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help.

All advice is with a grain of salt, I’m no expert after all! 🙂

        1. I have never used gesso but as I understand it…it is supposed to be like a primer for surfaces that won’t readily absorb paint (at least originally). PYO Windstones do not need a primer unless you want to limit their paint absorption (which you can do with just a standard base coat of paint). So I wouldn’t suggest using gesso.

        2. Doing a base coat is preference (and depends on your method of painting). For example, when I first started painting, I would put on a base coat of a light version of the color I wanted. That way I could build on top. Because as the paint FAQ has said, it’s simple to go from light to dark and almost impossible to go from dark to light. Now though, I use thin washes to paint so I don’t bother with a base coat at all. There are exceptions though. If you use metallic paints as your main colors you may want a black base coat because that will make the metallics pop out better. Also, it helps to plan out your colors and patterns before hand. Like on a photo or other reference to give yourself a better idea of what to do as you paint.

        3. This question makes perfect sense. I understand what you’re trying to get at. You want a paint scheme inspired by a particular character, but not necessarily copy his/her color scheme exactly/directly onto your PYO. For that you might have to go a bit abstract. Use the colors of his outfit in a pattern that is pleasing to you (maybe only using skin tone for accents if you must use skin tone color). OR you might also take what you know of the character (personality, likes, dislikes etc.) and apply that to the pattern. After all, you want something inspired by the character for yourself. As long as you know and are pleased with the results, it shouldn’t matter if it’s not readily apparent to someone else. Not everyone is going to be as familiar with the character as you are. So it should be something that makes you happy.

As I mentioned on dA, very nice colors! Quite lovely.

Eee! So cute! I have a horrible weakness for cats and kittens. Thank you for sharing the pictures and I hope they get good homes. We’re feeding a couple strays at my place and planning on getting them spayed/neutered too.

Welcome! I wish you great fortune on your upcoming PYO projects! And my sympathies on your fur baby. It’s always hard. But I hope you are enjoying the time in between pets. People who love animals usually can’t stay away for long. 😉

Admittedly I was a big DBZ fan growing up. I.. have any of you watched “DBZ Abridged”? It’s not ‘safe for work’ mostly due to some strong language but it’s seriously my favorite take on the series ever!

Oh my gosh! DBZ Abridged is hilarious! I love it. It’s so irreverent and yet very faithful to the source material! But you’re right. It is definitely ‘NSFW’. Watch at home when kids aren’t around (it has cursing and violence you may not want your kids exposed to).

XD What lovely art! Needle felting is a fascinating medium. I especially like the unicorn. And your acrylic canvas paintings are quite good! Have you considered expanding further into that area?

Are you kidding me. Gargoyles was the best show, ever. It changed my life.

It … okay it seems weird to say that about a cartoon, but IT DID.

Nah, that’s not weird. 🙂 Pretty cool actually and likely not all that uncommon for a cartoon to have made such an impact. Similarly, there’s been stories told of NASA employees heavily influenced by Star Trek. (Another fav. of mine and considering most of the STNG series bridge crew voiced characters in Gargoyles…heck yeah.) I was exposed to art via my mom early in life but oddly (and sadly) enough, Dragon Ball Z is what really got me into art in my pre-teen years, though I have to say now I’m an adult I can’t stand DBZ. It’s like, “Why did I watch this?” *ducks and runs for cover* Sorry DBZ fans.

In my opinion, Gargoyles suffered from the same thing a lot of good cartoons did. It was way ahead of its time. Apparently still is because it remians banned in a small amount of countries. Sad it was a short lived series and I’m still amazed how much more liberal cartoons were back then with blood, guns, and death (of sorts). Geeze Disney, what happened to you? Eh, I could ramble on forever with this subject. Showing some restraint here.

Aw…I picked up DBZ early in college and I still love it (though I much prefer it in the original Japanese). Even picked up on it’s earlier show ‘Dragonball’. T_T Oh well, to each their own. Gargoyles was (and is) an excellent show. It’s also a favorite of mine along with Star Trek. Gargoyles is also finally being released on DVD (at last).

Oh, don’t get me wrong, DBZ is not a bad show. I just grew out of it is all. The graphic novels and the original show (like you mentioned) are much better I bet. It just seemed like most of the episodes they stood around staring at each other and making threats. Maybe that was an English dub problem? IDK. Dragonball was much better than DBZ (IMO) but GT, man that one was terrible…again IMO. So there’s a “new” DBZ movie coming out soon. Thought that was interesting. Not sure if I’ll make an effort to watch it though. Depends.

I ended up investing in the Gargoyles DVD’s seasons 1 and 2 (vol. 1&2). They still haven’t released season 3 I guess? I had no idea they were only “recently” released on dvd. Talk about good timing to revisit the series. I’m happy to watch the show all over again because I honestly do not remember much about it. The last time I watched this show I was like 7 or 8 years old. EEESH. Apparently there’s a few comic books that are a continuation of the Gargoyles story. Might have to invest in those eventually. *shrug*

-laughs- I’m not offended in the slightest! After all, everyone has their own tastes. And with Dragonball Z, you are NOT wrong. There is a saga in the show that is EXACTLY like you describe. Mostly standing around and powering up/glaring at each other/making threats (in the original as well as the dub). The manga is much better paced in that particular saga. And GT…eh…er…sorry, don’t care for that part much either (wasn’t actually written by the creator and we all know how that tends to go ^_^;). What else can I say…GT was questionable. And Dragonball was and is a fun show (IMO). More light-hearted than DBZ. As for the new movie…I’ll wait and see. The previous new movie was…um…not bad, but a bit weird. Almost OOC. -shrugs-

As for Gargoyles, I definitely want to pick up those season box sets. There’s just so much I want to pick up though…I have to pick and choose what goes first. I mean…more PYO Windstones, DVD series or manga? And only enough spare money per month for one thing from my list. -sighs- Lol. Anyways, I wish you luck in getting the comics. I’ve heard they’re pretty good. Hopefully they release the third season of Gargoyles soon too.

And even if you don’t like or care for DBZ now, at least it helped get you more into art. So at least there is that. Which is very cool (IMO). 🙂
