The medical field is lazy about abbreviations. They tend to abbreviate many things by taking the first letter of the actual word and using “x” as the wildcard. Off the top of my head I can think of: Dx for diagnosis, Hx for history, Fx for fracture, and Rx for prescription (using the Latin recipere, or recipe). But this is one that they could at least vary a little more. Tx is also used for treatment, therapy, transfusion, and traction. 😕

At least in the US… I wonder how it is elsewhere.

I’ve had an account for 8yrs come December (one of my first Maebnus accounts)… but I haven’t updated in 58 weeks . And my last couple posts were rather far apart too.

I have spurts of interest in keeping a journal, but whenever I stop feeling like it, it takes me a long time to get back into the habit. I suppose it’s because I really don’t have much to say that’s interesting. And so continues my boring life….

Hehe, no prob. It’s always nice knowing something before a co-worker. 🙂

Personally, I just thought it was interesting to know the history behind it. I can’t say I ever thought about the inclusion of professionals, since I don’t recall watching any Olympic events prior to ’92. Meanwhile, my husband probably hasn’t watching any since then. 😆

It’s not clear to me why the professioanal basketball players are in the Olympics when I thought this was supposed to be for amateurs. Did I miss some change in the rules?

Yeah, from like 20 years ago! 😀 Professional athletes were first allowed to compete in 1988, though it was only for selected sports, and the rest followed in 1992. My husband complained about this the other night, so I had to look it up for him. 🙂

According to John Lucas, a former Olympic athlete, author of 5 books on Olympic history, and the official lecturer of the Olympics Committee (as of 1996 anyway, when this was said): “Prior to 1952, there was only one kind of athlete allowed in the Olympic Games– Winter and Summer. Then the Soviet Union and its 14 Communist allies entered the games. All their athletes were fully supported by their governments. None ever held a job. They trained 8 hours a day, 365 days a year. They won most of the gold, silver and bronze during the 1970s and 1980s. None of these athletes were amateur, and yet they were allowed to compete in the Olympics (which made athletes sign pledges that they were amateurs) because the communist athletes were not definable, they were not “pros” like Michael Jordan. It was unfair. So in 1986, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) changed its rule book (Olympic Charter) to allow “all the world’s great male and female athletes to participate.”

Thanks, Necron. I don’t have any of those channels, so it’s all being broadcast on the lovely () Armed Forces Network channels. Their website has been less than accurate when I’ve checked it, so I’ll use The Courier’s to see what should be on if anything’s playing. 😀 I’m curious to compare and see if they’re actually showing it all to us. At least it looks like we’re still getting it Live, though their timing at replacing normal commercials with AFN propaganda sure is impressive sometimes.

Hey, it looks like there’s some ping pong action sometime in the next few hours… woo!

                      I missed the opening ceremony 😥 .

I watch what I can, when I can. Though I’m not really interested in basketball/soccer/handball/waterpolo/fieldhockey (they’re all too similar to me), and they seem to show the entire game when those are on :?. Tennis, I love, but I’m okay with not getting to see much of it (since Wimbledon wasn’t that long ago). I enjoy watching events that don’t ever seem to be on tv… archery, beach volleyball, weight-lifting (Mmm.. a couple of those Chinese guys are cute), equestrian stuff (I don’t know jack about it, but the horses are pretty). A local Japanese channel had on Judo Sunday night… but since I don’t understand the scoring, it wasn’t really interesting (I don’t care about not understanding the announcers unless I need to be told what the heck is going on!). I seem to be missing all the gymnastics though, which is disappointing. I like watching the women’s stuff.

I just wish I knew what was on and when. I want to see some super-speed table tennis!

Oh, and I’m loving the dresses that the Chinese women are wearing during ceremony stuff. I don’t normally catch those, but I’ve seen 3 dresses so far and they’re gorgeous! (poofy red one from the Opening, and two styles of white ones during a medal award)

There are various ways of de-barking a dog, few are permanent. Puppymills are well known for taking pipes and shoving them down their dogs throats to scar the vocal cords up. I find it odd that many people who find de-barking wrong have no issues with de-clawing a cat, neither of which do I agree with, BUT if it between that or the animal being abandoned I would pick the operation, JMHO. I have no issues with docking or cropping either as long as they are performed by a vet.

You’ve got a good point there. I guess I’m one of those people, and my initial reaction is rather hypocritical. I suppose part of the discrepancy is because of what I’m used to. I never knew de-barking was something really done, so cutting vocal chords just seems… wrong. I’m quite accustomed to de-clawing cats, docking tails, and cropping ears. Objectively, I’d say they’re wrong (altering an animal for your convenience/aesthetic preference), but it’s always seemed “normal” to me. I suppose cutting chords would be on the same level.

Some friends of my grandmothers, after their border collie died, got a new one from a breeder. This dog, Rory, was supposed to be a show dog, but was too shy in the ring. They get him home, and he’s very quiet, but they didn’t realize how quiet until someone rang the doorbell. Rory was trying his darndest to bark, but nothing came out. The evil people (dare I call them people) had cut the dogs vocal cords! 👿

😯 That’s horrible! Poor Rory. I like quiet dogs, but the idea of doing that instead of training the dog not to bark is just disgusting. 😡

Good question! I have several favorites as well, but I most often find myself drawn towards hematite.
