I keep a damp paper towel handy at all times, so as soon as something drips I can wipe it off. Constant vigilance!

(I also try to finish areas separately, e.g. the Kite Griffin in my gallery — I completely painted, antiqued/shaded, and then gloss varnished his feet, despite his feathers not being finished. The gloss varnish makes it easier to wipe off any drips or runs… and if I went a bit over the edges of the feet onto the feathers when painting them, since they’re NOT sealed I can always paint over that area when I start finishing up the feather job.)

Oh, and I also work with insanely small brushes, which (I guess?) helps minimize accidents — they can really get into tiny areas without brushing up against anything they shouldn’t, they hold less paint so they’re less likely to glob or drip, and if I do streak them across something by accident, at least it’s a narrow streak. 🙂 Possible bonus: people see them and go all, ” O.o You did that entire thing with THOSE? You are crazy. And talented!” 🙂

I have a PYO question if the OP doesn’t mind 😳 I keep trying to figure out how people keep one area clean when they are working on something else-like-if you only want to antique the fur of a kirin, how do you keep from messing up your work on the scales? Do people use masking fluid on painted parts of a PYO? Or are all you guys just REALLY good at not ‘straying’ out of where you are painting?

Could you by any chance drop me a link for the downloads? I’ve been intending to download FMA:Br for about two months now, and first I was moving, then I was out of town, and NOW I have forgotten where I put the link, and can’t find it!

I love FMA the original, so I’m excited at the idea of having MORE! 🙂

I didn’t even know they made another version of the series that is currently airing in Japan. I was hoping it left off where the movie ended, but I guess not. They’re really flying through the first story though. They changed a few things, but I wonder how much it will change the further it progresses? Hmm..

If he really is both a HE and a calico, he’s a weirdo! 🙂 (I mean that in a friendly way, honest!) All calico cats are female, because they have to have two X chromosomes to carry the black AND the orange colors. So a calico cat who “is” male actually has two X chromosomes and is genetically female… or has *three* sex chromosomes, XXY.

If you were using “he” as a neutral pronoun, okay; but if you think he’s male, I’d suggest double-checking, because it’s extremely unlikely — odds are about 1/3000, I believe! 🙂

Hey, DragonMaster, I can breed any color stripe you like! (In theory, anyway!) And I’m certainly willing to try, if you want me to. Red? Blue? Green?

If you have any Golds or Silvers and would be willing to try for an egg for me, I’d call that fair. 🙂

I have one “wrong” dragon that I didn’t have the heart to abandon, because I’d already named him; but I’m usually ruthless. 🙂 If they gender wrong, they’re out! Of course, I’m pretty sure they’re not going to die, so that’s part of it — they go to the Abandoned page, and I’ve noticed that hatchlings on there vanish *very* quickly!

What do you guys mix yours with? Do you mix them in with your paints or do you use another medium?

I drybrush mine over a coat of glossy varnish. (Adding a layer of the gloss on top changes the way it looks; so sometimes I do it, sometimes I don’t.) Mostly I do this to the interference colors, but I’ve also done it with Micropearl and Gold.

I have also mixed them with the varnish, which gives a slightly different look. The result varies a lot depending on how concentrated you make it, from almost-unnoticeable to nearly white.

I added Micropearl to white pearl paint to try to give it a more Windstone-y look; not sure if it succeeded, but I do think it made a slight difference…? Maybe that one was just me, though.

In my gallery you can see some examples of how the various methods turned out for me:

                    Drybrushed over varnish:
                    1. The undersides (outsides) of the black and white griffin’s wings — note how faint/dusty the interference is compared to the backs of his wings!
                    2. The interference colors on the wing feathers on “Lauren’s Dragon” are (I’m pretty sure) drybrushed over varnish without a topcoat. The scales above the feathers are Micropearl done the same way.
                    3. The gold edges on the thigh/arm scales of “Laura’s Dragon” — sort of, anyway. They were applied without a layer of varnish underneath; they’re directly on the paint. (They did receive a topcoat of varnish, but I don’t have pictures of them like that!)

Drybrushed over varnish, varnish applied again:
                    1. The back of the black/white griffin’s wings — this is three or four layers of varnish-interference-varnish-interference-varnish-etc. Very strong, very shiny colors.

                    Mixed with varnish:
                    1. The bottom edge of the wings on “Lauren’s Dragon” is green interference mixed with varnish before being applied. (Probably varnished over again just for extra protection.)
                    2. Same dragon, different place: the whitish edges of his neck scales are blue intereference mixed with varnish. I used a LOT of interference and a small amount of varnish; in person, you can see the almost white appearance of the powder as it looks in the bottle!
                    3. Same dragon, completely different result: along the top of each crest scale is a streak of Micropearl mixed with varnish; very faint, just enough to create a subtle difference, and probably doesn’t even show up in the gallery photos.

You asked for “happily married” replies, but I’m kind of the other side.

I’m 27 (ack!), and I realized back when I was in college (uh, the first time) that I probably don’t want to get married, ever. Whenever I pictured my future, I was picturing *my* future, not mine-and-someone’s future. I discovered that I love living alone — I can stay up late without worrying that my noise or lights are disturbing anyone, I can take showers at 3 AM, I can eat anything without worrying it’s an ingredient for tomorrow’s dinner.

