How convenient: I work in an animal shelter! 🙂 (http://www.pawsct.org, if you want to browse for names or pictures!) Several of the cats I’m fondest of are Cinnamon and Ginger (calico sisters, mostly white and very slender), Rudy and Rupert (B&W kittens), Swizzle (grey), Augusta (brown tabby), Sandy (orange tabby), Ember (longhaired torti), Sailor (tabby+white)…
How about a “random name generator”? Go to Petfinder.com, put in your zip code and a 50-mile radius, hit “search” and take the first name… or the name of the first cat listed with the same color? ::laughs:: I love going to Petfinder, even though I can’t have a pet yet. It’s like a reminder that one day I will!

Hey, Melody, I have a pair of questions!
First — I thought there was an old blog post or forum thread about the barn owls, specifically the one that was (made for/inspired by/promoted with/??) the Labyrinth movie, but I can’t find it; do you know where it was or could you tell me about it again? Thank you!
Second: I loved the “Grackle” color! Any chance of an OW in that color? 🙂 Preferably as something pseudo-affordable, like an LP run, rather than a single/few on Ebay, but… I love it! If you wanted to experiment, I think it would be really pretty if the colors were reversed, too — black where the green is, and vice-versa. 🙂 Or with some of the more muted tones of the Serpentine color (I loved the greens in that, but not the orangey areas) mixed with the brighter greens…
Hey, if you did a “Grackle” with white instead of black, it’d make a ROCKIN’ Christmas dragon for next year! Call it Snowy Pines or something. 🙂

August 30, 2010 at 7:47 pm in reply to: All about Secret Keepers and A White SK on "the bay" #825375Hey, Melody, thanks for the update/info! I’m secretly kind of glad to hear they’re not in the immediate future (but I’m bummed that I can’t afford that one on Ebay!) — I have no job right now and can’t afford so much as a Fledgling, much less an SK, so I’d just have to miss out if they were imminent!
I desperately want a White SK, though, to complete (well, almost — also need that White RSpectral!) my White collection! So I’m keeping my fingers crossed that eventually I’ll be able to get one… 🙂

“Creatures from El” is the studio name of a sculptor who makes amazingly detailed fantasy beasts, often with a peculiar twisty, tendrily, Dali sort of style to them; some are steampunkish/clockwork-type things. I’m completely in love with all of them! Check out http://www.creaturesfromel.ca, or her blog: http://creaturesfromel.livejournal.com/.
Windstone Editions, on the other hand, as we all know, is the studio name for Creatures From Mel! 🙂

I feel you! It took me MONTHS to do a single PYO small dragon; and by months I do not mean “two or three,” I mean “six to ten.” ::wipes forehead:: I enjoyed it, but it’s a good thing the recipients didn’t know it was coming, because I’m sure the anticipation would have killed them!

Wow, this is a post I never thought I’d see; hope everything’s relatively all right with you!
I must admit, I’m *deeply* interested in your Rising Spectral, but in all honesty probably can’t afford it unless you were willing to do time payments, which really isn’t conducive to the “get the negative taint out of the house” idea. Unless I hocked a kidney… hey, Forums, anyone need a right kidney? Great shape, only been in service for a quarter-century…
Perhaps more do-ably, I’m also very interested in the Hatching Emp — last of the White royals I need!
Keep us posted, not just about the dragons but also about you, if you’re willing!

How long have you been collecting?
I bought my first piece when I was in high school, so… late/end of the 1990s? It was a White Mother; I hadn’t seen the White color in person until then, but the instant I set eyes on it I knew I had to have it! I saved up the $80ish it cost and bought it, and then bought the Young a few months later. How many do you have?
Every time I try to count them up, I realize I’m forgetting one! So, uh, let’s see… as far as I can figure, 29 total: 9 Whites, 5 Laps, 3 Old Warriors, 2 Unicorns, 3 Gryphons, 1 Frog, 3 Orientals, and 4 PYOs (none of them completed). What is your favorite piece in your collection?
Prototype BVP Old Warrior?Anything really special you want but do not have yet?
Oooooh, yeah! My “Grail” is the White Rising Spectral; and I’m also longing to get my hands on some of those Test Paint gryphons, esp. the Labradorites. And I’m really hoping for an Ocean Blue production run!Interested in buying or trading for: GB Pebble Sitting Red Fox in dark grey, Lap Dragon Test Paints (Water Sprite, Glacial Pearl, Opulence, Pastel Rainbow, and many others - see my Classifieds ad), Blue Morpho OW, GB Pebble Loaf dragons in blue/aqua/teal, and Griffin Test Paints (Black Rainbow or Frosted Jade).
Well, since her current owner hasn’t coughed up a photo, here’s the “Champagne” Lap from the Dec. 08 raffle whom I was honored to live with for a while:

The photo doesn’t have enough detail for me to be completely certain (or maybe that’s my eyes), but unless someone had the sheer gall to paint over the beautiful glass eyes of a real Male Dragon (possible, because he mentions that it’s heavy and ‘feels like ceramic’), I’d say it was a fake with cast-in eyes. The paint on the eyes is pretty streaky, surely I’d see some reflection from the glass underneath if it was really a repaint?

