I love poads myself but have had some listed for a while that no one will even trade for or buy so if people wanted poads I think they would be selling faster. The adult poads aren’t even selling for what people paid for them. Secondary market prices reflect demand so I think prices are a good indication of how popular an item is and if it will sell or not!
Not true with one of a kind pieces. In almost every batch, I see pieces that are highly popular and pieces that are not popular at all. I had a Colt up for sale/trade for almost a year from the day that I got it with no bites on it at all while other people’s colts were selling and trading like hotcakes. When it comes to one of a kind pieces, you simply cannot gauge the popularity of something by looking at a few pieces that you personally have for sale. It may just mean the pattern on them is not something others want.
You’re so right, Hannah. Secondary market is not a good indication of the direction a company should take with production. There are always a few odd pieces from every grab bag batch that either get snapped up as soon as they’re up for sale / trade or alternatively get left lingering on the shelf so to speak. I still have a tadpoad from two batches ago that I just couldn’t find a home for so I’ll probably give it to someone for Christmas.
I don’t know very much about the “after market”!
What patterns and colors seem to be most popular? Which colors are unpopular?
Taste in patterns and colors seems to vary so widely!
If there is a pattern, color or theme that is consistently a wall flower, let me know and I will avoid painting more!Melody, it seems as predictable as which way the wind’s blowing.
Pretty much everything has been popular at one time or another. Candy corns were busy and colourful. Then our eyes (and yours, I’m sure) needed a rest and we went for safaris and naturals.
Plain and fancy Tanukis as well as natural and fantasy taddies seem equally popular.
So, who knows?
Life is beautiful.
November 11, 2015 at 2:50 am #936932I hate to see a pattern/color etc. be completely nixed because a few don’t like them, I’m not a fan of tobiano pattern on the unis but I’m sure there are others who enjoy that pattern, I just find it a bit boring especially if there are no dapples are not on an interesting color! I also don’t like the candy color puke look and will likely never buy one, but again, many love these! I love natural colors, but there are those who don’t like them at all.
I’m a HUGE fan of that purple/lavender/grey color you’ve used on a couple pieces(Like the Arctic on the Arctic GB store pic) but I don’t see a lot of other people drooling over that color like me lol.
Plus, I say Melody/Windstone should paint what they think will sell and not worry so much about the ‘after market’.

Not currently open for PYO commissions.November 11, 2015 at 3:11 am #936933What I paint next will depend on what we have a good supply of.
Looking at the carts of stuff we have, I see we don’t have many baby unicorns right now. We do have LOTS and LOTS of poads, maybe enough young unicorns for a batch of 100 or so… lots of pebble things of various species, and a whole cart crammed full of … hmm, maybe these will work… haven’t done a grab bag edition of these things yet…Talk about a cliffhanger…. :p
Right? lol.. Sounds like whatever they are, they perked Mel’s interest 🙂

I’m gonna try a few of these, but they may be too complicated to do a gb batch of. Gb things need to be things that I can paint fairly easily, accommodate lots of different paint schemes, and don’t give me fits of despair.

Don’t blame you! But at the worst, you end up with some Ebay pieces and the knowledge that it doesn’t work for GB’s, lol 🙂 I’m always happy to see what you come up with, even if it isn’t something I can afford or something I collect

Sometimes stuff also isn’t selling, not because it isn’t liked, but because the people or person that does like it either doesn’t have the money at the moment, doesn’t find that particular price appealing, or if the item is for trade, doesn’t have a piece the seller/trader is wanting. And then there are also the people who might not be looking at the classified ads, and in the case of Ebay, might not have an account. *shrugs*
I know I look at the trade ads a lot, see items I really like, but can’t trade for because I don’t have a piece the person wants (or don’t have a piece I am willing to part with myself XD). Sometimes I have just spent money and have to wait a bit before I can buy something I see in a sale ad. Also, in my case, I tend to get distracted… I see a piece I want to contact the seller about, and end up forgetting because something pops up in the store, or something not Windstone related takes my money. And as much as I love Windstones, whether straight from the store, or on the secondary market, they are non-essential items… and the essential things come first. If I have a bill to pay, that comes first.
And on Melody’s question:
I personally don’t think colors, schemes, and patterns should be avoided just because a few people don’t care for them, as no ones tastes are the same, and what one person doesn’t want, someone else out there will be more than thrilled to have. Even if it doesn’t appear so on the secondary market later. The right people just aren’t there at the right time.November 12, 2015 at 12:25 am #936965I don’t think there are any particular colours or patterns I can think of that haven’t sold well except maybe ones that are more simplistic in a batch of mostly intricate ones. I have seen some I like myself on eBay that I haven’t had the money for that have been on there a while so maybe it’s the pricing or timing or just general popularity of the colour combibations.
I tend to like rainbow colours, pastels or anything in complimentary colours. I am not really into red, orange or brown colours much but then again some people like those colours so we all have different tastes. I mentioned secondary market prices only as a reference to what I have observed is popular and the baby unicorns are definitely popular based on how many people have repeatedly requested them and the prices that have stayed high on them.
That is not to say the poads and pebbles aren’t also popular but I just feel there has been a bit of over saturation with so many pebbles and tadpoads lately. If more young poads came out in the future I may try for one if I can narrow down what I already have. In the meantime I would love to see something different and hopefully more baby unicorns when they are available.

Poop. I don’t think this piece will work as a gb after all. I just spent a frustrating afternoon working on these, only painted 4 of them, and they don’t even look that great. This piece is surprisingly difficult to paint.

Thpppah, that’s rough. But look on the bright side – Your “not that great” is many times nicer than the best paint job I’ve ever done! Whatever you come up with, I’m sure we’ll love it!