Do I wish, when coming home at 9:30 p.m., that someone would have already cooked me dinner and have it waiting? Sure. Do I wish sometimes that someone was there to fetch me ice packs when my shoulders or back ache? Absolutely. But overall, I’ll take having *my* *own* space over having someone “looking after” me, and I notice that I’m not particularly inclined toward looking after other people: I have very little patience for sick or upset people. 🙂 I also worry a bit about getting old; what if I can’t drive myself to doctor appointments, or I get lonely? But the same things happen to married people; there’s no guarantee that my husband would be in better mind or health than I am, and as for company, well, men tend to die earlier than women!

I am, in short, “happily single,” though I dislike the word ‘single’ — it always seems to imply ‘and looking,’ which I’m not. All around me, my friends are pairing off; I feel very strange, sometimes, being solitary in the midst of all this couple-ness, but I really can’t picture myself joining the crowd. Trying to picture me with someone else as a permanent part of my life brings up in my mind words like, “underfoot,” and “negotiate” and “stuck” — I couldn’t do many of the things I want to do, like travel or have friends visit or let fandomers have crash space during conventions or (probably) have ten dogs and five snakes…

In fact, I recently posted a “strictly platonic” ad on Craigslist trying to find some geeky friends to hang out with. Friends fulfill, for me the role that most people look to a partner for; they are my human interaction and my emotional ties. It’s a bit hard not to feel betrayed or “demoted” when they marry, but on the other hand I have more of them; plus, surely at least a couple will remain single, too? And they’ll always have someone to go to when they’re having relationship problems, someone who will give them tea and cookies and say ‘there, there’ while nodding patiently as they exhort her to never fall in love. 🙂 (For some reason they always say this! Hello, you are my friends and I love you dearly, but have you somehow *not noticed* the irony?)

I am, however, thinking of buying a cheap ring for my left hand and manufacturing an out-of-state fiance for the purpose of avoiding skeevy guys; because apparently “single” = “available,” and I really, really hate how “are you single” is code for “can I begin hitting on you?” An imaginary man in another state seems like the perfect “relationship” for me! 🙂 Though I always tell people that my only long-term relationship is my computer. (It’s funny because it’s true!) 🙂

I went and got hooked on dragcave.net a few months ago… and I know I’ve seen other posters here with little familiar eggs in their signature lines!

So, who are you? What’s your scroll like? (Does it have a theme? Does it have similarities with your Windstone collection?) Do you name your dragons, and if so, what kind of names do you use? Is there any dragon you want “THE MOST”?

Me: My “collection” started out all female, though I’ve slightly modified this to become “all female, except where the sexes differ — in which case I will have one of each.” I do name all my dragons; I use fantasy names (Rylliana, Taunoa, Jiyo, etc.), and each “species” of dragon has names starting with a different letter of the alphabet. I’m hoping I won’t run out of letters by the time I get all the ones I want!

Speaking of ones I want, does anyone want to give me a male Silver hatchling? I don’t really have much worth trading, but my Two-headed dragons have produced an egg before, so I could breed them for you. Or I have a (white) Striped egg that I don’t need, since my first one gendered correctly.

I have a Silver female, but she hates me and is uninterested in every male I try her with. (Clearly, she takes after me too much!) Thus I am forced to rely upon the kindness of strangers… and I know the WE forums has the best and kindest of strangers. 🙂 (I also yearn for a Gold…)

(Edit: I could also breed you a colored stripe, now that my White one has grown! He’s already produced *two* blue eggs for me, so clearly he’s not going to be insanely picky like my Silver! )

I kind of want to start a new scroll so I can name a bunch of dragons with Discworld-style names, e.g. “Lord Mountjoy Talonthrust III of Ankh” — too bad having multiple scrolls is against the rules. Oh, well! Maybe I can talk a friend into doing it for me… or just wait till I have the whole alphabet used up and they come out with more new dragons. 🙂

As some of you know, I am moving and most of my Windstones are going into storage while I attempt to find a job. However, I can’t bear the idea of my beautiful raffle dragon being boxed up to sit in a shed, and while I’ve loved having her very much I think someone else deserves a chance to appreciate her.

You can see pictures of her here: http://www.windstoneeditions.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9719&hilit=champagne&start=45

For the sake of full disclosure, I will note that she is not perfect — her left horn is loose (if you wiggle it, it wiggles!), there’s a bit of what looks like damage around the base of it (a tiny area that’s flat/gray, like the pink has chipped off), and a spot on her right horn where the pewter shows through. These are *tiny* imperfections, but I’m a Breyer collector and I notice these things and assume others might, too. 🙂 I don’t want anyone to be disappointed!

She will be shipped in her own box; it does not have inserts, but I will be using a LOT of bubble wrap and an outer box, too, so she should be safe.

                                6. I will email the winner (and edit this post) and give them the good news and the shipping cost. They will have five days to pay (or at least to get it in the mail, if money orders/etc. are used); if they can’t, I will draw another name.
                                7. Set her in a nice visible place and enjoy! 🙂

Is there any chance of another PYO batch coming up soon? (Small, not Keeper.)

Yesterday I was about to order a griffin from the store, but since I need a PYO (I really do — I promised someone one for *Christmas*, and had to renege because the move meant they were out of stock, so now I’m 6 months overdue on their present!) I figured I could order them both together if a batch was going to be up soon. I just need *one*, so it wouldn’t even have to be a large batch…! 🙂

                                  Thanks!