MMmmm, chocolate!
I love Lindt, Cadbury (hate hate hate that they’re being bought out by stupid American company!), Milka, and Ritter makes a couple that I really like (the Cappuchino, and the Dark w/ Marzipan!) as well. I just discovered NewTree a couple weeks ago; the Milk Choc. w/ Apricot is to DIE FOR! Newman’s Own makes a great mocha/milk choc. bar, too. Oh, and I also love the Endangered Species chocolate — their milk w/ almonds and dark w/ espresso are particularly good.
Living down the street from an international grocery store really spoiled me as regards chocolate; after three years of imported Swiss and Belgian and German stuff, I can’t eat a Hershey’s bar — all I taste is wax. 🙂

Which brand/brands do you think taste the best? We can discuss everything from everyday comfort foods, to high-end and more obscure products. I would love to hear your opinions. I’ve always enjoyed Godiva, but since they’re kind of commercial in some respects, I was wondering if anyone here might know of some gourmet, all-natural brands that are just as good or even better. Let me know what you think.

RiDuvessa wrote:Does anyone here read the Southern Vampire series? I am looking for some new Urban Fantasy while I am waiting for some of my regular authors to come out. Haven’t ever read Sookie Stackhouse, the descriptions seemed a little too romance novel for me. Still the author has a new boxed set out and I am thinking of picking it up. Anyone have any opinions?
I’ve read all but the last two Sookie books, because they were free… and they are *definitely* romance, with a thin veneer of fantasy. As the series went (dragged) on, it became more and more about Sookie’s choice of studly men — should she choose the jerk-vampire Eric, who was so sweet when he had amnesia? or the first-love vampire Bill, who brought her into the world of the supernatural? or the hunky werewolf, in spite of his crazy ex-girlfriend issues? Or the exotic were-tiger, who, uh, will probably be cancelled out in some way in the next book I didn’t read, since it has a tiger on the cover.
Personally, like I said, I only read ’em because they were free; I couldn’t identify with blonde, blue-eyed, leggy, small-town-Southern Sookie at all, not least because she didn’t appear to have a brain in her head; and the continual wardrobe descriptions got to be awfully boring to me as a non-shopoholic. Not to mention I hated most of her male options, especially Bill, whose Crazy Possessive Stalker had me screaming at her to ditch him before they even became an item in the first place, never mind after {spoiler}.

Since you liked Ender’s Game, definitely check out Young Miles by Lois McMaster Bujold! (Also check out Cordelia’s Honor by same!) In a slightly different vein, you might also like On Basilisk Station by David Weber — much heavier on the military/tactical themes, and lacking the child-soldier angle, but also essentially about a clever commander waging space warfare.
I haven’t read the other two you mentioned, so I can’t base recommendations on that, but I’m a big fan of alien psychology in my sci-fi and character-driven writing, so if you like that sort of thing… things I’ve been reading lately include Foreigner by C.J. Cherryh (well, I’m about 9 books into the series now, but that’s the first one!), which is all about humans trying to coexist with an alien race whose planet they’ve crash-landed on; atevi biology is deceptively like and also unlike humans, such that contact is limited to a single interpreter. By the same author and involving similar themes, though a bit more lighthearted, there’s The Pride of Chanur. (Leonine aliens encounter a stray human who’s at the center of interspecies political maneuvering; first contact from an alien perspective.)
Someone above mentioned Ursula LeGuin; I’ve only read her The Left Hand of Darkness, but I liked it very much — picture a fascinating society where people are genderless for most of their lives… and now drop a (“normal”) human into it.
My brain is fogging over now because it’s midnight, so I’ll save fantasy recommendations for some other time. 🙂
EtruscusShadow wrote:Hey everyone! I was just wondering if anyone had any good science fiction novels they wanted to share. I’m a big fan of Orson Scott Card but aside from him I haven’t found any really good ones.
The ones I have read include Robota, Ender’s Game, and Leviathan.
I’ve also read The Termeraire Series and I am currently reading Irene Radford’s The Dragon Nimbus Chronicles, along with numerous Dinosaur text books. So if anyone has any recommendations, I would love to hear some. :3
Oh and I have also read a ton of Neil Gaiman.

Count me in among the grateful voices, even though they were out of stock before I found out about them! 🙂 I’m totally in love with them — my three favorite colors, all in one WE piece! (Well, okay, if the purple one were aqua it would be *even better*, but who’s quibbling? Not me!)
I was so thrilled to read that they’re going to go into production!

My birthday is coming up in… wow, two days! So I’d like to buy myself a present. 🙂 Pieces I’m particularly interested in are as follows, in approximate order of MUSTHAVENOWPLEEZ:
White Rising Spectral
White Hatching Emperor
PYO Keeper (unpainted)Emerald Lap Dragon
Copper Patina Lap Dragon
Damaged/Faded/etc. Red Fire Lap DragonFemale Kirin
Baby KirinThis is probably wishful thinking, since I’m currently serving an unpaid internship and money is tight (to put it mildly), but I am willing to compromise on quality/condition in order to obtain affordable pieces; and hey, maybe some of you awesome people here will take pity on a fellow forum member because it’s her birthday. ::Grins::
Thanks!

You have NO idea how relieved I am to hear that it’s going to be production! I LOVE this piece in color, and now I’m so glad I waited rather than buy the stone-finish one a while ago…
